Rules Q&A
- Q: Scenario: Bayushi Shizuka targets Yoritomo Yasuke with her political open ability. Yasuke bows to produce 2 gold and shizuka's player passes. Then Yasuke uses his tireless open ability to straighten. Does A) Yasuke straightens and the player loses no honor because his ph is now 0. B) shizuka's ability causes him to lose 1 and he can't straighten.
I believe a is the correct answer, but iy happened in a game just now so we wanted an answer.
Relevant cards:
Yoritomo Yasuke- tireless open: dishonor yasuke to straighten him.
Bayushi Shizuka- political open: target a personality. After the next time (this turn) his controller assigns him, targets him, or resolves an action on a card in his unit, his controller loses honor equal to his personal honor, then dishonor him.
A: Since Shizuka's trigger is after the action resolves, he will already have dishonored and straightened when she attempts to dishonor him and force an honor loss. You will end up with a straightened Yusuke and no honor loss. Jon Palmer, "Yoritomo Yasuke vs. Bayushi Shizuka", 21 Jun 2014 - Q: If a Bayushi Shizuka targets say Bayushi JoeBob, and Bayushi JoeBob's controller then names Bayushi JoeBob with Shadowed Estate. Then uses an ability on Bayushi JoeBob, will the Shadowed Estates negation prevent the Shizuka delayed effect from going off?
A: No. Actions still "resolve" when they are taken, even if all their effects are negated. So, negating a Personality's action's effects won't protect that Personality from Shizuka's delayed effect. Brook Cunningham, "Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion", 23 Apr 2014 - Q: The shadowed estate reads: Tireless Open: Name a Fate card, or name a Dynasty card in play. Negate the effects of the next action from a card with that title.
Bayushi Shizuka reads: Political Open: Target a Personality. After the next time (this turn) his controller assigns him, targets him, or resolves an action on a card in his unit, his controller loses Honor equal to his Personal Honor, then dishonor him.
And the rulebook reads: A delayed effect that has been activated but not yet applied is an ongoing effect, and can still be prevented by something that prevents effects in general, such as "effects of that action do not happen." However, something that prevents a specific type of effect, such as bowing, will only negate a delayed effect when it is actually applied.
So I have a set of questions.
1. If someone uses Bayushi Shizuka on one of my guys, can I after the fact name bayushi shizuka with the shadowed estate, then do something that would trigger her effects only to have Shizuka's effects negated?
2. If my opponent's bayushi shizuka targets my bayushi shizuka, assuming the previous question does result in a "the opposing shizuka's effects are negated" ruling, if I use my shizuka's action, which shizuka's effects are negated? In short, will the shadowed estate negate the shizuka's action resolving that creates the delayed effect, or does it negate the delayed effect triggered by resolving shizuka's action?
Thank you!
A: 1. No.
Once you name a card with The Shadowed Estate, its negation will effect the "next action" to be taken from a card with that title. Just because some of the effects haven't occurred yet, an action taken from a Shizuka BEFORE she was named by The Shadowed Estate would not be the "next" action from a card with her title.
2. So, if your opponent uses his Shizuka, then you name Shizuka with the Stronghold ability, then AFTER THAT, you try to use your own Shizuka's action, YOURS would be the "next action" from a card with that title, and yours would be negated. So... don't do that. Brook Cunningham, "The Shadowed Estate and Bayushi Shizuka (delayed effects)", 18 Apr 2014 - Q: This situation came up in a match today, and I wanted to make sure my ruling was correct.
There is an already dishonored personality that is targeted by bayushi Shizuka. His controler equips a blessed sword to him.
What would be the timing of dishonoring/rehonoring?
A: It breaks down like this:
-Dishonored Personality A is the target of Shizuka's Open. (Setting up the delayed effect.) -Personality A's controller announces the Equip player ability. Personality A is targeted in step C of action resolution, which triggers Shizuka's delayed effect. -Resolve the delayed effect from Shizuka. (Personality A's controller loses 0 Honor and Personality A remains dishonorable.) -Finish resolving the Equip action. (Blessed Sword now attaches to Personality A.) -Blessed Sword's trait triggers, and the rules for Rehonoring substitute rehonoring Personality A for the Honor gain.
