Rules Q&A
- Q: [2]. A Wish Granted + Honor Requirement
When I have to met the Honor Requirement of a Personality, only in the Dinasty Phase? A Wish Granted take care of this?
A: "Personalities' Honor Requirements need only be met during the Dynasty Phase. [JA, 27 September 2001]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Honor Requirements" Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 December 2004", 13 Dec 2004 - Q: Assuming all other circumstances are correct, can you use as a reaction Purification to fill a province, and then at you second chance for a reaction use a Wish Granted on the Purified Personality?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 2-3 March 2004", 4 Mar 2004 - Q: There's a couple of conflicting rulings on hand regarding whether Honor requirements need to be met at all times. I remember from the discussions of A Wish Granted this ruling being referenced:
Personalities' Honor Requirements need only be met during the Dynasty Phase. [JA, 27 September 2001]
However, I went to make sure I was remembering correctly and found this under Kolat Recruiter:
You are bound by all restrictions and requirements of the Personality, including minimum honor. [DW, email, 18 March 1999]
Does the first ruling, being more recent, override the one on Kolat Recruiter? I'm honestly not sure because I don't know if Honor Requirements count as play restrictions anymore.
A: Honor Requirements are a play restriction. [Glossary p. 103]
Also, the MRP of Kolat Recruiter says "In all cases, play restrictions must still be met." [card text] That plus the Glossary make things pretty clear. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 Feb. 2004", 27 Feb 2004 - Q: About "a Wish Granted" I need a clarification on "by a battle". Does it refer to a battle action, the battle resolution segment or both ?
A: Resolution. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 November 2003, Part 2", 28 Nov 2003 - Q: Can you play A Wish Granted to pop out a personality who's honor requirement is more than your current family honor?
A: Yes. See Rules Archive, General Rules, Honor requriements, http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/#HonorReq Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 November 2003", 2 Nov 2003 - Q: Then what happens if I use Kisada's Shrine to bring the guy back in and what happens if I play A Wish Granted during battle, would the sword go from 0 to +8 or 0 to +1?
A: Any new Personalities brought into play would add +1 to the Personality targeted by Daigotsu, just like normal (except you're starting from a lower Force value). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30 September 2003, Part 2", 1 Oct 2003 - Q: Can I bring into play a personality with higher honor requirement than my current family honor with A Wish Granted ?
A: Yes. Rules Archive, General Rules, Honor Requirements: "Personalities' Honor Requirements need only be met during the Dynasty Phase." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 25 August 2003", 25 Aug 2003 - Q: A Wish Granted: Do you need to meet the honor requirement of the personality coming into play?
A: No. Personality Honor Requirements only need to be met during the Dynasty Phase. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 May 2003", 8 May 2003 - Q: I have trouble regarding timing.
I have a Wish Granted in hand. My opponent attack me on a province with a face up personnality. I Defend with one personality. I lost the battle, his total army force during résolution is more than my Province Strengh + my total defending army force.
Can I react to the death of my personality during resolution with my A Wish Granted to bring my face up personality in play before the province is destroyed?
A: No. When the Attacker wins a battle by that much, the defending army and the Province are destroyed at the same time. [GE p. 57] A Wish Granted is played "after" your Personality dies [card text], which is also after the Province is gone. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 January 2003", 21 Jan 2003 - Q: Does "A Wish Granted" let you ignore the honor requirement of the card you're bringing into play, too?
A: No, but it doesn't need to. See Archive, general rules, Honor Requirements. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 November 2002", 30 Nov 2002 - Q: Hi Jeff, I've been reviewing some rulings from last week and I've got a question on your ruling on A Wish Granted. You stated that you must meet the honour requirement of the personality that you are bringing into play. Is this a card-specific ruling or are you reversing the ruling stating that "Personalities' Honor Requirements need only be met during the Dynasty Phase" which is currently listed in the rules archives?
A: You know, I looked for that ruling, which I thought I recalled, and I didn't find it. My mistake. You're right, you do NOT need to meet the Personality's Honor Requirement. This is a REVERSAL. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 October 2002", 12 Oct 2002 - Q: 3) A Wish Granted I seem to recall seeing this asked, but I don't remember seeing the answer. Do you need to meet the honor requirement of the person you bring into play, and do you gain the honor for their PH in play, or do you follow normal honor-gaining rules for bringing people into play?
You are bound by all play restrictions. You do not gain Honor unless you pay full price for someone during your Dynasty Phase.
Text of A Wish Granted: "Reaction: Play after one of your Human Personalities is destroyed by a battle, or another player's card effect to bring a face-up Human Personality in one of your Provinces into play without Gold cost. If the Personality has your Faction trait, gain that Personality's Personal Honor. "
The question is valid, but it's already been answered. Either Jeff or Zen said that you get the extra point from KRS, Yojiro, or similar effects. I don't remember the exact post, but I remember reading this.
A: Oops, yeah. I'd overlooked the last sentence of A Wish Granted. Sorry for the confusion.
There is an honor gain, but it's not because you're bringing a Personality into play from a Province. It's because of explicit card text. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 Oct 2002", 9 Oct 2002 - Q: 3) A Wish Granted I seem to recall seeing this asked, but I don't remember seeing the answer. Do you need to meet the honor requirement of the person you bring into play, and do you gain the honor for their PH in play, or do you follow normal honor-gaining rules for bringing people into play?
A: You are bound by all play restrictions. You do not gain Honor unless you pay full price for someone during your Dynasty Phase. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 Oct 2002", 7 Oct 2002 - Q: Is a personality still being "played" when they're brought in through card effect (Fires in the Hidden City, I Give You My Name, A Wish Granted, etc)? Or do they enter play through some other means? What about if they're coming back from a Suitengu's Surge?
A: For Personalities, played is pretty much synonymous with entering play. Zen Faulkes, ""Playing" personalities", 21 Mar 2005
