Rules Q&A
- Q: Regarding this post.
Now the comprehensive rules are live and the exception to using out-of-play interrupts is printed (page 25):
Is there any reason why the False Ring of Fire isn't able to interrupt its open action that puts it into play?
A: There is no reason why the False Ring of Fire cannot Interrupt it's own Open ability to reduce the honor loss. Ben Higgins, "False Ring of Fire again", 22 Apr 2014 - Q: Wanted to post this to get confirmation that it works and to show how broken it is!
Turn 1 Flip Severed From the Emperor Bring it into play and react with the interrupt for 5 honor loss.. Mulligan all cards in my provinces and interrupt for 5 more honor loss. Use the Dynasty action to discard each card from my province interrupting each for 5 honor loss.
End turn under -20 and opponent wins on my first turn.
Totally unfair, game breaking combo that was allowed to get through the PDT and ruined my Kotei season. Dishonor is overpowered. FLIP TABLE! RAGE-QUIT L5R!
[EDIT] Okay sarcasm aside, my question is on the legality of the very first part: Using the interrrupt while the card enters play. There has not been an update to ruling made on on False Ring of Fire at http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic. ... &p=1412442. This was my failed attempt at humor.
Mod Edit: Changed the title of the question to reflect the actual question. -Ryushi
A: If you have a legitimate rules concern you're trying to bring up with this ludicrous example, please do so in another thread and with actual examples.
Otherwise, please refrain from these trolling posts in the official L5R Rules Question forum. Ben Higgins, "Severed from the Emperor and it's Interrupt", 25 Mar 2014 - Q: According the rules reference (page 9): Interrupt abilities on a card out of play may be taken if they Interrupt the action that brings the card into play. In this case, if the action has a “bow this card” cost, it is satisfied by bowing the card after it enters play, as a delayed effect.
1. Does this clarification mean that the False Ring of Fire can interrupt its own entering play action now? This assumes that a card is face-up in the temporary resolution area. 2. If a card is not face-up in the temporary resolution area how do you resolve its text?
Relevant text on False Ring of Fire: Open: If your maximum hand size is 10 or more, put this Ring into play and lose 2 Honor. Interrupt, w: Reduce all Honor gains and losses from an action by 2.
A: The False Ring of Fire may not Interrupt it's own Open action, "As with traits, abilities on cards not in play or in a resolution, entering-play or focusing area may not be used. (EE CR: Abilities and Actions)"
As to your second point, the Resolution Area is indeed a face-up, out of play, and temporary game area.
These and other Emperor Edition CR entries that were not included in the Ivory Edition Rules Reference doc can be assumed to be unchanged in Ivory Edition.
RULING REVERSED
The False Ring of Fire may indeed Interrupt it's own Open ability to reduce the honor loss. Ben Higgins, "False Ring of Fire", 14 Mar 2014 - Q: Quick question and I just wanted to be sure about this
Can you use the False Ring of Fire to actually negate its honor loss if when getting it into play via the entry conditions? For example, I have 2 Farmer's Markets in play and my max hand size is 10. I then proceed to put it into play as an open action.
I wasn't sure but from the wording it looked like you could since the action of putting it in should technically qualify for it. If not, I was just curious about the technical reason for it (mainly because I'm just trying to iron out corner cases right now)
Cheers!
False Ring of Fire: Does not count towards an Enlightenment Victory. Open: If your maximum hand size is 10 or more, put this Ring into play and lose 2 Honor. Interrupt, [bow symbol]: Reduce all Honor gains and losses from an action by 2.
A: No, because the Interrupt on False Ring of Fire would need to be taken before the effects putting into play have begun to resolve. Jon Palmer, "False Ring of Fire", 30 Jan 2014 - Q: question. under legacy rules. does corrupt geisha house exp allows to put the false ring of fire?
A: Kempy is correct. Infinity is higher than 10. 🙂 Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 29 May 2024 - Q: I have Togashi's Guidance in play. May I use Changing Path, naming False Ring of Fire to search for and immediately play the Ring?
A: Which Togashi's Guidance? Togashi's Guidance nonexp means you have no maximum hand size, which means you can't play False Ring of Fire.
Also, Changing Paths only triggers off Rings that enter play via Traits. False Ring of Fire enters play by an action, so they don't interact.
Also: Changing Paths won't let you search for any of the Rings, that... yeah Alex Jones and Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 17 Nov 2023
