Rules Q&A
- Q: so since the interrupt window has changed with the new rules When doe's the RoE interrupt happen? Does it happen when you does the move action or after the cost is paid and the target decalred?
A: Are you asking when Ring of Earth's interrupt is taken, or when it stops the movement?
It would still be taken during the Interrupt step, and stop the movement when Gensai attempts to move. Since Gensai's targeting is optional, it does not occur during the normal choose targets step of the action sequence (step C), but instead when you reach its clause in the action's resolution. This will be after Ring of Earth stops Gensai's movement, and therefore the trigger for Gensai's optional ranged attack will not exist. Jon Palmer, "Daidoji Gensai and RoE interrupt", 1 May 2015 - Q: Can Unholy Strike be used to increase Gensai's Range attack? I assume that if it can, I have to play Unholy Strike as an Interrupt to his action's declaration.
A: Yes, you may use Unholy Strike to Interrupt the action. You may even then choose not to discard the card to perform a Ranged Attack, if circumstances arise that warrant it. Jon Palmer, "Daidoji Gensai yet again", 7 Oct 2014 - Q: Can I have a Daidoji Gensai currently at the battlefield use his ability and make a ranged attack even though he didn't move?
A: No. This is why he says "After he moves" - if he didn't move, you don't fulfill the condition, and can't use the Ranged Attack.
Note that since that effect also happens after he moves, if your opponent prevents the movement (via Ring of Earth, Ancestral Armor of the Unicorn, etc) or Interrupts the action to prevent a Ranged Attack (via Turtle's Shell) you don't have to discard the card even if you'd planned to. Jon Palmer, "Daidoji Gensai movement require to RA?", 29 Sep 2014 - Q: If my Crane opponent announces Daidoji Gensai's Home Battle action, and I interrupt with Final Sacrifice onto my Yojimbo (with no followers) at the current battlefield, is he then forced to discard a card (if able) in order to make a ranged attack targeting that yojimbo? (assuming Gensai's movement is successful)
And would this be different if the Crane player had Sacred Temples in play?
Relavent card text: Daidoji Gensai Home Battle: If Gensai would be opposed, move him to the current battlefield. After he moves, you may discard a card to make a Ranged Attack with strength equal to the card's Focus Value.
Final Sacrifice Interrupt: Target your Yojimbo. The action must target him, if legal.
Sacred Temples Other players' actions will not discard cards from your hand.
A: If the Crane player has Sacred Temples in play, no use of Gensai will trigger it - it's Gensai's controller's ability forcing the discard.
Final Sacrifice will not force Gensai's controller to activate his ranged attack ability. It is still an optional ability, and they can choose not to use it, in which case his ability produces no targeting and the Yojimbo will not be targeted. Jon Palmer, "Daidoji Gensai vs Final Sacrifice", 24 Sep 2014 - Q: If Daidoji Gensai has say a Spearmen attached to her and moves into a battle with her ability. can she combine her ranged attack with the spearmen?
A: No, as the combination is done as an Interrupt, and the Ranged Attack ability on Spearmen does not have Home, which is where the Spearmen would be when their action is announced. Alex Jones, "Daidoji Gensai and Combining Ranged attacks", 14 May 2014 - Q: A few questions on the card previewed today for the upcoming set:
1. How long does the bonus focus value last? Only while they are being revealed, or until end of turn like most bonuses?
2. If past the reveal, do they stack? For instance I use a couple "Destiny has no secrets" revealing my hand twice and activate two Voices, do they retain both of those +1 FV if I then use Daidoji Gensai
3. If they retain the +1FV and are then focused, do they continue to retain the bonus since they cant gain it while being focused but seemingly would gain this from the previous actions.
A: Please note the stickied post above regarding questions for cards from The Coming Storm. Thanks! Jon Palmer, "Voice of Experience/+1FV", 22 Apr 2014 - Q: Home Battle: If Gensai would be opposed, move him to the current battlefield. After he moves, you may discard a card to make a Ranged Attack with strength equal to the card's Focus Value.
Under Ivory rules, do you have to have presence at the battlefield to use Gensai's battle ability? Cheers.
A: Yes. The exceptions to the Rules of Presence and Location are going away with Ivory Edition, being replaced by the rules for the Absent and Home keywords. Alex Jones, "Daidoji Gensai (IE Rules)", 15 Dec 2013
