Rules Q&A
- Q: When my friends and I first got into L5R with Ivory Edition, we thought calvary didn't have the once per turn rule and when someone pointed out that it does, we couldn't find out why. One reason was made that the Cavalry action is not repeatable, so you can only use it once per turn. The thing that still confuses us is why this effects different cards. Sure each card with cavalry can only move once, but why can't every card with cavalry move once? Why doesn't this effect every card with like abilities? For example, if I have a Coastal Pearl Bed and a Yukihime's Hot Springs, can I use each one's open ability even though they are the same and not repeatable? Or how about if I have two Kabuki Theater Troupes, can I use each ones Limited action even though they aren't repeatable? Can I not use two Allied Efforts in the same turn since they are the same abilities and don't have repeatable?
I'm in no way saying Cavalry needs to be changed or isn't strong, I think it is fine the way it is, I am just trying to clarify the ruling that makes it only once per turn.
A: Well, unlike the "Tactician" keyword, which gives a separate copy of the Force-boosting ability to each Personality with "Tactician", Cavalry doesn't do that.
As a player, you only have a single copy of the Cavalry-movement ability, located in the Rulebook, not one copy per Personality. The same goes for the Naval Invasion ability, the Equip ability (but Equip is Repeatable, so you can do it as many times as you want in your turn), and so on.
I hope that explains things. Brook Cunningham, "Clarification of Repeatable and multiple copies of cards.", 24 Apr 2014 - Q: Following this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=106415&p=1402675
I am under the impression that an aspect of the question is missing... Detailing the situation: let's say that there is just Tochiko and Ujirou opposing each other when th Engage segment starts. 1) Before Ujirou's action is taken, Tochiko has 7F and Ujirou has 3F 2) Ujirou boosts to 7F, so Tochiko's boost no longer applies, so his force becomes 5 Is this what is supposed to happen?
In fact, applying Tochiko's trait is a bit weird, because its effect can change its own condition of activation.
Let's take another situation. Tochiko is facing two personalities: Bob who has 4F, and Joe who has 0F, so Tochiko has 7F. Joe participates in a Strategic Withdrawal: he goes home and gives -3F to Tochiko. I would say that Tochiko has 2F because his trait no longer applies. If Tochiko's controller then plays Allied Efforts to give -3F to Bob, I would say the situation becomes Tochiko 4F vs. Bob 1F.
More generally, my interpretation is that Tochiko's trait is either active or inactive, then you apply a new effect, and finally you check if Tochiko's boost remains / switches off (if it was active) or activates / remain inactive (if it was inactive). Am I right?
A: Yes, all that you've said here is correct. Jon Palmer, "Tochiko vs. Daidoji Ujirou or force penalties", 31 Mar 2014
