Rules Q&A
- Q: The new rules in 20 festivals day:
Equip #
Repeatable Open, Gold star 20: Attach a target attachment card, with Gold Cost equal to the amount you paid, from your hand to your target Personality. Sometimes “Equip” is used as an effect in card text. This means that the effects of the Equip action are activated, and the card’s Gold Cost is checked against the amount paid for the original action. If the original action did not give the opportunity to pay Gold, then before the card is attached, its Gold Cost must be paid or the attachment fails. The original action may modify any of the rules of the Equip procedure; for example, it may Equip a card “ignoring cost.” Effects that merely “attach” a card do not invoke the Equip procedure or action.
Targeting # Targeting is a special kind of choice that involves designating one or more cards or other game entities (such as a Province or player). Targets are chosen at an early step of the Action Sequence, and targeting is carried out based on these choices, with any intervening changes, in the actions’ resolution step. The word “target” must appear for the procedure to be considered targeting — just “choosing” something is not targeting
Temple of serenity: Battle, , w: Equip a Spell to your target opposed Shugenja for 2 less Gold. Gain 1 Honor, or 2 Honor if the target is defending.
If do not invoke equip procedure, an not appear the Word TARGET in the action. Can i play this battle if i dont have a spell in my hand and gain 2 honor with my defending shugenja?
Thanks
A: As of Twenty Festivals, all abilities that say to Equip an attachment target the attachment. Alex Jones, "Temple of Serenity", 9 Mar 2015 - Q: Does temple of serenity now require you to have a spell in hand/equip it successfully?
A: Yes. Temple of Serenity now targets the Spell to be Equipped, so the Good Faith Rule requires you to have a Spell in hand which you can pay for and attach to the Shugenja you (will) target. Alex Jones, "Temple of Serenity and new equip rules", 9 Mar 2015 - Q: Further to http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=109251&hilit=temple+of+serenity Can I use temple of Serenity if I have a Shugenja at a battle field who is unopposed to just gain the honor? If yes, can I also use it if I have a samurai at the battle (no shugenja) to gain honor?
A: No, you cannot do either of those things.
An "opposed Shugenja" of yours is required targeting of the action. If you can't meet an action's required targeting, you can't take it. Brook Cunningham, "Temple of Serenity unopposed", 12 Oct 2014 - Q: I announce the battle action on Temple of Serenity, I don't have a spell in my hand so the equip fail, but I still get honor.
Is the above play legal? What happens if I do have a spell but for some reason I don't want to use it right now, can I decide not to equip anything?
Thanks!
A: Equipping does not target the attachment, so you may announce Temple of Serenity's action and gain 2 honour without attaching a spell. Alex Jones, "Temple of Serenity without spells", 3 Aug 2014 - Q: another question again for LoR but for Modern. If I'm attaching an spell using temple of serenity or elemental library? Would LoR produce 4 gold with the reaction? Or not because its an action?
A: Paying for an action that Equips a thing is the same as paying for the thing.
You'll note that the Rules Forum question (that actually had an answer) that Kempy posted above noted that the distinction was merging post CoM. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 15 Oct 2024
