Rules Q&A
- Q: Yuribata's Butterfly: Other player's Battle actions must target a Butterfly Personality at this battlefield, if legal. After another player's Battle action targets this card: Destroy this card.
Wide Valley: Before an action's effect destroys a card in a unit: Negate the destruction.
Rampant Paranoia: Until your next turn begins, other players' cards will not destroy your Personalities in a defending army.
So it's a fairly straight forward question, do Rampant Paranoia and Wide Valley allow me to have infinite butterfly protection?
A: No, sorry.
Wide Valley stops destruction from actions, but Butterflies are destroyed by their own trait.
And Rampant Paranoia stops destruction from other player's cards, but the Butterflies trait is on itself, and its your own card. Brook Cunningham, "Butterflies and destruction negation", 9 Jun 2013 - Q: If i use taskmaster while wide valley in play, will the follower destruction be negated? What if i play harsh taskmaster before wide valley in play, will the destruction be negated as well?
A: The trait on Wide Valley will trigger if it is in play when the destruction effect is applied, ie when the follower is about to be destroyed. It does not matter when the destruction effect was activated, ie whether Wide Valley or Harsh Taskmaster was played first. Alex Jones, "Harsh Taskmaster & Wide Valley", 11 Dec 2012 - Q: If Wide Valley is in play and a player uses the battle action printed on Ikoma Shinju will the card targeted by Shinju be destroyed?
A: The terrain and the enemy card are destroyed simultaneously, so at the timing point "Before an effect destroys a card", Wide Valley is still in play, and its trait triggers to negate the destruction of the enemy card. Alex Jones, "Wide Valley and Ikoma Shinju", 7 Dec 2012 - Q: Does Wide Valley stop the "unit destruction" of A Stain Cleansed (or similar unit kill effect)?
Wide Valley (trait) Before an action's effect destroys a card in a unit: Negate the destruction.
A Stain Cleansed Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Magistrate, target an enemy card without attachments or an enemy unit, and pay Gold equal to the card or unit's total Gold Cost minus 2: Destroy it.
Wide Valley negates the destruction of a card... but not of a unit. Is there a Rulebook clarification of unit kill being multiple card destruction or is it labeled separately?
A: Wide Valley's trait will negate the destruction of each of the cards in the unit.
See Glossary, Unit: A cost or effect like “Destroy a unit” or “Bow a unit” is considered to be multiple separate costs or effects, each affecting one card in the unit (see Definition of effects). Costs and effects on a unit are applied to the Personality and all cards in the unit at the same time. Alex Jones, "Wide Valley vs A Stain Cleansed", 28 Oct 2012
