Rules Q&A
- Q: Does bowing a courtier with Shibata Sensei satisfy the conditions of Claiming the Throne, or must one actually possess and discard the Imperial Favor its self?
I looked for a ruling, but the closest situation I could find was a thread from what I believe was Celestial Edition, which seems to suggest you can, but I'd like clarification.

A: Shibata Sensei's trait only applies to Favor actions. The player ability granted by Claiming the Throne does not have the Favor keyword, so actions from it are not Favor actions. Alex Jones, "Shibata Sensei and Claiming the Throne", 24 Jul 2015 - Q: Do Followers add force during resolution if the personality is bowed? The rule books do not state this clearly and back in my day they did not. However when I searched the forums I found reference to them still contributing but it was in reference to Celestial Edition.
A: Followers add force to their army's total even if the Personality is bowed.
This was changed for Diamond Edition (or so). Alex Jones, "Quick question", 27 Feb 2014 - Q: Hi
I didnt played Celestial Edition and decided to give L5R another go, so maybe I am asking stuff from Celestial but there are a few things troubling me:
1 - Can a bowed Shugenja cast a spell if the spell doesnt requires him to bow ?
2 - How does the Transfer action work ? No need to bow anything now, is there a cost or just move stuff arround as please ?
3 - The follower "Vigilant Riders" has an ability regarding destruction, does it work only to the follower or to any card in the unit ?
4 - It seems that now Followers force adds to total strenght of the army if the follower is not bowed regardles of the personality being bowed or not, is this correct ?
I honestly read the rulebook in a bit of a rush but I couldnt find answers to the first 2 questions, the 3rd it more a mechanic thing about how useful it would be if it only worked on follower itself.
Thanks a lot
Ps: Readed the rules again and question 4 comed up.
A: Welcome back!
1. Yes, there is no restriction on bowed shugenja casting spells. However, a bowed shugenja may not normally use the Battle Equip to attach a spell.
2. The transfer action was removed from L5R after Samurai Edition. You'll need to find a card effect if you want to move attachments.
3. Vigilant Riders says "negate this card's destruction" - this card always refers to the card on which the text is printed.
4. Correct, an unbowed follower will add to its army's total even if the Personality is bowed. This also changed after Samurai Edition. Jon Palmer, "Returning Player", 21 Feb 2012 - Q: in response to:

Reactions Another unnecessary rules complication was the rule that a reaction may only react once per trigger. In fact, in all of Celestial Edition it only ever affected one thing, the Seppuku ability, as all other reactions were once per turn by default. Due to its now outdated nature, we are removing it.
This is in a section for 'emperor edition rules changes'. Im confused how this does not mean you can pay for the same card with 2 separate reactions on a stronghold if Fires of War is in effect.
Edit:

Is the link that talks about the rules change
A: You are correct, and thanks for catching my mistake. I had missed that removal.
In the examples given, with Fires in War in effect, you may use the gold producing reaction from your Stronghold twice to pay for the same card. I've edited the original response as well. Jon Palmer, "The fires of war + Gold producing reaction", 24 Jan 2012 - Q: Dear Rules Team,
I seek your supreme wisdom and guidance once again, in relation to this ruling (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=75813&p=993982&hilit=encircled+impressive#p993982) that was made prior to Celestial Edition. Is there any change in Celestial Edition that would overturn this ruling? I'm not suggesting there is, but would like verification to solve a play-group dispute over the interaction between these 2 cards (if any).
The argument being presented to me is that anything that happens prior to resolution of a battle IS in the combat segment, and therefore Impressive Resilience would stop encircled terrain from moving a personality under its effects home.
Relevant Text
Impressive Resilience: Battle: Give a target opposed Personality +2F. Negate his bowing and movement during the current Combat Segment.
Encircled Terrain: Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and Defender, in the order of your choice, each choose one of their units at the current battlefield. Move all other units there home.
Thanks in advance for enlightening us,
HN
A: The original ruling is correct.
Even though the Combat Segment and Resolution Segment happen right next to each other, there is a moment of "neither" in between the two, as there is between all steps in any sequence. This is where triggers "after X ends" and "before X (begins)" live.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Triggers: "A trigger of "after" one step in a sequence ends will happen prior to the trigger of "before" the next step begins. Both triggers happen between the two steps.
Example: A triggered trait with the trigger "after your Dynasty Phase ends" comes before a triggered trait with the trigger "before your End Phase begins,” and happens in neither phase." Brook Cunningham, "Impressive Resilience + Encircled Terrain", 7 Apr 2010 - Q: Hi,
I have a doubt about the "Celestial Edition Location rule" during the battle action segment.
Here are the different cases : 1/ I control 3 Shinbone Warriors at the current battlefield. I use the open action : The Shinbone Pack is brought into play at the current battlefield, I think. 2/ I control 3 Shinbone Warriors at the current battlefield and one other at home. 2.1/ May I choose the Shinbone Warriors at home to perform his open action ? I think no because he is not at the current battlefied. 2.2/ I choose one Shinbone Warrior at the current battlefield to perform the open action, may I destroy this way the Shinbone Warrior who his at home (I need to destroy 3 of them) ?
Card Text : Shinbone Warrior Open: Target and destroy 3 Broken Shinbone Tribe cards you control: Search your Dynasty deck, then discard pile, for a Shinbone Pack. Bring it into play at this location, ignoring costs.
Thanks in advance, Rémi.
A: 1. Correct. The effect is worded slightly poorly, since if you destroy the card whose action you are taking for its cost, it is no longer IN a "Location" when the entering play effect checks. So, consider that to be referring to the location when it took the action, which would be the current battlefield in your example.
2.1 and 2.2. No, you cannot target cards at home for the cost when taking the action during a battle, because of the Rule of Location as you surmised. Brook Cunningham, "Celestial Edition Location rule VS Shinbone Warrior", 6 Apr 2010 - Q: Now, with the Celestial Edition rulebook, the stronghold is a card. Does it mean that it is possible to bow Rosoku Sensei to pay for the action printed on the Stronghold ?
A: Strongholds became cards in Samurai Edition. Rosoku's proper interaction with High House of Light has already been preserved in Legacy Rules:
For cards printed before Khan's Defiance: "Use of the word "card" does not refer to Strongholds unless explicitly stated (ie "actions on cards" does not refer to actions on a Stronghold)." Brook Cunningham, "The High House of Light VS Rosoku Sensei", 1 Apr 2010 - Q: I have some questions about that : I've seen this ruling about Intelligence Agence and Yodin Sensei : - If you are a Yodin Sensei player, you may target a Personality with the Intelligence Agent, but this does not allow you to target that Personality with other actions, because Intelligence Agent overrides card effects, while Yodin Sensei is considered printed on the stronghold. [VRD, 29 December 2000]
A: That ruling is outdated, as are most linked on L5Rsearch or in the Rules Archive. The Legacy Wiki is the most current and accurate source of such things, in almost all cases. But do consider this the official ruling/reversal: Senseis' text are no longer considered to be on your Stronghold.
And thus, for Intelligence Agent's current interaction with Yodin Sensei, yes it will allow a player of Yodin Sensei using its ability to target another player's Personality. Brook Cunningham, "Sensei & Stronghold VS Celestial Edition Rulebook", 19 Mar 2010 - Q: According to touch of ice (Touch of Ice Reads, "Touch of Ice 2G 3FV Water Open: If it is not your turn, bow this Shugenja: Another target player may choose to bow two of his Personalities. If he does not bow two Personalities, gain 3 Honor." [MRP, Celestial Edition, 29 June 2009]) can you target someone if they do not have two personalities to bow? According to the FAQ it is a legal action to play seeing how you can pay the cost for the spell and the effect will go off.
Thanks
A: Yes, you may target a player who doesn't have two Personalities he or she could bow. Brook Cunningham, "Touch of Ice", 14 Nov 2009 - Q: With Celestial Edition, new wordings have been applied to some cards. In this case, Insight. If a Ring shows up in the 3 cards, do I get to play it or not? I do not know if this still applies, so I asked for clarification.
A: No, you can no longer play Rings via Insight, due to its Most Recent Printing (or "MRP").

Cardinal Rule #2:
"Cards vs. cards: New versions of cards with a given title may sometimes be printed, and L5R is printed in several languages. If different printings contradict each other, follow the most recent English-language printing of the card." Brook Cunningham, "Insight, Rings and Strategies", 18 Oct 2009 - Q: Hello guys one question, Does anyone knows what the Legend of the Five Rings CCG Celestial Edition “15th Anniversary” boosters include? is it random stuff from the 15 years set? like is there a chance to get the Mempo's in there? or that can only be obtained with the original set? Also how does common, uncommon and rare work here? or everything is considered rare?
A: The Mempos are only available in the CE15 Clan starter decks.
I'm not totally sure, but I believe the packs have normal base set pack rarity, whatever that was exactly; CE15 was basically like a reprint of regular CE base set. However, the packs also include one of the special "CE15" reprint cards that were not CE legal (mostly) but celebrated the game by printing old cards' art and text with the current outer frame.
