Rules Q&A
- Q: I was told recently that due to the rules for Interrupt timing in the Comprehensive Rules, Tadanobu Sensei must bow after a duel is announced and targeting done, and prior to focus and duel resolution. However, I believe the action's timing stipulation and Cardinal Rule #1 both contradict this. Specifically, Tadanobu's Interrupt cannot be announced until its specified trigger "after you win the action's duel" is passed, because it is not known at the time of the action being announced whether or not the Tadanobu player will win. And, according to 0.0.9.1, the win has to actually happen for the trigger to pass. And if not that, Tadanobu's action specifies its own interrupt timing, which by Cardinal Rule #1 overrides the general rule for Interrupt timing. By my read, that would mean he bows and Interrupts after duel resolution. Which is correct?
Tadanobu Sensei: "Interrupt, : After you win the action's duel, draw a card."
Comprehensive Rules 0.0.9.1, Triggers: "Triggers worded using more definite language, about an actual occurrence rather than the general time point, do require that the occurrence actually happen."
Comprehensive Rules 0.0.1.1, Cardinal Rule #1: "Cards vs. rules: If the text of any card contradicts these Comprehensive Rules, follow the card text, not the rules."
Comprehensive Rules 0.0.7.3.5, Interrupts: "These actions are taken and resolve during a non-Interrupt action – either the Interrupt’s player’s or another player’s – at the point after the original action’s costs are paid and before its effects start to resolve."
... "Phrases in an Interrupt’s effects such as “After a Personality is destroyed” refer to the effects of the interrupted action, and are delayed until those effects occur; they do not refer to when the Interrupt is played."
A: Many Interrupts create delayed effects. Per the CR, "Phrases in an Interrupt’s effects such as “After a Personality is destroyed” refer to the effects of the interrupted action, and are delayed until those effects occur; they do not refer to when the Interrupt is played. "
The timing for when you take an Interrupt is always the same, and Cardinal Rule #1 is never going to change that unless the card specifically says "Announce this Interrupt after the resolution of an action" or some such. Tadanobu's Interrupt is used during the normal Interrupt window to create the delayed effect "draw a card", and "After you win the action's duel" is the trigger for the delayed effect. Jon Palmer, "Interrupt timing of Tadanobu Sensei", 8 Jun 2015 - Q: Tadanobu Sensei's trait prevents the Crane player from gaining Honor from Holdings. Does it also stop gains from the Temple Fortress' honor-gaining trait? It seems to me like it does, but I would like confirmation.
A: Yes, that is an honor gain from a holding.
If it was worded "from actions on holdings", Temple Fortress would work. Jon Palmer, "Tadanobu Sensei + Temple Fortress", 15 Feb 2015 - Q: When my opponent declines to challenge Kakita Amiki, it is not considered a refused challenge for triggering Tadanobu Sensei, correct?
A: Correct. Brook Cunningham, "Kakita Amiki + Tadanobu Sensei", 25 Sep 2014
