Rules Q&A
- Q: If Absolution is used to Interrupt the action of an event that puts the event into play, does the event stay in the province and able to be used on later turns?
If Absolution is used to Interrupt the Open action of The New Order, does The New Order destory the province? If not, does The New Order stay in the province and able to used on later turns?
A: An Absolution'd Event is discarded. As stated under Events: Events in Provinces are discarded once an ability on them is used, unless the ability puts the Event itself into play.
The destruction of the province is an effect of The New Order's action, and is negated by Absolution. Alex Jones, "Absolution", 4 Aug 2015 - Q: I have seen this come up a few times.
Will Absolution prevent Political Standoff from coming into play?
Political Standoff: This Event will not be discarded or have its effects prevented.
Absolution: Interrupt: Negate an Event's effects.
My understanding is that you can negate it from coming into play, but once it is in play you cannot prevent it.
A: Well, obviously it wouldn't have Kharmic if it can't be Kharmic due to its trait.
However, for absolute clarity, some technical errata has been issued via Oracle. Brook Cunningham, "Politcal Standoff + Absolution", 16 Jan 2014 - Q: Howdy! I just had a quick question about this as it came up in our IE game last night. We weren't sure how this would resolve given the elimination of steps to action resolutions...
1) I played Purge of Fudoism, targeted an opponent's card, and destroyed it since the text says "target and destroy." We assumed that this happened in one step. 2) My opponent then targeted one of my cards in an attempt to destroy it BUT I played Absolution to negate the destruction.
We agreed the absolution would save my card but we weren't sure if it would save his card since the destruction had already occurred. Eventually we determined that it probably should save his card since the Absolution says "negate it's effects," which in EE usually meant all of the interrupted cards effects but we wanted to confirm this with the Rules Team.
So the question is: Does the negation only interrupt actions that are occurring and can occur in the future OR does it also retroactively negate all actions in the past as well?
Cheers!
A: The key here is the window for Interrupts. Interrupts are taken and resolved prior to the action's resolution. In this case the Absolution has to be played before either player destroys the other's Personality. Jon Palmer, "Purge of Fudoism + Absolution", 13 Dec 2013
