Rules Q&A
- Q: C. Opposing for action made by players
My opponent attack my last Province with Hida Tonoji with an attached Spearmen. I defend with two Personalities. I have a unbowed Toshiji at home. I play Brutal Confrontation.
Question C: Can I bow Toshiji to perform a Ranged 3 Attack against the Spearmen? 5. Yes. You have presence, meet relevance, cost could be paid, and the ranged attack targets a card opposed by your army at the current battle. 6. No. The performing Personality must be at the current battle and opposing the card you have targeted
A: The answer is again, "6," for the same reasons as outlined above. The ability is not on a card in an army and references the Personality who pays the cost as the point for determining "opposing." Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 January 2005", 24 Jan 2005 - Q: Just thought I'd point out that if you're playing out of Kyuden Doji, you could make Chiyeko a courtier, so then it would act like a second, better Brutal Confrontation.
Does this work?
A: Yes, assuming Chieko is targeting herself to be the challenger. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 December 2004", 15 Dec 2004 - Q: The Shadowlands player drops Brutal Confrontation. He then attempts to bow Voitagi to have Iuchiban issue an unrefusable challenge. The Unicorn player says that the bowing Personality is the one doing the challenge. The disagreement gets a judge to come over and it was ruled that the bowing Personality issues the challenge by implication. The Shadowlands player is asking for clarification:
A: The ability in question, granted by Brutal Confrontation reads, "Battle: Bow one of your Personalities to challenge an opposing Personality to an unrefusable duel of Force or Chi."
Only one Personality is specified under the ability. The ability does not reference any of your other Personalities, so that Personality has to be the one doing the challenging and the cost payment. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 October 2004", 11 Oct 2004 - Q: I have a really simple question about the interaction between The Same Old Tricks and Brutal Confrontation : can the former cancel the latter if its action is used more than once ? I would assume it can't, but I just want to be sure.
A: If you manage to dig Brutal Confrontation out of your Discard Pile and play it again in the same turn, sure, you can cancel its Battle Action.
However, the Same Old Tricks won't avail you at all against the Battle Actions that Brutal Confrontation gives to Players. Those are not abilities considered to be played off of the Brutal Confrontation card.
They sort of just hang out in the etherium as a game rule modification with a certain duration, sort of like picking up a Star Man in Super Mario Brothers. :) Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 October 2004", 4 Oct 2004 - Q: Say I Sneak Attack, play Lotus at Dusk, then Brutal Confrontation. Does Lotus at Dusk prevent me from using the trait on Brutal Confrontation to take a free action on Brutal Confrontation, or can I use an action on Brutal Confrontation for free and follow up with the second action with Lotus at Dusk?
A: Brutal Confrontation doesn't have any such trait. It has one ability, "Battle: All players may take the following actions for the rest of the battle. You may take one such action immediately if your army has at least two units ..."
That's all part of the Action. It is an additional Action from an Action, something that Lotus at Dusk specifically prevents.
Playing Brutal Confrontation under Lotus at Dusk can't yield you an extra Action from Brutal Confrontation. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 August 2004", 2 Sep 2004 - Q: Ik K.Ch is in battle bowed after Brutal Confrontation and opponet played on her Freezing lifeblood, may she unbow and make more duels ? yes ? no ? why ?
A: No. Again, if you can see that her trait won't successfully unbow her, then the Action isn't going to be a legal play in the first place. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 May 2004", 19 May 2004 - Q: Good day! I would like to ask a question regarding Brutal Confrontation & O-Ushi Sensei. Say I'm playing O-ushi Sensei & I play Brutal Confrontation. When my opponent decides to use Brutal Confrontation to issue a duel of Chi, can I use my personality's Force instead?
Thanks!
A: You may use your Personality's force, as described under Duel Stat: If more than one effect changes which stat is used in a duel, first apply effects from the action or trait that created the duel, then apply effects from other sources, which override the stats specified in the duel. Alex Jones, "Legacy Question: O-ushi Sensei & Brutal Confontation", 2 Nov 2011 - Q: I apologise with regards to the 3rd question of the last post I made at this forum. Someone has kindly pointed out to me that there has already been a ruling archived that Terrains only affect cards in their battle.
One important question that I had forgotten to ask however was the interaction between other Formations?
Example:
Endless Horde
Center Formation Formed by a Personality with a Follower and a Samurai or Bushi Personality with a Follower. Battle: Bow one of your non-token Followers to destroy an opposing Follower, Item or Personality with no Followers or Items.
I have attacking units in Province A and B. There are defending units in Province A and B. I resolve Province A first and successfully 'form' the formation Endless Horde. May I bow one of my non-token Followers in Province B to destroy an opposing Follower, Item or Personality with no Followers or Items in Province B.
Likewise, does the rule apply to other Formations?
Also, how does this rule interact with non-Formation action cards such as Brutal Confrontation? Can I bow one of my personalities in another Province to issue a duel to a personality opposing him in that Province?
Thank you for your time and attention.
A: Endless Horde has the same sort of interaction as the second Ability on Rain of Death. You can form it in the Current Battle and employ the Battle Action with Non-Token Followers in another Battle against targets at that battle.
Brutal Confrontation, on the other hand, is not a card at the Battlefield. It is an Action Card that is played, then goes to the Discard Pile. It gives players a series of Actions to use for the rest of the battle. However, those Actions are not printed on a card at the battle, thusly they can not use that criteria to meet the Rule of Relevance.
So their targets, typically, must be at the Current Battle to have the Action be Relevant, much like Tsuruchi Technique or Arrows from the Woods. A: It can be used against the actions granted by the card to the players (which target), but they can be taken again, but not against the initial playing of the card.
