Rules Q&A
- Q: Had a dispute with a member of my playgroup about how much gold you actually need to pay for Suffer the Consequences.
"Destroy a target enemy Follower or Weapon with Force less than or equal to the amount of Gold paid plus 2."
Suppose we're targeting a 2F Follower, do you have to pay 0 Gold (because 2F is less than or equal to 0 Gold paid + 2), or do you have to pay 4 Gold (because 2F + 2 is less than or equal to 4 Gold paid)?
Thanks!
A: Well, first of all, you decide what you're going to pay. Ivory-templated cards' targeting occurs AFTER actions' costs are paid (although, Good Faith still requires that a legal target for whatever amount of Gold you have available to pay exists before you can legally announce the card).
So, you play Suffer the Consequences and let's say you pay 0 Gold. Now, when resolving the action, you target an "enemy Follower or Weapon with Force less than or equal to the amount you paid +2. The "+2" modifies what it immediately follows, the amount you paid (not "Force"), so your first scenario is correct. That means you can now target a Follower or Weapon with Force less than or equal to (0+2)F; a 2F, 1F, or 0F Follower or Weapon, at your discretion.
