Rules Q&A
- Q: Question:
Why the Inexorable Defeat is not Absent Battle in the Oracle of the Void?
Broken Alliance is an Absent Battle in the Oracle of the Void but Broken Alliance and Inexorable Defeat have the same card text:
"If there are enemy units at the current battlefield, choose your performing personality: Move him there."
A: Keeping the Oracle's text current is an ongoing project. Obviously it has not gotten to Inexorable Defeat at this point.
In general, when playing in Legacy, Big Deck and Modern formats, the intent is for cards to work as they functioned when they were legal. Since Inexorable Defeat's Battle ability (but not its Battle/Open) was an Absent Battle at the time, please play as such. Jon Palmer, "Broken Alliance and Inexorable Defeat", 8 Dec 2014 - Q: Hi,
There is a debate among players from Paris... Can Kalani's Landing pay gold for Broken Alliance ability that destroys an attachment?
Card's texts: Bropken alliance : Battle/Open: Target an attachment and pay Gold equal to its Gold Cost minus two: Destroy it.
Kalani's landing : This card will not produce Gold when paying for an attachment.
Thanks in advance, Regards, Rémi.
A: Yes. Paying the cost to destroy the attachment via Broken Alliance is not paying "for" an attachment. Jon Palmer, "Broken alliance VS Kalani's Landing", 27 Mar 2012 - Q: Broken Alliance: "Battle/Open: Target an attachment and pay Gold equal to its Gold Cost minus two: Destroy it." Blade of Champions: "Reaction: When a Battle action would target a card in this unit, bow this card: The action targets another of your cards instead, if legal."
The rules question is obvious. If I use Broken Alliance during the Open phase to destroy Blade of Champions, is it considered a Battle action (due to "Battle" being printed on its ability), and thus can Blade of Champions redirect it?
A: Fortunately, the answer is also obvious:
Abilities and actions, Designators: "Abilities with two designators, such as “Open/Battle,” count as having both individual designators, but the action they generate has only one designator, according to when the action was taken."
A Battle/Open action taken during the Action Phase would not provide a valid trigger for Blade of Champions. Brook Cunningham, "Broken Alliance & Blade of Champions", 15 Mar 2012
