Rules Q&A
- Q: When you pay an Invest cost, how long does the increased cost persist on the card?
For Example, I play Mobile Troops paying the invest cost. My opponents next action is to play Provoked Violence (0 Yojimbo in play). Does he need to pay 1G or 4G to destroy my Mobile troops. What about if my opponent waits a turn to play Provoked Violence?
A: For a card entering play, Invest is a permanent change to the cost of the card.
This will be reflected in the next version of the Comprehensive Rules. Alex Jones, "Gold Cost and Invest", 3 Aug 2014 - Q: I'm sorry if this was asked and answered before
Short version : can a gold producing courtier be used to pay gold and trick the "bowing your courtier" with Provoked Violence?
Long version : If I play Provoked Violence while having only Yoritomo Yashinko (or another gold producing courtier) as an unbowed courtier, and use this courtier to pay part of the gold involved (hence bowing him)...
1) when announcing the action, I can "in good faith" do it, gold is optional and i have an unbowed courtier. 2) when arriving to the part where i have to bow one of my unbowed courtier, i don't have one anymore. 3) does the rest of the action proceed as normal, eg can Yashinko *play both parts*, bowing and producing 3g?

parts of CR that seem related (someone else did the research, sorry if i don't have exact references) A) "If an effect requires a target and the player cannot find a legal target, the effects stop immediately and no further effects or targetting happen" B) "Example: If an action’s required targeting becomes illegal during resolution, or the ability’s card leaves play during resolution, all remaining effects are still activated." C) "failing to meet targetting will stop later effects from happening". D) "The Good Faith rule takes into account future changes in the game state that are known to the player; for example, if Bob plans to play an Interrupt that gives the action a target it wouldn’t have when he announced it, this allows him to play the action, but also requires him to play that Interrupt having announced it."
A: Good Faith will allow you to announce the action; however, if you bow Yashinko to pay the gold cost, your targeting will fail when the first effect attempts to resolve. Point A) in your relevant points list below is the one in play here. Jon Palmer, "Provoked Violence, good faith, and Yoritomo Yashinko", 30 May 2014 - Q: Provoked Violence: Political Open (*) : Bow your target unbowed Courtier. Destroy a target attachment with Gold Cost less than or equal to the amount of Gold paid, plus 3 if you control a Yojimbo.
Incendiary Archers: Force 2/Chi 0 Gold Cost: 4 Battle, bow: Ranged 2 Attack. Battle: Fear 2.
If I want to destroy to follower Incendiary archers with Provoked Violence. How much gold should I pay, whether I have a Yojimbo and bow my courtier?
regards,
A: Well, first off, you have to have an unbowed Courtier to meet the action's required targeting at take it in Good Faith.
And if you control a Yojimbo, here's what you can do. Pay 1 Gold. Then, you can target any attachment with Gold Cost "less than or equal to the amount of Gold paid, plus 3 if you control a Yojimbo". You paid 1 (+3, you control a Yojimbo), so less than or equal to 4. Yay, dead Archers! Brook Cunningham, "Provoked Violence", 18 Apr 2014 - Q: Related to the answer given here:
Does the Gold cost increase from Invest last until the end of the turn?
If the player in the original question pays 7 Gold to fully Invest and attach Clay Kshatriya, and his opponent wants to play (for example) Provoked Violence to destroy it, would it cost 7 Gold to do so on the turn the follower enters play? And then presumably, per the original answer, only 2G to destroy it on subsequent turns?
A: I have edited my answer in the referenced ruling to more accurately reflect what I was trying to say. The edited ruling should also answer your question here.
Invest does not increase the Gold Cost stat as previously alluded to, so Provoked Violence will always destroy a Clay Kshatriya for 2 Gold (or for free if you control a Yojimbo.) Ben Higgins, "Unsettling Gathering vs. Clay Kshatriya", 25 Mar 2014
