Rules Q&A
- Q: re: viewtopic.php?p=1345354#p1345354
If I "show a card from my hand", am I choosing what card I show? If so, and I show Hato-Gurama, is my opponent forced to take it since I am unable to discard it from my action's effects? http://rules.l5r.com/EE_Effects#Choices "If the legality of an action depends on its effects, choices within the action must be made in such a way as to make the action legal."
A: Again, the key word here is the person who is making the choice to discard; your opponent, not you. No matter what the opponent picks, YOU never chose to discard it. Jon Palmer, "re: Hato-gurama", 13 Mar 2013 - Q: If I have a Hato-Gurama in my hand and an effect like Ikoma Satoru's is available, is the Hato Gurama a viable choice for offering as a gift? I think "no", because the duck's trait says that I can't choose to discard it as a cost or effect of *my* own actions if I have other options in my hand, and if my opponent declined the duck I'd have to discard it. Alternatively, the answer is "yes" but when I would have to discard it nothing happens instead (I keep the duck).
Thanks!

A: In this case your opponent is the one making the choice to discard it, so Duck him all you want. Jon Palmer, "Hato-gurama and "Gifting"", 13 Mar 2013 - Q: Hi there,
I PM'ed Macbeth as the rules for this forum say too on the 3rd of December but still haven't had an update, even just to say that it is under discussion. My question (Discarding Hato-Gurama query) was posted on Sun Nov 25 and just wanting to see if anyone has come to a decision regarding this yet?
Thank you for your time, Rucket.
A: Yes, for the reason you cited.
If there is a third, non-duck card in your hand you must choose that one, but the traits on the ducks cancel each other otherwise. Jon Palmer, "Request for update to Ducks query", 17 Dec 2012 - Q: So I control a Doji Nagori XP and announce his Limited ability. But I have a Hato-Gurama in my hand:
I'm not choosing to discard Hato-Gurama, I just target it and show it to my opponent, it's my opponent who chooses whether to discard it or not. If he chooses not to put it in his hand, do I have to discard it? Do I get to draw 2 cards?
A: You didn't choose to discard it, your opponent did. Discard it. Draw 2. Jon Palmer, "Hato-Gurama and Doji Nagori XP", 18 Nov 2012 - Q: Hato-Gurama and Jurojin's Blessing (cont.)

I was under the impression that with Jurojin's Blessing Limited: Look at the top card of your Fate deck. You may discard it.
that the card you peak at is replaced face down is replaced before the option to discard it meaning that game state would forget what the actual card is which would mean you in theory "don't know what it is" cancelling the trait. Or is this coming under the good faith rule in which case "will not be discarded" trumps "you may discard"?
Am I just incredibly wrong about how game state works in general?
A: You may not look at or show the top card of your deck and then discard it a part of the same action or trait. However, if you look at or show it as an effect of one action, game state "forgets" what the card is if a later action causes you to discard the top card of your deck.
See the Tracking Rule: “Memory” of the status of individual cards ends when the card enters a deck or a hand, or otherwise becomes both face-down and out of play (such as after a card in the deck or hand is shown). This includes dishonorable status, ongoing effects, the state of the card earlier in the game (such as having assigned), and whether or not an ability has been used.
EXCEPTION 1: A card's role in a series of consecutively applied costs and effects from a single action or trait is not "forgotten" from one effect to the other -- for example, if you are asked to draw a card and then show it, you must show the same card. If a card being tracked in this way is in a deck that is then shuffled, the tracked card is set aside during the shuffling; if it then needs to return to the deck, it is shuffled in again.
