Rules Q&A
- Q: My opponent is attacking me with Hida Kaiji. I have the Imperial Favor. My opponent uses an action to discard Blessings of the Shi Tien Yen Wang to give Kaiji a force bonus, and to negate the next card effect that bows, destroys, or moves him. I attempt to use the Imperial Favor to send him home. Kaiji has the trait, "Before the first time each turn another player's action moves Kaiji: Negate his movement from that action." What happens? Obviously, Kaiji doesn't move, but, assuming this is my first attempt to move him, which of his negation effects are used up? I can see several different resolutions to the scenario, and all seem fairly plausible.
Scenario 1) The Imperial Favor is not a card, and therefore would not ever trigger Blessings of the Shi Tien Yen Wang's negation. Kaiji's trait negates his movement, and the Blessing's negation remains intact. If this is the case, what if he were being moved by, say, Yoritomo Kanahashi's ability to send someone home?
Scenario 2) Both negations activate at once, and neither is intact once the action is over.
Scenario 3) Both negations attempt to resolve simultaneously, and the active player chooses the order in which they would resolve. If this is the case, would the effect chosen second remain intact? Or would both be used up regardless, since neither is an optional effect?
Scenario 4) The effects trigger at different times, and only one would even check against the movement, leaving the other intact?
Please help.
A: The correct answer is A, as the Imperial Favor is not a card effect, and therefore does not trigger Blessings of Shi-Tien Yen-Wang.
In most other similar situations, however, the correct answer is C, the active player would choose, since both come at point A in the timing sequence.
In general, whenever two effects like this would both negate the same thing, the trigger of going home is now gone, the second effect would not be "used up" and would remain active. Jon Palmer, "Double negation", 8 Jan 2013
