Rules Q&A
- Q: Brotherhood Sensei:
The Remote Monastery of the Dragon, going second side:
What is the maximum potential hand size you can have when going second with Dragon while running Brotherhood Sensei?
A: Brotherhood Sensei sets your maximum hand size to 6. It then gives your maximum hand size a bonus equal to the number of Temples you control, to a maximum of 10. As described on p13 on the Comprehensive Rules, bonuses "to a maximum" are applied after other bonuses. So, if you are a Dragon player going second, with 4 (or more) temples in play, you would calculate your maximum hand size as 6 (basic) + 1 (Stronghold) = 7, then min(7 + 4 (your Temples), 10) = 10.
However, remember that other bonuses and penalties, without a "to a maximum/minimum" clause apply first. For example, if your opponent is a Scorpion, who has given you 3 House of Floating Petals Geisha Personalities, but you also have 6 Temples in play, the calculation is 6 (basic) + -1 (his Stronghold) + -3 (the Geisha) = 2, then min(2 + 6 (your Temples), 10) = 8.
Or, going the other way, if you're going second and have 2 Farmer's Markets, 2 Takujin and 3 Temples in play, your calculation goes 6 (basic) + 1 (Stronghold) + 2 (Markets) + 2 (Takujin) = 11, then min(11 + 3 (your Temples), 10) = 10. Alex Jones, "Brotherhood Sensei and The Dragon Stronghold", 30 Oct 2014 - Q: The Remote Monastery of the Dragon says "You cannot Recruit Monks with another Clan Alignment." But what if I gave a monk my clan alignment with Suikihime's Sanction? Technically the monk would still have another clan alignment even though it would have mine.
A: "Another" in this case means "other than yours". Now, very true, if you use Suikihime's Sanction on a Monk who already has a Clan Alignment other than yours, giving him yours still won't allow you to Recruit him.
However, if for some reason you use SS to try to give your only-Dragon Clan Monk another instance of "Dragon Clan", that doesn't cause any problems with the Stronghold for two reasons. First, if you try to give any card a keyword that it already has, that effect fails. So, it can never possibly have two instances of "Dragon Clan". And even if it could, that still wouldn't violate this sense of "another". Brook Cunningham, "The Remote Monastery of the Dragon & Suikihime's Sanction", 18 Apr 2014 - Q: Edit: It gets worst in Legacy as Monk is a clan alignment itself and therefore I would[n't] be able to play with almost any personalites.
A: Now, this one is just very true full stop. Unless/until a special Rule is made for that Stronghold in Legacy/Big Deck play, you will never be able to Recruit ANY Monks while using it in those Formats, whether they have your CA or not.
