Rules Q&A
- Q: If I activate Second City Market, and utilize a Bookkeeper to pay some/all of the recruited Holding's cost, will Bookkeeper gain a token?
In other words, am I paying to recruit a Holding, or am I paying to activate an action?
A: You will gain a token.
You are using an action that is Recruiting (bringing into play) a Holding card.
The Rulebook Recruit action works the same way, in that Bookkeeper checks to see what the action is going to try to do. Ben Higgins, "Bookkeeper + Second City Market", 2 Dec 2014 - Q: If I invest Ide Kosaka and I am paying with a Bookkeeper, does my Bookkeeper get a wealth token after her holding is brought into play?
A: No. When Bookkeeper is making its payment, you're still bringing a Personality into play, not a holding. Jon Palmer, "Bookkeeper + Ide Kosaka", 24 Sep 2014 - Q: Can 2 copies of Bookkeeper, each with two +1g production wealth tokens bow and pool gold to pay for a two gold cost holding to trigger both of their traits to add one more +1g production wealth token each?
A: The short answer is, if you have at least one Holding to Recruit in your Provinces, you can bow any number of Bookkeepers you have in play when paying for THAT Recruit action for THAT Holding. As long as the Recruit action they were bowed during Recruits a Holding, they will all get tokens for you doing this, no matter how much of the Gold they produced is actually SPENT on Recruiting the Holding, or how much is left over for later payments that phase. Brook Cunningham, "Double Bookkeeper Payment for Holding", 17 Jun 2014 - Q: Have Bookkeeper with 1 Wealth token. I bow it to produce 2G then i buy two Abundant Farmlands (1GC). How many Wealth tokens my Bookkeeper gain? One or two?
A: Just one token.
Even though leftover Gold can now be spent on future costs, the initial bowing of the Holding is only in response to the first of the two Recruit actions you would need to take to buy two Abundant Farmlands. And the token-giving part of the Gold-producing trait only checks/triggers based on what the triggering Recruit action is paying for, not further such actions.
In fact, should you bow the Bookkeeper while paying for a Recruit action, then Recruit a Personality with that action, you would get zero tokens, even if you later use leftover Gold (some or all of it from Bookkeeper) from that Recruiting to Recruit a Holding. Brook Cunningham, "Bookkeeper", 7 Jun 2014 - Q: Relating in some part to this question which is still under discussion.
Is the effect from Bookkeeper instantaneous or continuous?
If instantaneous, assuming it occurs immediately after you have bowed the holding to pay for the recruit action, how does it know you are buying a holding?
If continuous, assuming that the action refers to a future event of you buying a holding in, as the effect has no duration or limit does it count for all future holdings you buy in this turn?
Thanks
[Edit: Added the text of bookkeeper for convenience]
A: It's a triggered trait, that gives the token if you use the 1G to Recruit a Holding.
We were in the process of revising our wording of these kinds of effects when Bookkeeper went to print, and players will see a better marriage of intuitive and technical wording going forward. Brook Cunningham, "Bookkeeper + the Recruit Action", 4 Jun 2014
