Rules Q&A
- Q: (I)f Blanketed Forest is in play and i play Superior Mobility(...), the movement fails and the personality is destroyed?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Superior Mobility + Blanketed Forest", 13 Oct 2010 - Q: if yes, Superior Mobility has destroyed the personality ?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Superior Mobility + Blanketed Forest", 13 Oct 2010 - Q: Does "bring into play" constitute or equal movement? Specifically, does the card "Blanketed Forest" stop cards like "Will", "Tsuruchi Gosho", and other "bring into play" effects from occuring at its battle?
A: "Bring into play" does not constitute movement.
Blanketed Forest will not prevent bring into play effects such as Will, Tsuruchi Gosho, etc. Dan Jacobson, "Movement vs. "Bring into play", & Blanketed Forest", 4 Feb 2010 - Q: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_C#Cannot (emphases mine): "In card text, when referring to entering play, targeting, attaching, using a trait, or taking an action, "cannot" is a restriction on the legality of that thing in the first place, not negation of its effects."
Above is a quote I recieved in a previous question regarding determination's ability to preform actions you would not otherwise be able to preform.
I have a follow up question: Assume Blanketed Forest is in play and my opponant and I both have 2 units at the battle. Is it legal for him to announce an action that would move one of his personalitys home and then play determination so it's effects cannot be negated? Or is it just ilegal to announce any movement to or from this battle at all?
I have pondered this and it seems to me that he would be able to do this because the "cannot" on blanketed forest is (I think) negation and not referring to entering play, targeting, attaching, using a trait, or taking an action? It's the taking an action that is on point. The personality in this case is not prevented from preforming actions so it seems to me that the cannot on blanketed forest is negation.
A: There is no "cannot" on Blanketed Forest. Brook Cunningham, "Determination "cannot" question", 13 Apr 2009 - Q: I play Blanketed Forest, and after I annouce its battle (units can't move in or out), I play Determination. if someone tries to move their samurai into the same battle with, let's say Unwavering Assault and Determination, would they have to play two copies of it, since Blanketed Forest's battle is protected with a determination?
A: This one is basically dealt with here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=67205
Not exactly the same cards, but several.
That said, the issue of multiple Determinations is very difficult for people to wrap their heads around, as seen here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66277 Zen Faulkes, "Determination + Blanketed Forest, and movement", 3 Dec 2008 - Q: how long does effects of these terrains last (until battle ends or until end of turn)?
Three-stone river
Mountains of Phoenix
Blanketed Forest
A: Three-Stone River: Terrain Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, reduce the Force of each Personality at this battlefield to the Force of his highest-Force Follower, or to 1 if he has no Followers.
As described under Duration of Effects, when this takes effect, it creates a set of ongoing effects, one per Personality whose force is reduced; since there this is from a terrain and no duration is specified, the force reductions last until the terrain is discarded after battle resolution [FIXED].
Mountains of Phoenix: Mountain Terrain Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and the Defender each choose a unit in their own army; the active player decides who chooses first. Then, destroy the chosen units.
The destruction of a unit is an instantaneous effect; it has no duration.
Blanketed Forest: Winter Terrain Battle: The snow blocks travel, negating units' movement to or from this battlefield.
The negation of movement is a continuous effect; it lasts while the terrain is in play. Alex Jones, "Terrains", 16 Oct 2008 - Q: Could you please tell me the full result of playing Fight Another Day when Blanketed Forest is on the field?
A: Lose 2 Honor. Straighten all units in your army. Zen Faulkes, "Fight Another Day", 8 Sep 2007 - Q: Would you please tell me if Blanketed Forest and The Khan's Gambit satisfy the requirement of a Winter card?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Abilities: "An Action or Spell card inherits all keywords from all its abilities." Yes.
Added a pointer in the main Keywords section to the bit on Action and Spell cards. Zen Faulkes, "Yukari no Onna and Winter Cards", 7 Sep 2007 - Q: A Blanketed Forest is in play in the current battle. My opponent takes an action to destroy one of personalities and I react with a Shattered Ranks. The Samurai can't move home due to the Blanketed Forest effect but does he bow?
A: No, due to the way effects worked in Lotus when Shattered Ranks was written. Zen Faulkes, "Shattered Ranks + Blanketed Forest", 11 Aug 2007
