Rules Q&A
- Q: Just following up on my previous question, which seems to have been lost in the shuffle.
I have two questions. The first is, can a personality be invested if he enters play from somewhere other than a province, for example using Blood of the Preserver XP? I assume the answer is yes, since Blood uses the normal recruitment procedure and the comprehensive rules state that an invest cost may be paid, "when paying for a card entering play". Nevertheless, I'd like a confirmation ruling.
My second question pertains to the wording of the invest rules in the comprehensive rules. The relevant section states in part, "...a player may increase it's gold cost by the additional cost in its invest trait, once, to get an additional effect..." My question pertains to the definition of the word "once" in these rules. Clearly it means you can't "multi-invest", (ie, you cannot pay 6 gold for Sumusu Tanjin to put out 2 clout tokens) but what is the duration, in game terms, of the "once" restriction on the ability to use an invest trait? If a personality has already been invested once this game, then killed, then is returned to play using Blood of the Preserver XP, and furthermore assuming I have the option to invest when a personality enters play via blood, can I pay the invest cost a second time in one game to gain the effect? Assuming of course the card has not been turned down at any point.
A: The answer to both questions is Yes. Jon Palmer, "Invest + Blood of the Preserver XP follow up", 5 Jan 2015 - Q: Following this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=110475
What about Goju Saido? If I invested him the first time, and I bring him back later with Blood of the Preserver xp, he still costs 15G... but does he produce a new Melee 5 attack?
Also, what happens to his GC and Melee Attack if I try to Recruit him from my province (the first time) and I choose to Invest, but he doesn't enter play? (example 1: I don't have enough gold, example 2: he became Reserve and the Battle Recruit action is negated by The Sun Returns)
Goju Saido Invest 10: Melee 5 Attack (this cannot be Interrupted) that may target a card in a player's home (if otherwise legal).
A: Each Invest is a seperate triggered trait, that looks to see if the Invest cost was played the most recent time this card a) entered play for Personalities/Followers/Holdings, or b) was played for it's ability for Strategies.
If you Invested a Goju Saido, then that card was destroyed, then subsequently recruited again (without becoming face down and out of play), it's current Gold Cost would be 15, and if you wanted to get the Melee 5 Attack again, you'd have to Invest again, raising the Gold Cost of Saido to 25.
As for your second question, if for some reason an Invested Personality fails to enter play, the Invest increase of his GC has already happened, so assuming he doesn't go face down and out of play, he will remain at his higher Gold Cost, but you will not get the Invest effect. Ben Higgins, "Re: Returning Invested Personalities to play", 11 Nov 2014 - Q: If I invest Isawa Orinoko, and she dies, and I bring her back into play (with Blood of the Preserver, for instance), my impression is that her gold cost, since I invested in her, is 15 permanently (unless she becomes face down and out of play). She also permanently has the Fear 5 and Conqueror. However... does she re-enter play with the three +1F/+1C tokens? And, if not, can I invest her again to give her a second Fear 5 and refresh the tokens?
Invest : Give Orinoko three +1F/+1C tokens, then permanently give her Conqueror and the ability, "Fire Battle: Fear 5." This Invest cost cannot be reduced.
A: She would not get the tokens back, as they would have gone away when she left play and her re-entering play does not trigger reapplying them. Jon Palmer, "Returning Invested Personalities to play", 27 Oct 2014 - Q: First off, Koan's Robes states that it negates the first destruction of cards in the unit from another player's card.
If I use Unsettling Gathering to steal my opponent's:
1. Fueling the Flame, can I use the second ability "Fire Battle: Bow this Shugenja to make a Ranged 6 Attack. Destroy this Shugenja." and have Koan's Robes negate my shugenja's destruction?
2. Blood of the Preserver, can I use it's ability "Maho Battle/Open, *: Target your dead Personality. Bring him into play if his Gold Cost is equal to or less than the amount paid. Lose 2 Honor. Destroy this Item." to bring back my dead Personality and have Koan's Robes negate the Item's destruction?
Conversely, what if I steal my opponent's Koan's Robes? Does the trait trigger from my own cards?
A: 1. No
2. No
(3.) No
