Rules Q&A
- Q: e.g.
I think this means that Final Sacrifice can only target a unit at the current battle. So if Isawa X and Shiba Y are at home, and Shiba Z is defending, and the attacker plays Determined Challenge on Isawa X, Final Sacrifice can only target Shiba Z (a legal, if useless target for Determined Challenge) but could not target Shiba Y to cause him to be moved into the battle. Correct?
And therefore,
While nothing stops you playing Final Sacrifice in response to Coward, it will never do anything, since Coward can only target units at home and Final Sacrifice can only target units at the current battlefield. Correct?
A: The Yojimbo is targeted by Final Sacrifice, so - if played during a battle - he must be at the current battlefield. This means he is not a legal target for actions which only target cards in your home, so the redirection will fail.
However, if the action being Interrupted targets a card "at any location", then the Yojimbo is a valid target, and the redirection will work. Alex Jones, "Final Sacrifice vs targets 'at any location'", 19 May 2015 - Q: Situation. Lion player attacking, Unicorn player defending Unicorn player has Shinjo X with Ancestral Armor of the Unicorn Clan attached (bowed) Lion player brings Shinjo X into the battle with Determined Challenge. Ancestral Armor of the Unicorn Clan still bowed Unicorn players moves home with random ability. Ancestral Armor of the Unicorn Clan still bowed
Question: If Lion player brings Shinjo X into the battle with Roaming Caravan, can the Unicorn player stop the movement with the Armor? 1. No. Roaming Caravan is "Straighten his unit and move him there". Straighten and move happen simultaneously. Armor is still bowed at Interrupt window. 2. Yes. Straighten happens before interrupt window. Can use Armor to stop the movement
Many thanks!
Roaming Caravan Battle, Bow : Target another player's Personality at any location who was moved home from the current battlefield. Straighten his unit and move him there.
Ancestral Armor of the Unicorn Clan Interrupt, Bow : The action cannot move Personalities.
A: All Interrupts are declared before the action's effects take place, so since the Armor was bowed at that point, its Interrupt may not be declared even though it's going to straighten later.
Also, note that the Ancestral Armor of the Unicorn's Interrupt does not have the Home keyword, so even if it was unbowed, you couldn't use it in the situation described. Jon Palmer, "Roaming Caravan vs Ancestral Armor of the Unicorn Clan", 6 Jun 2014 - Q: With Interrupts being subject to the rule of presence, am I correct in my understanding that if Determined Challenge is used at a battlefield where the opponent has no presence, that he cannot interrupt with final sacrifice to cause me to pull in a Yojimbo instead of the pesky Shugenja I intended to target?
A: Indeed. Alex Jones, "Determined Challenge + Final Sacrifice", 9 May 2014 - Q: For emperor edition...my opponent has two units and attacks me with one of them. My opponent takes a province while I'm defending elsewhere. After my opponent takes a province, at my battlefield I attempt to use determined challenge to harpoon his other person, who has not been in battle resolution. Can my opponent use Ryoshun's Guidance (or any other redirection) to redirect the targeting to the unit that has already been in battle resolution? If so, what happens?
A: Yes, the opponent can redirect, and the "No Second Battle" rule will cause the harpoon movement to fail. 😦 Sad for you. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 30 Nov 2023
