Rules Q&A
- Q: Howdy!
I had a quick question about the following interaction:
Both my opponent and I have 4 provinces. My opponent attacks and takes my province (now 3 to 4.) I have a defender elsewhere who I play Reprisal on to counterattack and take his province (3 to 3.)
After my Reprisal phase attack, does the trigger still exist to play Retribution in reaction to my opponent's original attack.
If not, and I have to play Retribution before the Reprisal, does the order in which they get played matter. If not, how is it decided?
Cheers!
Reprisal Battle: Give your target defending or your target opposed Personality +1F for each card in his unit (including himself). After this Attack Phase ends, if he was defending and you have fewer Provinces than the Attacker, declare an additional Attack Phase against him, during which your other Personalities cannot attack.
Retribution Reaction: After the end of an Attack Phase in which you were the Defender: Declare an additional Attack Phase against that phase's Attacker, in which neither player may invite allies and you may only assign one Personality. Give the Personality and each Follower in his unit +1F after he assigns.
A: Reprisal will automatically trigger the attack phase after the other player's attack phase ends. However, this does not close the window for reactions played "after the end of an Attack Phase", such as Retribution. That window is only technically closed when both players pass on it. Therefore, you will still be able to Retribution after the attack phase created by Reprisal (but both your and your opponent will have a chance to react to the end of your Reprisal's attack phase first, so he might Retribution you!) Jon Palmer, "Reprisal + Retribution", 13 Mar 2015 - Q: Today We Die
If my personality is hit by Today We Die but cannot attack (Defensive Miko attached) do they still have to declare an attack and resolve all the battles? Attacking is not assigning, and assigning is necessarily attacking (he can still "legally assign" on defense if my opponent played a Reprisal). And if he did play a Reprisal, would I be required to assign him in defense even if he did not have the attached follower, too?
It was ruled earlier that he gets the token when he defends:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=107525&p=1415466
So that would imply that the effects (Declare and attack, assign him, and give him a token) are three separate effects that his controller MUST do but are NOT dependent on him legally able to assign to ATTACK.
Or should the card read
A: The "if he can legally assign" clause governs the "must declare an attack and assign him" portion (and that portion only).
If the Personality cannot legally assign, you are not forced to declare an attack. Brook Cunningham, "Today We Die & Cannot Attack Vs. Assign", 29 Jun 2014 - Q: If I play Reprisal on my personality and he is sent home, does Reprisal still trigger since he isn't defending any more.
A: Yes. The "if he was defending" means at any time during the prior attack phase, not the conclusion of it. Jon Palmer, "Reprisal and Sent Home", 2 May 2014 - Q: If I create multiple attack phases by either using Retibution after my opponent uses Retibution or by using 2 Reprisals (either being down 2 provinces, or just down one and failing to take from the first Reprisal) would attacking into the same province count as the same Battlefield for the sake of Back to the Front?
Relevant text: Absent Battle: Target your personality at any location that assigned to this battlefield (this turn) move him there and straighten his unit as he moves.
The wording of Back to the Front seems to suggest that it would be considered the same battlefield by specifying (this turn).
A: Nope. A new battlefield is created every time an attack phase starts (or in certain other situation), and the battlefields go away when the phase ends.
From the CR - "Even though a subsequent attack or effect may create a battlefield associated with the same Province as a previously existing battlefield, the new battlefield is a different area from the old battlefield." Jon Palmer, "Do multiple Attack phases create different battlefields?", 24 Apr 2014 - Q: The ruling on Force bonus tokens has caused me to question. If you are able to negate permanent force bonus tokens with Creating Order or Breaking the Rhythm wouldn't that also negate bonuses from weapons? If it does not negate weapon bonuses then where is the differentiation between permanent tokens/weapons?
Oh and new question, Can you Reprisal twice if you were down 2 provinces. What if they are played at two different provinces?
A: Weapons now give modifiers rather than bonuses, specifically for this reason.
Yes, you may Reprisal twice if you're down two provinces, and they can be played at the same province or different provinces. Jon Palmer, "My Question - Tokens,CO + BtR, and Reprisal", 7 Apr 2014
