Rules Q&A
- Q: I want to prevent Tsuruchi (inexperienced) from shooting my Akodo Dairuko at 9F by using Turtle's Shell. He would need to burn all 5 Arrow tokens to make that shot. How is removing tokens not a cost? Ruling it is not a cost is both counter intuitive and rewards slow play. Turtle's Shell: Interrupt: Negate the action's Melee or Ranged Attacks. Relevant ability on Tsuruchi (inexperienced): Battle: Destroy zero or more Arrow tokens on Tsuruchi. Ranged Attack with strength equal to twice the number of tokens destroyed. You may use this action three times per turn. Comprehensive Rulebook: Interrupt actions are announced during a non-Interrupt action – either the Interrupt’s player’s or another player’s – at the point after costs are paid and before the action’s effects start to resolve. The other action is suspended while the Interrupt’s player goes through the sequence of steps in the Interrupt action; then it resumes. An Interrupt may not be played to another Interrupt action.
A: The only costs in Ivory are bowing and gold costs. Arrow tokens are neither of these, and therefore, they are removed as an effect.
Since The Turtle's Shell is played before you reach that point, Tsuruchi's controller can choose to remove zero tokens if he knows it's not going to have an effect anyway. Jon Palmer, "Tsuruchi (Inexperienced)", 30 Nov 2014 - Q: I was playing against a player who controls Tsuruchi and he destroyed a token, making a ranged 2 to destroy my 2 force pers. So I used the card Iron and stone to reduce the ranged in 2. He says that he can destroy one more token to increase the ranged attack, like a interrupt, and this works too in cards with variable gold cost like Deliberations. I don't found this question in the rulebook so I'm asking, is this right?.
A: Well, here's the thing... your opponent IS taking Tsuruchi's action incorrectly, but more so than either of you realize.
After announcing the action, but before he does ANYTHING after the colon in the action (including destroying ANY tokens or choosing his targets for his Ranged Attack), that is when Interrupts are taken. You would have to play Iron and Stone before knowing how many tokens he will choose to destroy or what he will target.
Then, after you both pass any further Interrupts to the action, is when the effects begin to resolve, starting with him destroying tokens. Brook Cunningham, "Tsuruchi against Iron and Stone", 5 Sep 2014 - Q: Can I use Colonial Market to overpay for an Open or Limited action on one of my cards in play?
Example: Tsuruchi inexp loads tokens. Can I overpay and have 1 gold floating when he does so?
A: Well, first of all, you can't pay (or overpay) for actions that have no Gold Cost.
Second of all, Colonial Market's 1G-producing trait specifically restricts that 1 Gold to only being able to pay for an action. Thus, it can't "float" and pay for anything else; it HAS to pay for an action on a card in play. "Be produced for" =/= "pay"; wherein the latter means actually putting that Gold toward that cost.
