Rules Q&A
- Q: After this recent question (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108471), I wondered about reversing the situation.
That is to say, if I discard a 4FV card to Tactical Advantage on a personality with Aramasu's Mask, and then my opponent plays a strategy with 3FV, may I interrupt his action with Voice of Experience or Reverse Fate in order to increase the FV of his strategy to 4, and then interrupt with Aramasu's mask to negate it?
I guess the core of the question comes down to: does playing a strategy count as "discarding" it?
A: Playing a strategy for it's action is not the same as discarding or showing it as an effect of an action.
You cannot use Voice of Experience to pump the Focus Value of a Fate card being played. Ben Higgins, "Aramasu's Mask and FV buffing", 27 May 2014 - Q: Aramasu's Mask provides the Tactician keyword, Tactical Advantage ability 'n' all, and also lets one negate an ability on a Fate card with the same Focus Value of the card discarded for Tactical Advantage in that turn.
Voice of Experience is a holding that raises the FV of a discarded or shown card by 1. Reverse Fate is a spell that raises or decreases the FV of a discarded card by 1.
Lets say for example I discard a FV 3 for a Tactical Advantage action granted by Aramasu's Mask and use Reverse Fate or Voice of Experience to raise that value by +1.
Later that turn, my opponent uses an ability on a Fate card that has 4 FV. Does the discarded card for Tactical Advantage count as a 3FV or 4FV due to Reverse Fate or Voice of Experience?
A: The discarded card still has a 4FV until the end of the turn, as it is still under the effect from Reverse Fate/Voice of Experience (having only gone out of play, and not also face down).
As such, when Aramasu's Mask compares the two Focus Values, it only looks at what the card has currently for a stat value, which is 4. Ben Higgins, "Aramasu's Mask, Reverse Fate/Voice of Experience, & Discard", 27 May 2014 - Q: It is my understanding that interrupts cannot be taken without presence. I just wanted to clear something up for a deck I put together.
1) At home, I bow Aimi and discard a card. I can then bow Reverse Fate on a Shug at home to increase by 1 and use the interrupt on Voice. Is that correct?
2) At Battle, I discard a card for my Tactician's Advantage, can I then use the Voice interrupt or is it considered at home? Also would the Shug be able to interrupt with Reverse Fate from home or would they be required to be at the battle?
A: Only cards in units are bound by the Rule of Location. Holdings are not cards in units, so abilities on them can be used even though they are not at the current battlefield (exception: Fortifications). Spells in play are cards in units, so non-Home abilities on them - such as Reverse Fate's - may not be used while the card is not at the current battlefield. Alex Jones, "Voice of Experience and Reverse Fate", 23 May 2014 - Q: Hello,
I had question about this since I think Invest is technically a trait, but I wasn't sure if discarding is technically an action.
If I use Susumu Takada's Invest action, can I use Reverse Fate to increase the FV of the card I discard or not?
Susumu Takada - Invest (3gc) : Discard a card to gain Honor equal to its Focus Value. Reverse Fate - Void Interrupt, (Bow): Give the first card discarded by the action +1FV or -1FV.
Cheers!
A: You are correct that Invest is a trait, not an action, and therefore Reverse Fate will not assist you with it. Jon Palmer, "Susumu Takada Invest + Reverse Fate", 5 Mar 2014
