Rules Q&A
- Q: Just some clarifications. Since Sudden Movements Focus Effect gives the duel's winner +3F and Oneiyara says "After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser". So when I win a duel with Oneiyara with Sudden Movement focused, do I Fear 3 or Fear 6?
Does Spirited Dispute negate Oneiyara fear effect? Since Oneiyara's fear effect says "After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser" and not during the duels resolution.
A: The focus effect from Sudden Movement would be in effect at the time Oneiyara's Fear strength is determined, so you get a Fear 6.
There is no consequence for losing Oneiyara's duel, so Spirited Dispute will not prevent the Fear from resolving. Jon Palmer, "Oneiyara and duels", 17 Apr 2015 - Q: Which of the two following scenarios is the correct outcome for the interaction between these two cards?
Scenario A) I focus Spirited Dispute during the duel to negate the consequences of losing in exchange for losing the duel. My opponent then bows Aroru Sensei to give my personality a -1F/-1C token as a trigger to losing the duel as it is not itself, a consequence.
Scenario B) I focus Spirited Dispute during the duel to negate the consequences of losing in exchange for losing the duel. My opponent may not bow Aroru Sensei as Aroru Sensei's trigger is a consequence of losing the duel.
Thanks!
A: Aroru Sensei's ability is an Interrupt, which means it must be played during the Interrupt, long before any cards are focused. So B is closer, but the opponent would've had to make the decision before you focused anything. Jon Palmer, "Spirited Dispute and Aroru Sensei", 11 Mar 2015 - Q: Two more questions, both unrelated - First question, spirited dispute lets you invest (2) to resolve it's action twice. Does that change mean you resolve each of it's two modes, or resolve the same mode both times?
A: The latter. Brook Cunningham, "Onyx Lives #rules-questions", 20 Dec 2023 - Q: Is Spirited Dispute simply a way to negate a duel that you would lose?
A: Negate the effects of losing only, not the whole duel, but otherwise, yes. I suppose it is a bit redundant to "choose to lose" in a scenario where you'd proabably already be losing, or else you wouldn't choose that effect, but there's possibly some combo I'm not seeing where that's necessry. 😛 Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 3 Dec 2023
