Rules Q&A
- Q: I use Kaiu Akemi's ability to make my opponent show a random card and the card he shows has focus value 4. Am I allowed to actually use the discard ability at that point if the highest card I have is a 4 FV? Voice of Experience appears to pump a card up once I discard it, but Kaiu Akemi's ability seems to imply that I can't discard it unless it's higher in the first place.
Kaiu Akemi: Battle: If Akemi is opposed, show a random card in the enemy leader's hand. You may discard a card with a higher Focus Value (from your hand) to discard the shown card.
Voice of Experience: Interrupt: After each time the action discards or shows any cards, you may give them +1FV. (Focused cards cannot gain this bonus.)
Thanks,
A: You cannot discard a 4FV card to discard you opponent's 4FV card, as your card would only get the FV bonus after you discard it, but the FV comparison is done before the discard. Alex Jones, "Kaiu Akemi plus Voice of Experience timing?", 17 Jul 2015 - Q: To be perfectly clear, today's latest statement is an official reversal of this prior statement ?
A: Yes, my original ruling for #8 was incorrect, and to quote RGS in Alex's signature, "Alex is exactly right". Jon Palmer, "Seppun Tasuke, Discarding, and Voice of Experience", 21 Apr 2015 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=110853
Current Oracle text for Seppun Tasuke is: "Name a number and target another player. After each time his (non-Focused) card with that Focus Value is discarded from hand, gain an Affection token."
Does it matter which player's hand the card was discarded from?
For example, I use Doji Takato and end up with my opponent's card in my hand. I discard it later (say, for the Favor ability). His (my opponent) card is being discarded "from hand". Would I get a token?
A: You would get a token - it doesn't matter whose hand the card is discarded from, as long as it's a card your opponent owns. Alex Jones, "Seppun Tasuke, Discarding, and Voice of Experience", 21 Apr 2015 - Q: Hello. I am trying to create Love Letter Deck, and there are some things unclear to me...
Situation A) : I am using Seppun Tasuke ability, naming "3". Then during battle I use Kaiu Akemi's ability and use Voice of Experience' intterupt. Opponent shows a card with printed FV of 2, I add extra +1FV (from VoE) to it, and discard my card with 4FV to discard his card. Question - do I get the affection token from sensei, for opponent discarding a "3" FV card? Sensei does not precise at what point of time the FV is checked, and FV manipulation is made during the course of discard.
Situation B) : I am using Seppun Tasuke ability, naming "3". Then during battle I use Kaiu Akemi's ability anduse Voice of Experience' intterupt. Opponent shows a card with printed FV of 2. I discard a 3FV < card to discard his card. Now, as his card is discarded, chose to increase his FV by 1 due to VoE effect. Question - may I do so? VoE can be used on both showing OR discarding...
Situation C) : I am using Seppun Tasuke ability, naming "3". Then during battle I use Kaiu Akemi's ability and use Voice of Experience' intterupt. My opponent uses his Voice of Experience as well. Opponent shows a card with printed FV of 2, and then increases it to 3 due to his VoE effect. I discard a 3FV card from my hand and use mine VoE on it to discard his card. Question - may I do so? At the point of discarding my card mine has not enough value to discard opponents card, but I have means and intention to make it so...
Bonus question (just occured to me) : Kaiu Akemi shows a card in other player's hand. Then, as a _separate_ effect, it is possible to discard it. Because card loses all "memory" of all effects affecting it if it is out of play and face-down, wouldn't the VoE effect used on "showing" the card wear off when the discarding effect is about to resolve?
Voice of Experience Interrupt: After each time the action discards or shows any cards, you may give them +1FV.
Seppun Tasuke Open, #BOW: Name a number and target another player. After each time his (non-Focused) card with that Focus Value is discarded, gain an Affection token.
Kaiu Akemi, the Diplomat Battle: If Akemi is opposed, show a random card in the enemy leader's hand. You may discard a card with a higher Focus Value (from your hand) to discard the shown card.
A: In all of these cases, the timing is the same, so the active player chooses which among Tasuke, Akemi, and VoE's effects apply first. As long as you're the active player, you can resolve them in the order that it will work as you wish. If you're not the active player (and this applies when the opponent has a VoE, or if it's not your turn) your effects will not resolve in the order you wish them to resolve. Jon Palmer, "Seppun Tasuke, Voice of Experience, Kaiu Akemi", 20 Apr 2015 - Q: Voice of Experience:
Interrupt: After each time the action discards or shows any cards, you may give them +1FV. (Focused cards cannot gain this bonus.)
Kaiu Akemi, the Diplomat Battle: If Akemi is opposed, show a random card in the enemy leader's hand. You may discard a card with a higher Focus Value (from your hand) to discard the shown card.
I annouce Kaiu Akemi, then interrupt with voice of experience, my opponent shows me a 3 FV. At this point i want to discard a path of wisdom ( 3 FV ) wanting to use the Voice of experience interrupt to increase it to a 4 FV, but will that also increase my opponents cards FV as well since voice of experience last line refers to 'them'?
A: You make the choice "each time" cards are discarded or shown. If cards are discarded or shown simultaneously you make one choice for all cards in the group, and they all gain or do not gain the bonus. Your choice for one group of cards does not affect your options for other groups of cards. Alex Jones, "voice of experiance", 20 Apr 2015 - Q: 0) While I think I understand why the text of Mark of Heaven's Favor specifies "positive numeral", I am unsure about what that means. I would understand "positive integer" or "positive number" but it would appear a "numeral" can not be positive or negative. "-5" is not a numeral, for example, but it is written using the numeral "5".
1) In the context of L5R rules, is "0" a positive or negative numeral?
2) What happens if Mark of Heaven's Favor is used to increase one of the instances of "4" appearing on the Obsidian Dojo (20F)? Will the Fear 5 affect only targets with 4F or less, or will the Fear 4 affect targets with 5F or less?
2bis) What happens if Mark of Heaven's Favor is used to increase an instance of "2" appearing in the description of the Kharmic ability appearing on, say, Voice of Experience (TCS)? Is the GC increase to 3 affecting both players or only the owner of the Marked Holding?
A: 0. On L5R cards, "numeral" is used as a shorthand for "number written with numerals".
1. 0 is neither positive nor negative.
2. There is only one 4 on Obsidian Dojo that can be affected by Mark of Heaven's Favor. Reminder text does not affect play.
2b. As above, numbers in reminder text are not affected by Mark of Heaven's Favor. Alex Jones, "Mark of Heaven's Favor", 12 Mar 2015 - Q: Due to resent discussion about the discarding... Can I use Voice of Experience to increase FV of card discarded by Delicate Gamble?
Delicate Gamble Political Limited: Bow your target unbowed Courtier. Discard the top card of another player's Fate deck. A target player gains or loses Honor equal to the discarded card's Focus Value or 3, whichever is lower. If he lost Honor, he ignores Honor Requirements this game.
Voice of Experience Interrupt: After each time the action discards or shows any cards, you may give them +1FV.
A: No, you may not. As noted elsewhere, Voice of Experience only alters the focus value of cards discarded from hand. Jon Palmer, "Voice of Experience, Delicate Gamble", 5 Jan 2015 - Q: In follow-up to

I understand the ruling on Voice of Experience. It is the result of the Card Memory Rule.
Based on this, how would the card ever be removed from the game? The remove from game is an ongoing effect specific to that card that was focused. When it is focused it goes face-down and out of play and by the Memory Rule the "remove if from game after the focused cards are discarded" effect is forgotten. Say I focused one from my hand and one from the discard pile. How does the game know which one to remove from the game?
A: Focusing Heirloom Tanto from the discard sets up a delayed effect that removes it from the game. That effect still resolves when its trigger occurs, and the Tanto will be removed.
If you focus one from hand and one from the discard, just choose one to remove, assuming neither has any additional effects on it that would distinguish it. Jon Palmer, "Re: Heirloom Tanto", 27 Oct 2014 - Q: If I have used Voice of Experience to increase the focus value of Heirloom Tanto, by discarding it to the phoenix stronghold for example. Does it focus for a 4 or 5? Does it get focused face-down or face-up.
A: Cards are focused face down and focused cards are out of play, so if you focus it from the discard pile, it would lose its bonus from Voice of Experience. Jon Palmer, "Heirloom Tanto + Voice of Experience", 24 Sep 2014 - Q: When i interrupt FoT with VoE i must decide to increase Focus Value before discarding a card?
A: You must decide whether or not to use the Interrupt from Voice of Experience in the Play Interrupts step, which is before you discard the card in the Resolve Effects step. However, Voice of Experience says, "you may give them +1FV", so you decide whether to apply the effect once you've seen the card. Alex Jones, "Fires of Turmoil + Voice of Experience", 5 Aug 2014
