Rules Q&A
- Q: Oneiyara has not won a duel this turn yet. Can I Interrupt Oneiyara's Battle action with Personal Dojo when I'm in the middle of using his Battle action? What will the result be?
Oneiyara Iaijutsu Battle: Oneiyara challenges a target enemy Personality. After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser.
Personal Dojo Tireless Interrupt: If you have won a duel this turn, each of the action's Fear effects have +1 strength and may target Items and Spells.
A: According to the Good Faith Rule: To legally announce an action, a player must be able to: 3. meet the conditions of any phrase beginning with “If” that starts the action’s effects (such as “If you are the Attacker, …”).
If you have not yet won a duel this turn, you may not announce Personal Dojo's action; if you have won a duel this turn, you may announce the action. It does not matter whether or not Oneiyara has won a duel yet this turn. Alex Jones, "Oneiyara + Personal Dojo", 21 Jul 2015 - Q: Iaijutsu Battle: Oneiyara challenges a target enemy Personality. After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser.
If you wanted to react with Okura Released to Oneiyara's Fear effect, you would have to play the interrupt after the battle action was declared targets were chosen and before the duel?
If so and you lost your own Okura is released would cause your Oneiyara to be destroyed correct?
Also Oneiyara's Force in the above is a self referenstial statement so If I steal the ability with Kenaro xp from Inspired Leadership it would refer to Kenaro's force?
Timing wise would Kenaro gain the +1f for winning the duel from his trait before the fear effect occurred?
Pretty sure I know most of these just double checking
A: All answers are yes. Jon Palmer, "Oneiyara - timing", 4 May 2015 - Q: Just some clarifications. Since Sudden Movements Focus Effect gives the duel's winner +3F and Oneiyara says "After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser". So when I win a duel with Oneiyara with Sudden Movement focused, do I Fear 3 or Fear 6?
Does Spirited Dispute negate Oneiyara fear effect? Since Oneiyara's fear effect says "After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser" and not during the duels resolution.
A: The focus effect from Sudden Movement would be in effect at the time Oneiyara's Fear strength is determined, so you get a Fear 6.
There is no consequence for losing Oneiyara's duel, so Spirited Dispute will not prevent the Fear from resolving. Jon Palmer, "Oneiyara and duels", 17 Apr 2015 - Q: Can you please explain this ruling: http://alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... r#p1438080
To be more precise, can you please explain the timing? From my point of view you have to target all targets simultaneously, rather than successivly, and all the targets have to be legal at this moment. And if you target successivly, what defines whether you count the force you have targeted or the force you have destroyed. I see nothing in the cards text nor in the CR, except the card saying you may target AND destory followers with force ....
A: Yes, you're actually correct, and I've reversed my answer regarding Champion's Strike for these very reasons. Simultaneous things complicate matters, and we do our best to avoid them when we can, including the fact that triggers to simultaneous things resolve sequentially, which was what got me thinking the combo WOULD work. But indeed, the targeting would all have to be legal and chosen before any of the -2Fs would go off, so it couldn't allow for successive new targets. Brook Cunningham, "Hidden Dagger + Champion's Strike/Oneiyara", 21 Sep 2014 - Q: Lets say I have a 3 Force Unique Samurai and my enemy has fifteen 2 force followers in play. Can I announce Champions Strike, interrupt with Hidden Dagger, and destroy them all?
A: EDIT: Well, no, not this after all. See two posts down. But the Oneiyara answer is still correct. Brook Cunningham, "Hidden Dagger + Champion's Strike/Oneiyara", 25 Aug 2014 - Q: Likewise, can I announce Oneiyara and interrupt with Hidden Dagger to give someone -4F before Oneiyara's fear goes off (provided he wins?) (-2F for duels targeting, and -2F for the fear targeting.)
A: Again, yes you may!
Look out for Hidden Daggers, everyone. They'll get you with their COMBOS! Brook Cunningham, "Hidden Dagger + Champion's Strike/Oneiyara", 25 Aug 2014 - Q: Following this topic : http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108336&p=1427032&hilit=Oneiyara#p1427032
1/ What is the reason why "any attempt to combine this Fear with another Fear effect will fail"? Do you mean that it will be illegal to Interrupt with them because of the Good Faith Rule?
According to Combining rules (CR, p 45-46) the falling of the combined effect as a consequence of a target becoming illegal for this effect is not stated. There is only the obligation of a target which is legal for all combined attack effects :
2/ So what about theses situations, if Oneiyara's Battle is combined with other Fear effects?
Example 1 : You use a Oneiyara's duel action as a Battle action, and Interrupt with Tested Blade (attached to Oneiyara)'s : - if you win, the Oneiyara's duel action Fear effect will be increased by Oneiyara's chi - if you lose, ... Tested Blade's Fear effect is combined with Oneiyara's duel action Fear effect, but it can only target an "enemy Follower or Personality".
Example 2 : You use a Oneiyara's duel action as a Battle action [no Follower attached anywhere], and Interrupt with Reinforced Parangu (attached to Oneiyara)'s : - if you win, the Oneiyara's duel action Fear effect will be increased by Reinforced Parangu's Fear 2. - if you lose, ... Reinforced Parangu's Fear effect is combined with Oneiyara's duel action Fear effect, but it can only target an "enemy Follower, or Personality without Followers".
Example 3 : Same of 2, but this time Oneiyara has an attached Follower.
According to the above quoted part of CR, it seems to me that if Oneiyara lose the duel, he would still not be a legal target for his own Fear effect in any of these situations, because the target has to be legally a legal target for the combined Fear effect, and that Oneiyara is not an "enemy" personality.
Thank you for clarifications.
***************
[Tested Blade] Battle, w: Fear equal to this Personality's Chi that may target a Personality with Followers (Bow a target enemy Follower or Personality with Force equal to or lower than the Fear's strength).
[Reinforced Parangu] Battle: Fear 2 (Bow a target enemy Follower, or Personality without Followers, with 2 or lower Force).
A: 1. The effects will fail because in general, the effect you are attempting to combine with (Tested Blade) cannot target Oneiyara. Therefore, he will only be hit by the strength of his Fear effect, which can target him specifically.
2. Example 1 - if you win, the Fear will be combined with Tested Blade and may only target an enemy Personality. If you lose, the Fear may only target Oneiyara, so the combining will fail and only the duel action's Fear will hit Oneiyara.
Example 2 - Same. If you win, combine as normal; if you lose, do not combine when you target Oneiyara.
Example 3 - Whether you win or lose, the combining of the Fear effect will fail as the Personality is not a legal target for the combining effect. Jon Palmer, "Oneiyara vs personalities with followers", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: What happens if the duel that is created by Oneiyara results in a tie, and both personalities are duelists? As Duelists only win ties when facing other Duelists, both personalities would lose. Do both get a fear with strength equal to Oneiyara's force, or only one because the wording is singular (If so, who decides who the fear goes to), or does it fizzle as there are more than one loser?
Oneiyara: Iaijutsu Battle: Oneiyara challenges a target enemy Personality. After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser.
A: Both players suffer the consequences of losing in a tie, so both Oneiyara and his opponent would both be targeted by the Fear effect. Jon Palmer, "Oneiyara and Ties", 25 Jun 2014 - Q: What exactly does Ascendance copy when you play it? It says fear effect that is a copy of a fear effect in your army, so does it pick up qualities like targeting through followers a la Tested Blade?
If so, what would happen if you tried to copy Oneiyara's fear? Would you end up with a fear equal to his force that can only target the loser, and as such not be able to target anything with it? Or does something else entirely happen?
A: Ascendence would copy all effects and restrictions of the Fear. So copying Tested Blade would produce Fear equal to the Personality's chi that goes through followers, and copying Oneiyara would produce a Fear effect that could only target the duel's loser - and Ascendance doesn't produce a duel, so there would be no legal targets. Jon Palmer, "Ascendance (also more Oneiyara...yay)", 19 Jun 2014 - Q: http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=11777,#hashid=61281cdca3c94a442a06b110a6741e0d,#cardcount=0
This guy is lacking the Samurai keyword. Ronin *by definition* are samurai. This is frustrating as it makes Colonial dojo not work and ruins the gold scheme of potential non-Dragon Kensai decks. Can we get a technical ruling that Ronin are Samurai?
Ronin: (in feudal Japan) a wandering samurai who had no lord or master. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ronin?s=t http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rōnin
A: Technically, in Rokugan, all Shugenja are also of the Samurai caste.
Unfortunately, the card game is never a 100% perfect reflection of the setting, and this is another of those times. Brook Cunningham, "Oneiyara", 4 Jun 2014 - Q: Oneiyara's battle action is used to challenge an enemy personality that has a follower attached. Oneiyara wins. Can the resulting Fear effect target the losing personality?
Oneiyara Iaijutsu Battle: Oneiyara challenges a target enemy Personality. After the duel, Fear equal to Oneiyara's Force that targets the loser.
A: After much discussion, the issue has been resolved thus:
According to the Comprehensive Rules, "Fear X" means "Target an enemy Follower or Personality without Followers and bow it if its Force is equal to or lower than X." However, Oneiyara's action exactly specifies the target, with no choice, so "Fear X targeting the loser" means, "Target the loser and bow it if its Force is equal to or lower than X."
That is, the whole clause "[your choice of] an enemy Follower or Personality without Followers" is replaced by "the loser".
Thus, any attempt to combine this Fear with another Fear effect will fail unless that Fear can also target the loser. For example, if you use a Tested Blade (attached to Oneiyara)'s action as a Battle action, Interrupt with Oneiyara's duel and win, the Tested Blade's Fear effect will be increased by Oneiyara's force; if you lose, the Fear effect will not be increased. Alex Jones, "Oneiyara vs personalities with followers", 2 Jun 2014 - Q: Thank you for the clarification. I didnt use it back in the day because I thought it couldn't bypass the unit but I also must have misread it. I'm rebuilding my dueling deck now and have it slotted under the context above. Suppose it's similar to Oneiyara.
A: No, I think you still may be misunderstanding? It is not like Oneiyara; it doesn't "bypass the unit", and I thought I made that clear, sorry. Oneiyara's Fear creates a new/special targeting that targets the loser regardless of whether that Personality has Followers or not; it specifically says it targets the loser, instead of Fear's normal targeting of "an enemy Follower or Personality without Followers". However, Strike of the Obisidian Blade does not do that; it will not allow your additional action to target the loser if he's not a normally legal target for the action. The additional action must be legal and normal in all ways, except it also adds the restriction that it may ONLY target the loser, not anyone/anything else.
