Rules Q&A
- Q: Can you play No Way Out during a battle not associated with a province, for example from a battle created by Aramasu's Legacy stronghold or Ambush or Shinobi Assault? If so will the targets be destroyed the same?
A: You can certainly play No Way Out. However, its effect will always fail, since it needs a Province in order to check if it was destroyed.
Precedent. Jon Palmer, "No Way Out not at a province", 2 Jul 2013 - Q: What is the timing constraint on Yoritomo Iwashi's ability? Iwashi's ability states "Limited: If Iwashi has been in an attacking army when it won a battle since your last turn began, target a Personality: Bow him." I've essentially been reading that to mean that it can only be used on the same turn in which he won a battle, meaning only after an Ambush, the battle created by Aramasu's Legacy, or some other method of creating a battle during your own action phase, but now I've been made to question that. So I suppose the question is, are your "last" turn and "latest" turn the same turn, or can I win a battle with Iwashi's army on my turn, go through my opponent's turn, and then, on my next turn, activate his limited ability?
This is the only ruling on Iwashi I could find, but it doesn't deal with this question. http://www.alderac.com/forum/search.php?keywords=iwashi&terms=all&author=&fid%5B%5D=59&sc=1&sf=all&sr=posts&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
A: Your last turn is your turn prior to this one. Iwashi can be used if he was in a winning attacking army during the prior turn's normal attack phase; if he couldn't, he would say "since this turn began". Jon Palmer, "Yoritomo Iwashi", 19 Feb 2013 - Q: As worded, you can attack any player with the Limited battle, and then bow a personality belonging to any player at all in your multiplayer game. Not only is that rather abusive, but it just doesn't make sense at all from a thematic or mechanical perspective. Was Aramasu's Legacy worded as such with the intent of functioning that way in multiplayer? Because obviously players can help each other out, not defend, and give the AL player a free lockdown of any personality on the table for an entire round of turns.* Makes things a lot easier for players planning to ally later in the turn.
*In a 4 player game, with the locked-down unit belonging to player 1, and AL to player 2, not only will the personality be unable to straighten for 4 turns, but an entire 7 turns will elapse before the personality will straighten normally during its owner's straighten phase. Meanwhile, the AL player can of course target another personality with their stronghold.
A: You are correct, Aramasu's Legacy does allow you to target a Personality or Holding controlled by any player, not just on controlled by the target of its Limited ability - for both War of Honor and any other multiplayer format. Here on the Rules Team we don't really delve into designer intent, so that might be better answered with a conversation with a design team member, or at the very least, a discussion post in the War of Honor forum. Jon Palmer, "Aramasu's Legacy & War of Honor", 25 Jan 2013 - Q: This came up in a game the other night, and my poor comrade almost went into a fit of shocked anger over it so we wanted to be sure.
He performed the Limited action on Aramasu's Legacy. I defended with no one, so he won the battle. My sole personality was Asako Karachu. He then tried to bow Karachu and negate his straightening, but myself and others argued that it wouldn't work because immediately after Karachu bowed he straightened and therefore the negation didn't work much like a single copy of Caught Unawares wouldn't keep him bowed.
His counter argument was that its a different case then Caught Unawares, because the bow and negation is all one effect, not separate effects. Because CA has a period between the "Bow them" and "Negate their straightening" while AL does not ("you may target a Personality or Holding, bow it, and negate its straightening until after your next Straighten Phase ends.") that it worked differently.
A resolution would be much appreciated.
Asako Karachu After Karachu bows: Straighten him.
Aramasu's Legacy Limited: Create an additional Attack Phase, during which battle resolution does not destroy defending armies or provinces and does not bow your Mantis Clan Magistrates or your attachments. After it ends, if you won any of its battles (even against no units at resolution), you may target a Personality or Holding, bow it, and negate its straightening until after your next Straighten Phase ends.
A: According to Definition of effects, bowing a card and negating its straightening are two separate effects: An effect is anything, other than a cost, that creates a card or other thing in the game, changes the characteristics or state of a card, stat or other thing in the game, adds restrictions or permissions to the game’s procedures, or creates a new instance of a game procedure. Each individual change or creation of a card, a player, a game entity (such as Provinces), a game procedure is a separate effect.
Bowing a card is a change to its physically marked state. Negating its straightening is a modification to changes to its physically marked state.
The use of a comma or a full stop (or nothing) does not determine whether one or two effects are created. Alex Jones, "Asako Karachu and Aramasu's Legacy", 20 Dec 2012 - Q: So my question is with this, Am I able to play Undetectable enemy if my opponent wins a battle via Aramasu's legacy and what would happen as Undetectable enemy negates all effects of the action thats targetting which from my understanding is mantis clan magistrates and attachments not bowing to resolution, the bowing and straighten negation + unresolved battles yet to occur.
Aramasu's Legacy PS/GP/SH 7 4 2 Text Limited: Create an additional Attack Phase, during which battle resolution does not destroy defending armies or provinces and does not bow your Mantis Clan Magistrates or your attachments. Undetectable Enemy Cost 0 Text Reaction: After another player's action targets your Oni: Negate its effects.
Thanks.
A: The targeting of the Personality occurs after the Attack Phase created by the action, but all the battles occur during the Attack Phase. When the Personality is targeted, the only outstanding effects of the action are the bowing and the negation of the straightening: these are the only effects negated by Undetectable Enemy. Alex Jones, "Aramasu's legacy + undetectable enemy.", 28 Oct 2012 - Q: If I have won a battle via Aramasu's Legacy and give my opponent a Goju Asuka in my dynasty phase, can my opponent choose the personality 'locked' by my stronghold to satisfy the effect of Asuka?
What if I have given my opponent two Asukas, can he choose the same personality twice?
Aramasu's Legacy: Limited: Create an additional Attack Phase, during which battle resolution does not destroy defending armies or provinces and does not bow your Mantis Clan Magistrates or your attachments. After it ends, if you won any of its battles (even against no units at resolution), you may target a Personality or Holding, bow it, and negate its straightening until after your next Straighten Phase ends.
Goju Asuka: After Asuka enters play: You may give control of her to another player. Asuka may not assign, and will not move, into a defending army. After a Straighten Phase begins: Choose your bowed non-Spider Clan Personality. Negate his straightening this phase.
A: Yes and yes. Jon Palmer, "Aramasu's Legacy & Goju Asuka", 18 Oct 2012 - Q: does the additional Attack Phase for Aramasu's Legacy happen before the normal one, after it, or when the controlling player choose s it to be?
A: Immediately when you take the action. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 9 Aug 2024
