- They were the most important men in the empire yet it did not matter now. Even they could do nothing against the numbers that surrounded them. Kaneka slowly raised his blade and heard a deep laugh echo through his mind.

Rules Q&A
- Q: Yoritomo Nishigori states:
Once per turn, if Nishigori is unbowed, produce 3 Gold which can only pay for a single Strategy's action.
I use that trait to pay for a Death of the Winds (2GC). What happens to the floating 1 gold?
A: It is effectively lost. All 3 gold will "only pay for [that] single Strategy's action". The one extra exists, but it's restricted to only be allowed to pay for the action for which you don't need it because it only cost 2G, so there's nothing else you can do with it. Brook Cunningham, "Yoritomo Nishigori", 29 Oct 2014 - Q: Just a clarification, can you play Death of the Winds and use the rulebook "Tactical Advantage" on the same Tactician during a battle? Or multiple Death of the winds on a single Tactician?
I'm asking because in EE and before there was a limit of one "Tactical" action per tactician per battle, but the Ivory manual does not have anything regarding this limit. So, i think it's allowed now, just wanna be sure.
Thanks,
A: There are no rules for Tactical actions in Ivory. The only rule is that Tacticians have an ability on them granted by the rulebook, and called "Tactical Advantage", but the ability does not have the Tactical keyword. See the Comprehensive Rules, p58. Nothing stops you using a Tactician's ability and targeting him with Death of the Winds in the same turn.
Anyway, Death of the Winds is not a Tactical action - even under Emperor Edition rules, you could target one Tactician with any number in one battle, if you had the gold to spend.
Btw, the limit from Samurai Edition to Emperor Edition was one Tactical action per Tactician per turn, not per battle. Alex Jones, "Death Of The Winds and "Tactical"", 30 Apr 2014 - Q: Based on that : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=102302 - is this valid play?
1. Play Death Of The Winds - search for a card that does something bad 2. React with Without Mercy 3. Play a different card than the one searched for, that of course also does something bad 4. Play a card search for with Death Of The Winds.
I'm 95% convinced that it is, but since the wording changed a little bit with IvE cards, maybe it's worth to ask...
A: Because Death of the Winds isn't performed, it's not a legal trigger for Without Mercy. So you'd have to choose an action with Death of the Winds that was performed by your samurai and didn't target your opponent, then you could react to THAT action with Without Mercy and take another additional. Jon Palmer, "Death Of The Winds + Without Mercy", 31 Jul 2013 - Q: If I play Death of the Winds and search for a card that I cannot play (something that requires opposition while I am unopposed, searching for a terrain while their is already one in play, etc) what happens to the card. It stays in my hand or is it discarded?
If I search for a card that I cannot play, does this count as having passed?
Paul Ashman
A: An action taken as an additional action does not count towards ending the current action round if you pass: This additional opportunity to act can be used to pass; the choice to pass is made at the point of taking the additional action. If you pass, this does not count towards ending the action round.
If you do not play the card, it is just discarded, as described under Search: If an effect directs a player to search for a card and do something with it (such as play it or put it into the hand), and that thing fails, the card is discarded instead. Alex Jones, "Death of the Winds", 11 Jun 2013 - Q: [OBH]
Regarding good faith: My opponent plays deadly ground. Can I use a tactician to use (superior strategist/The Death Of The Winds) to search for a way to destroy Deadly ground?
A: No. The only actions playable are ones that directly remove it, not indirectly. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 2 Aug 2026
