Rules Q&A
- Q: In regards to this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108887
Since one would use Colonial Dojo well after the costs for Cavalry Escort must be paid, does that mean one cannot use Colonial Dojo to pay for the personality being recruited with Cavalry Escort?
~Andrew
A: Correction, Colonial Dojo (like School of Wizardry) has a trigger which states when it must be bowed, "When paying for a ...". Thus, these Holdings are bowed during the Pay Costs step of a Recruit action, including Cavalry Escort's Recruit action.
If you bow a Colonial Dojo while paying for a Recruit action, you must then choose a non-Unique Samurai; if you bow a School of Wizardry, you must then choose a Human Shugenja. Alex Jones, "Cavalry Escort", 4 Aug 2014 - Q: If I announce Cavalry Escort, and produce an insufficient amount of gold, can I additionally produce gold during the action's recruit effect? If no, how can I use a Colonial Dojo to pay for the action?
I see cavalry escort as being different from a lot of actions with variable gold cost, as it doesn't reference the amount paid in any way (as Deliberations does, for example), and it creates an effect that normally allows you to produce gold.
Thanks
A: I'm unsure of exactly where you're going with this question, but you produce the gold during Cavalry Escort's Recruit effect. This would also be when you would use Colonial Dojo. Jon Palmer, "Cavalry Escort", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: Hi,
I have Bayushi Kotomuri in one of my provinces. I wish to recruit him and I increase his cost with his invest ability, can I?
a) Bow Colonial Dojo to make him enter play for 0 gold cost, gaining his invest benefit. b) Bow Colonial Dojo to make hime enter play for 0 gold cost, and paying his invest cost additinaly to gain his invest ability. c) something else?
Does it work the same way if I use Cavalry Escort?
Thanks!
A: A) is the correct answer, you may use Colonial Dojo to pay both his base cost and Invest cost. The same is true when attaching Cavalry Escort - since it raises the Personality's cost by 5 and waives its own cost, Colonial Dojo will pay all related costs. Jon Palmer, "Colonial Dojo + Invest", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: Seriously hate being That Guy, but I hate unintended consequences more. From Page 22:
vs. this clarification:
The Reference Rules probably need updating. This "increasing required payments" does not seem to be intuitive, but it appears the intent is "to activate the Invest trait on a card, you may increase the Gold cost for the card to enter play by the additional cost" (which does not increase the Gold cost of the card). This allows for interactions with language on Colonial Dojo, for example, without making the Invest a separate cost to be paid.
The problematic and rules-lawyery phrase is "increase its Gold cost". Reword that and I believe "intent" has been achieved.
A: The reference rules are indeed a living document (in that like the CR, can be updated to reflect new mechanics and clarifications), and we will update them to reflect this clarification to Invest; Invest is not meant to increat a card's Gold Cost stat, but rather the variable amount a player must pay to Recruit, Equip or play the card.
Thank you for the concern, and don't be afraid to point out these inconsistencies; the Rules Team is only human, and occasionally use a lower case word (cost in this case) when another way of saying what we mean (as was stated in my ruling) would be better suited. Ben Higgins, "The continuing saga of Invest costs", 25 Mar 2014 - Q: Continued from here.
I don't think the stronghold would be able to stop Endo unless there was another one it play because the discard pile is an out of play area of the game. Is that Correct?
A: That is correct, but Abe did already say as much (emphasis mine, though perhaps he could've underscored it himself a bit better): Brook Cunningham, "Endo+Colonial Dojo and Scorpion SH", 23 Jan 2014 - Q: Noooo, don't remind the people the power of [colonial Dojo]! 😉
