Rules Q&A
- Q: In any game, a reference that depends on showing a card also includes “look” effects.
A: Therefore, Sachina Sensei is triggered by Way of the Scorpion. Thanks for asking! Roger Giner-Sorolla, "Way of the Scorpion and Sachina Sensei", 15 Feb 2015 - Q: Is attaching something considered playing the card?
A: Yes. Alex Jones, "Sachina Sensei and the meaning of play.", 2 Dec 2014 - Q: If my opponent reveals an attachment in my hand and I choose not to discard it, am I prevented from using copies of that attachment that are currently in play as well as the one specifically in my hand?
A: No.
As defined in the Comprehensive Rules, p58: Play: As a verb, "play" can refer to: putting into play a card type that normally enters play; ...
Putting an attachment into play is playing it; taking an action from it while it's in play is not. Alex Jones, "Sachina Sensei and the meaning of play.", 2 Dec 2014 - Q: So a friend of mine and I were playing today and he brought up that you need to use Sachina Sensei before your opponent reveals a card in his hand. Something to do with the timing of interrupts. I countered that by that logic then the wording on the sensei doesn't even work due to the fact it says "after an action shows a card in another player's hand..." Could I possibly get some clarification on if the rules of the game completely contradict the wording on the card? Thanks!
A: Nope, not under discussion, just some Real Life and Behind the Scenes duties causing some delays. Apologies!
Well, first off, you're not going to win any arguments with "the card doesn't even work". All the cards work, I promise. And your friend is right. All Interrupts to an action must be taken before any of its effects resolve (right at the "colon", if you will, for a physical landmark).
The reason the logic works in this case is that Sachina Sensei's Interrupt creates a delayed effect when its interrupt is taken at the appropriate time. No cards have been shown yet, but like any delayed effect, it waits until its trigger occurs. Then, when the effects of the action DO show cards in the hand, the effect triggers and Sachina Sensei's player may choose one and etc etc.
I hope that clarifies the timing of taking Interrupts. Always always right before effects. Brook Cunningham, "Sachina Sensei", 21 Sep 2014
