Rules Q&A
- Q: Can a Test of Courage cancel a Torrential Rain? How about a Bridged Pass?
A: Reactions that respond to units leaving a battle cannot react if the units are moving because their battle ended prematurely. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 April 2003", 4 Apr 2003 - Q: I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but I'm just making sure. Do you need a personality or Garrison at a province to use an ability on one of your fortifications such as Bridged Pass or Edge of the Shinomen Forest?
A: There are no special rules on Fortifications or on Regions that make their Battle and Open actions immune to the Rule of Presence. You need a unit (or Garrison) there. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 August 2002", 6 Aug 2002 - Q: Player 1 (me): Shadowlands (The Spawning Ground) Player 2 :Crab Player 3:Crane
I recently played a multi- game and the following occured:
During my turn, I initiated an attack vs. the Crane provinces. My Stronghold, not containing any caveats for allying or asking to ally, allows me to ask the Crab for help in pulverizing the Crane.
Province 1: My entire army + Crab allying support gets sent home w/o bowing (Bridged Pass). Province 2: I play Accessible terrain (after the defender passes).
Q: Does the allying attacker gain the ability printed on Accessible Terrain?
A: No. He is an "attacking player" and an "attacking ally", but you and ONLY you are the "Attacker". "Attacker" and "Defender" are rigid terms. Normally, there is exactly one of each. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 January 2002", 12 Jan 2002 - Q: I always thought that if a personality went home from a battle unless it was stated otherwise (Entrapping Terrain, Flattery, Bridged Pass) he was bowed.
A: This was true *VERY* briefly. It hasn't been for almost a year. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 July 2001", 11 Jul 2001 - Q: I have seen it mentioned on this list several times that a player with Kaiu Sensei in play could blow a Bridged Pass at one province to stop an attack on another.
Remember that Kaiu Sensei only confers the *Traits* of fortifications during battle to other provinces. The ability to end a battle via Bridged Pass is an ability, and not a trait. Therefore to use Bridged Pass to end a battle, even with Kaiu Sensei, the Bridged Pass must be at the province being attacked. The same goes for Pitch and Fire.
A: Kaiu Sensei also lets you use abilities on your Fortifications as if they were in the battle being resolved. Using Bridged Pass to end a battle where it isn't is perfectly kosher if you're a Kaiu Sensei man. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 15th", 15 Nov 2000 - Q: So my opponent has Garrison and Bridged Pass at the province I'm attacking. He uses Bridged Pass - can I react with Det Force? The condition is still valid in spite of Garrison, yes?
A: Correct.
Incidentally, the answer would've been the same even under Garrison's old wording, too. But hey, that's what the Oracle is for; to make things clearer. Brook Cunningham, "Bridged Pass / Garrison vs. Determined Force", 29 Jun 2014 - Q: Hello guys. One question with Bridged pass. The card its pretty clear, but on the oracle, the wording can make things a little bit confusing. In oracle it says Battle: Destroy this Fortification to move all units at the current battlefield home. The current battle's Resolution Segment does not occur. If a personality cannot be move home, does the other player still have battle actions to play? or not anymore?
A: Hrm. Looks like I just messed that one up and didn't put the "end the battle" effect between the two other sentences. 😦
It's fixed now, along with a few others I noticed could use a touch-up to the same effect (Flattery, Torrential Rain, Hida's Guidance). Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 18 Jun 2024
