Rules Q&A
- Q: Regarding http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=114405
The ruling on A Champion's Strike isn't explicitly mentioned in this answer, so just to be clear, is this to say that the addition of targeting paradoxes to the CR reverses the original ruling?
The original poster had asked:
The ruling was that, no, you can't. Has this changed?
If so, great! If not, my original question stands as to what distinguishes Rewards of Experience from A Champion's Strike in terms of Hidden Dagger/targeting restrictions.
A: My ruling on Rewards of Experience was incorrect, and the ruling on A Champion's Strike was correct. Inconsistency resolved. Jon Palmer, "RE: Hidden Dagger Follow-up", 15 Jul 2015 - Q: Could you explain the distinction between the rulings made regarding Hidden Dagger as it interacts with Rewards of Experience http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=114402 and A Champion's Strike http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=109757 ?
Why is it that in the case of Rewards of Experience it "works" and in the case of A Champion's Strike it does not?
A: The targeting paradoxes section of the CR didn't exist at the time (so really, we had no way to guarantee that a card like No Hiding Place would ever work). Your targeting constraint at this point is that the force of the unit targeted by Rewards of Experience has to be less than yours; therefore, it's only a legal target when you use the Hidden Dagger. Jon Palmer, "Hidden Dagger Follow-Up", 6 Jul 2015 - Q: Hi,
If i have a Samurai personality in the battle, with a Hidden Dagger. Can i use a Rewards of Experience against a unit with higher force, and can i use the Hidden Dagger"s interrupt, that give -2 force before action resolves?
Rewards of Experience: http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=6308,#hashid=3b55f8ce1f8bb2e3153346af9f1cf2a1,#cardcount=0

Thanks a lot!
A: Yes, you may.
Normally you'd be prevented from selecting the unit you want to select. However, the Targeting Paradoxes section of the CR says that as long as you have an effect that will make it legal, it's okay to take the action; you're then compelled to use the Hidden Dagger's Interrupt (or another similar effect) to make the targeting legal. Jon Palmer, "Rewards of Experience and Hidden Dagger", 6 Jul 2015 - Q: Can you please explain this ruling: http://alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... r#p1438080
To be more precise, can you please explain the timing? From my point of view you have to target all targets simultaneously, rather than successivly, and all the targets have to be legal at this moment. And if you target successivly, what defines whether you count the force you have targeted or the force you have destroyed. I see nothing in the cards text nor in the CR, except the card saying you may target AND destory followers with force ....
A: Yes, you're actually correct, and I've reversed my answer regarding Champion's Strike for these very reasons. Simultaneous things complicate matters, and we do our best to avoid them when we can, including the fact that triggers to simultaneous things resolve sequentially, which was what got me thinking the combo WOULD work. But indeed, the targeting would all have to be legal and chosen before any of the -2Fs would go off, so it couldn't allow for successive new targets.
