Rules Q&A
- Q: Two questions.
1. If my opponent plays Lakeside Retreat but has nobody bowed and I do, wouldn't Lakeside force him to straighten my personality or follower?
2. If I Calv a unit into a battlefield and then attach a non-calv follower does that now make the Unit a non-cavalry unit and thus eligible for protection from Temple Grounds?
A: 1) No. The Terrain's trait doesn't specify that a bowed card need be chosen. He could choose to straighten one of his Personalities or Followers that is already unbowed, and have the straightening simply fail.
2) Your question seems to be making some assumptions about the game state that aren't explicitly delineated in what you wrote, but I'll try to ignore those and answer as plainly as possible:
If you have a Cavalry unit at a battlefield and, during the battle, attach a non-Cavalry Follower to it, then it is no longer a Cavalry unit while that Follower remains attached. So, after you do that, if you have Temple Grounds in play at such a battlefield, and the other player controls no units there, his Battle actions WOULD be negated by Temple Grounds' trait. Brook Cunningham, "Lakeside Retreat, Temple Grounds", 30 Apr 2014 - Q: Under emperor editions rules. In emperor there is no engage phase yet, so the card Temple Grounds only has a battle action, the engage would not apply is what I think, can someone confirm?
A: I believe Engage was introduced in late Emperor. Note there are cards from dual bugged sets (Coils, Aftermath, Gates of Chaos) that have exclusively Engage actions/interactions.
(Replying to a player: "but an engage phase was added in the rulebook? or just cards with engage in preparation for ivory?") I believe it was added to the online Comprehensive Rules. They didn't add cards for 3 sets that did nothing. Check Kempy's Google Drive link pinned in the completed Emperor simulation tournament channel; I bet it's there.
(Replying to a player: "Follow-up question: That terrain basically negates absent actions, right?") As long as you, the person who played the Terrain, don't control a Cavalry unit there, yes, any action taken Absently is negated; though, not to say an action with the Absent keyword would be negated if its player actually has someone at the Terrain's battlefield, if you follow me?
