Rules Q&A
- Q: Guidance in War says "while this spell is attached." It has already been ruled that using an Unsettling Gathering to move the spell will end the bonuses. What if the spell gets moved back to its original target?
Basically, is "while" a fixed duration (from when it is attached to when it ceases to be attaches), or a condition that is continually checked?
Thanks
A: "While" by itself is not the fixed duration, however "while it remains attached" is a fixed duration. Once the Spell becomes unattached to the Shugenja it was most recently brought into play attached to, the bonuses end and will not reapply. (see CR entry for Remain, pg 59.) Ben Higgins, "Guidance in War", 2 Dec 2014 - Q: We have doubts about how exactly works the trait "This Spell's Invest effects last while it remains attached to the Shugenja". text: Guidance in War
a) Unsettling Gathering transfers the spell to another shugenja. What happens with its bonuses?
A: The bonuses are lost. Ben Higgins, "Guidance in War", 24 Aug 2014 - Q: My oponent targets one of my spells with Unsettling Gathering.
I Interrupt with Final sacrifice, targetting one of my Yojimbos.
Can I do this, does my Final just fail? Or does the Gathering fail? Or both?
Thanks for your time.
Edit. My apologies. Just saw that he could target any attachment on the table (because interrupts come before targeting. :S) but the target of Unsettling must be my yojimbo.
If this is true, must he target an attachment that can legally attach to my yojimbo even if it is one of his attachments?
Edit. Ok, I understand this is a bit of a mess, do you want me to reword it? I am quite happy to do so if needed.
A: It depends on if your Yojimbo is a Personality or an attachment.
If you target your Yojimbo Personality, he must attach the moved attachment to your Yojimbo Personality. If he cannot attach the attachment, the effect fails.
If you target your Yojimbo follower, it must be the attachment selected to move. It can be moved to any Personality, but again, the attachment must be legal or the effect will fail.
Please remember that Final Sacrifice is played before ANY targets are chosen. So your opponent will be able to choose his targets based on the restrictions of Final Sacrifice. Jon Palmer, "Final Sacrifice and a spell.", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: So I got to thinking about this due to hellbeast, and then read the ruling here viewtopic.php?f=59&t=106530&p=1403842&hilit=unsettling#p1403842 and am still a bit unclear on what exactly happens.
If you unsettling an item that causes honor loss when it is attached, like say hellbeast, does that then make you ignore honor requirements for the rest of the game (this is of course assuming that it is not a hellbeast that came out of your deck to begin with). What I've read points to yes, that it indeed does make you ignore honor requirements, as the honor requirement specifically states that if any honor loss comes from a card you don't own (or the rulebook) that you ignore HR for the rest of the game. And card ownership in the rules states:
A card is owned by the player whose play deck it was originally in, or the player who brought it into play if the card was created or brought in from outside the play deck. A card’s ownership can not change.
So even though it is now the sometimes ambiguous "your" attachment as per the ruling cited above, as hellbeast is not a card that you "own" and it is causing honor loss, that means you can circumvent honor requirements in this instance after losing the honor for attaching hellbeast?
If this is correct as I believe it to be, while a somewhat isolated case, it really does feel like it flies in the face of the intent of the honor requirements rules (which seem to be geared towards the idea that as long as you aren't directly responsible for your honor loss then you can ignore HR) and should possibly be looked at for accommodation? Though that is just my opinion of course
Edit (post-answer): Whelp, that's what I get for not actually reading unsettling gathering and basing my question on hellbeast
A: You don't lose Honor for stealing someone's Hellbeast.
Transferring =/= Equipping. Brook Cunningham, "Unsettling Gathering + Items that cause honor loss", 1 Jun 2014 - Q: Related to the answer given here:
Does the Gold cost increase from Invest last until the end of the turn?
If the player in the original question pays 7 Gold to fully Invest and attach Clay Kshatriya, and his opponent wants to play (for example) Provoked Violence to destroy it, would it cost 7 Gold to do so on the turn the follower enters play? And then presumably, per the original answer, only 2G to destroy it on subsequent turns?
A: I have edited my answer in the referenced ruling to more accurately reflect what I was trying to say. The edited ruling should also answer your question here.
Invest does not increase the Gold Cost stat as previously alluded to, so Provoked Violence will always destroy a Clay Kshatriya for 2 Gold (or for free if you control a Yojimbo.) Ben Higgins, "Unsettling Gathering vs. Clay Kshatriya", 25 Mar 2014 - Q: How much gold do I need to pay to use Unsettling Gathering to target a Clay Kshatriya that was attatched WITH the invest cost paid?
A: Invest does not change the Gold Cost of a card. When paying for a card entering play, you may pay additional Gold for the card equal to the additional cost in its Invest trait, once, to get an additional effect after it enters play (for example, “Gain 1 Honor” or “Give this card a +2F token.”) This does not increase the Gold Cost stat of the card, but is treated as other effects that increase required payments by using "paying" language.
For the purposes of Unsettling Gathering, an Invested Clay Kshatriya would only require 2 Gold to transfer.
EDIT: For clarification. -Ryushi Ben Higgins, "Unsettling Gathering vs. Clay Kshatriya", 25 Mar 2014 - Q: First off, Koan's Robes states that it negates the first destruction of cards in the unit from another player's card.
If I use Unsettling Gathering to steal my opponent's:
1. Fueling the Flame, can I use the second ability "Fire Battle: Bow this Shugenja to make a Ranged 6 Attack. Destroy this Shugenja." and have Koan's Robes negate my shugenja's destruction?
2. Blood of the Preserver, can I use it's ability "Maho Battle/Open, *: Target your dead Personality. Bring him into play if his Gold Cost is equal to or less than the amount paid. Lose 2 Honor. Destroy this Item." to bring back my dead Personality and have Koan's Robes negate the Item's destruction?
Conversely, what if I steal my opponent's Koan's Robes? Does the trait trigger from my own cards?
A: 1. No
2. No
(3.) No
While you control a card, its text is read from your perspective, regardless of who owns it. Brook Cunningham, "Koan's Robes and another player's card", 26 Jan 2014 - Q: Wary peace:
Suppose someone uses Unsettling Gathering on my attachment and transfers it to one of his personalities. May I play Wary Peace and target it while it is under his control?
A: No. In this instance "your" references control, not ownership. Ben Higgins, "Unsettling Gathering + Wary Peace", 17 Jan 2014 - Q: A buddy of mine and I ran into this situation, and we weren't too sure of the ruling on it.
Player 1 has a Bayushi Sneaky-Courtier equipped with a Court Attendants. On Player 2's turn, they decide to use Unsettling Gathering on the Court Attendants, and attempts to transfer the follower to Daigotsu Undead-Not-Courtier. However, since Daigotsu's undead minion doesn't have the requisite Keyword requirement, the follower doesn't attach and ends up in Player 1's discard pile.
Question: Is this what should happen? Since the targeting of the follower happens before the targeting of the personality (or minion) that it transfers to? Or, is it the case that the transferring must transfer to a legal target, meaning someone that has the Courtier keyword?
Much thanks for any clarification on the situation!
A: Transfering an attachment must respect any requirements and/or restrictions of the attachment.
As such, you cannot target an non-Courtier with Unsettling Gathering if you intend to transfer Court Attendants, as per your example. Ben Higgins, "Ivory Rules Q.: Unsettling Gathering + 'Restricted Item'", 3 Jan 2014
