Rules Q&A
- Q: If Rampant Paranoia is in effect and I have an Ominous Armor equiped when my opponent tries to shoot me in the face , will the armor get destroyed or does Rampant Paranoia save my personality first?
A: Rampant Paranoia is a Prevention Effect. Ominous Armor is a Substiution Effect.
According to the rules on Timing Conflicts in the Comprehensive Rules, Rampant Paranoia will apply itself before Ominous Armor. Ben Higgins, "Rampant Paranoia & Ominous Armor", 21 Apr 2014 - Q: My buddies and I had a massive multi-player, mucho back-stabbing L5R fest last night. A few questions came out of it:
1. CoM event - Rampant Paranoia Text Limited: Until your next turn begins, other players' cards will not destroy your Personalities in a defending army.
Does this just mean cards that have abilities to destroy defending personalities or abilities that might end in the destruction of a personality? For instance, a duel that could destroy the loser. Would this be cancelled? What about the attack itself? I the defenders lose the battle, are they still destroyed under Rampant Paranoia?
Thanks for the help.
A: Ah, I remember those multiplayer brawls back when I started L5R back in the day...
But, reminiscence aside, Rampant Paranoia would indeed prevent destruction from a duel, because it is an effect of the card's ability (the stated effect of destruction upon the loser is right there on the card). Battle resolution destruction however, is caused by the Rulebook rules for resolving a battle, and would not be prevented.
I hope that helps! Brook Cunningham, "Rampant Paranoia Question", 13 Oct 2013 - Q: I play out of Twin Forks and resolve a Rampant Paranoia.
My opponent attacks me.
First action, I duel his guy and win.
His action he uses a kill action on the guy I duelled with (HE TOTALLY HAS A PLAN HE ISNT BAD HONEST).
Does the trait of TFC get burned from this action, or does the Rampant Paranoia prevent the trait from being burned?
*I know this is a variation on the 2 delayed negations applying, but I was wondering if the wording on Rampant changed things.
A: Nope, there is no difference between this and a double-delayed-negation conflict in the timing/priority due to Rampant Paranoia's slightly different wording.
The active player would choose whether Rampant's delayed prevention or Twin Forks' delayed prevention would trigger first, and then the second delayed prevention would have nothing to cause it to trigger because the first negated that trigger (per the timing sequence here). Brook Cunningham, "Twin Forks City + Rampant Paranoia", 7 Oct 2013 - Q: Yuribata's Butterfly: Other player's Battle actions must target a Butterfly Personality at this battlefield, if legal. After another player's Battle action targets this card: Destroy this card.
Wide Valley: Before an action's effect destroys a card in a unit: Negate the destruction.
Rampant Paranoia: Until your next turn begins, other players' cards will not destroy your Personalities in a defending army.
So it's a fairly straight forward question, do Rampant Paranoia and Wide Valley allow me to have infinite butterfly protection?
A: No, sorry.
Wide Valley stops destruction from actions, but Butterflies are destroyed by their own trait.
And Rampant Paranoia stops destruction from other player's cards, but the Butterflies trait is on itself, and its your own card. Brook Cunningham, "Butterflies and destruction negation", 9 Jun 2013
