Rules Q&A
- Q: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic. ... &p=1427240
Every thread since this has categorically stated that reminder text has NO influence on rules.
I can't find any update in the CR that confirm Ben's ruling (but I may be missing it).
Assuming I haven't missed anything in the comp rules that confirms Ben's ruling, what do I pay when I buy a 5G personality with Cav Escort's battle action?
A: No, you do not. Cavalry Escort (may it rest in peace) uses the term "attach" to specify that it does not go through the standard Equip procedure. If you use Cavalry Escort to bring a 5G Personality into play, you will pay 10G (or bow a School of Wizardry or a Colonial Dojo, if you want to be cheesy about it). Jon Palmer, "Do I pay 3G extra for Cavalry Escort?", 24 Sep 2014 - Q: This is a followup of these 3 threads (one of which remains unanswered):
http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic. ... &p=1427240 : On whether you pay the 3G for Cavalry Escort Equipping. Rules team says you don't pay the 3G.

viewtopic.php?f=59&t=109310 : Reminder text has no bearing on rules
I feel like these are all encompassed by the same area of ruling that seems at best to contradict answers, and at worst to not even exist in the comp rules.
I was hoping we could get some form of clarification, and pointed to the correct part in the Comp Rules that evidences certain rulings rather than some of the current trend of "Shut up you're wrong". Thanks.
A: A lot of reminder text is placed on cards to help players know how a card's effects interact with the CR.
Recently we have had a few instances of reminder text that the Rules Team thought clarified the interactions, but seemed to only muddy them for the general playerbase.
As a rule, Reminder Text should be ignored when comparing the card text to the CR. Ben Higgins, "Reminder Text or Rules Text", 5 Aug 2014 - Q: In regards to this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108887
Since one would use Colonial Dojo well after the costs for Cavalry Escort must be paid, does that mean one cannot use Colonial Dojo to pay for the personality being recruited with Cavalry Escort?
~Andrew
A: Correction, Colonial Dojo (like School of Wizardry) has a trigger which states when it must be bowed, "When paying for a ...". Thus, these Holdings are bowed during the Pay Costs step of a Recruit action, including Cavalry Escort's Recruit action.
If you bow a Colonial Dojo while paying for a Recruit action, you must then choose a non-Unique Samurai; if you bow a School of Wizardry, you must then choose a Human Shugenja. Alex Jones, "Cavalry Escort", 4 Aug 2014 - Q: In response to this.
That was my point, that there shouldn't be an opportunity to produce gold after the initial cost step. Daidoji Ryushi's response (and my understanding of the rules) conflicts with Palmer's response to the original question. He said "you produce the gold during Cavalry Escort's Recruit effect", which is very different to producing gold etc during the cost step of the Cavalry Escort's ability. I was trying to show that Palmer's response creates a second opportunity to pay for the recruit where none should exist. I tried to give an example of how this could create an overly-powerful and unintended loophole.
A: Jon's response earlier is indeed misleading. You must pay the cost, and produce the gold, during the "Pay Costs" step of the action, not during the "Action's Resolution" step.
However, if you use Colonial Dojo to reduce to zero the cost of the Personality being Recruited, this is done during the "Action's Resolution" step. Alex Jones, "Cavalry Escort", 3 Aug 2014 - Q: Sometimes, as with Equip (p. 36), “Recruit” is used as an effect in card text. This means that the effects of the Recruit action are activated, and the card’s Gold Cost is checked against the amount paid for the original action. If the original action did not give the opportunity to pay Gold, then before the card enters play, its Gold Cost must be paid or the entering play fails. The original action may modify any of the rules of the Recruit procedure; for example, it may ask you to Recuit a card “from the discard pile.”
A: I have bolded the relevant text for emphasis. When the card effect goes to Recruit the Personality, there is not another window to produce Gold, as Calvary Escort did previously indeed give you an opportunity to pay gold for it's Recruit effect in it's *GC icon as part of it's Battle ability. Ben Higgins, "Cavalry Escort", 29 Jul 2014 - Q: In step E of the steps taken to play a card it states:
"Finally, if the player took the action from a Strategy card in hand, he or she discards it unless it is now in play."
(Emphasis mine) It doesn't say Fate card in hand but Strategy card. Cavalry Escort is not a Strategy card so as the rules are currently written it doesn't get discarded if the effect fails.
A: The comprehensive rules have been updated to include the discarding of non-Strategy cards in this scenario. Jon Palmer, "Cavalry Escort + Shadowed Estate", 20 Jul 2014 - Q: If I have Ring of Earth in play and want to use Cavalry Escort to recruit Jikoji, Fist of Stone, how much gold do I pay?
A: You ignore his gold cost, which per Cavalry Escort is his normal cost plus five. So zero gold. Jon Palmer, "Cavalry Escort and "ignoring Gold Cost"", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: If I announce Cavalry Escort, and produce an insufficient amount of gold, can I additionally produce gold during the action's recruit effect? If no, how can I use a Colonial Dojo to pay for the action?
I see cavalry escort as being different from a lot of actions with variable gold cost, as it doesn't reference the amount paid in any way (as Deliberations does, for example), and it creates an effect that normally allows you to produce gold.
Thanks
A: I'm unsure of exactly where you're going with this question, but you produce the gold during Cavalry Escort's Recruit effect. This would also be when you would use Colonial Dojo. Jon Palmer, "Cavalry Escort", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: Hi,
I have Bayushi Kotomuri in one of my provinces. I wish to recruit him and I increase his cost with his invest ability, can I?
a) Bow Colonial Dojo to make him enter play for 0 gold cost, gaining his invest benefit. b) Bow Colonial Dojo to make hime enter play for 0 gold cost, and paying his invest cost additinaly to gain his invest ability. c) something else?
Does it work the same way if I use Cavalry Escort?
Thanks!
A: A) is the correct answer, you may use Colonial Dojo to pay both his base cost and Invest cost. The same is true when attaching Cavalry Escort - since it raises the Personality's cost by 5 and waives its own cost, Colonial Dojo will pay all related costs. Jon Palmer, "Colonial Dojo + Invest", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: Regarding the ruling on Cavalry Escort and Iweko Seiken, I assume if you use Cavalry Escort to recruit, say Kitsune Beiko and have the bear in the battlefield as well?
A: That's correct. Brook Cunningham, "Follow Up Question on Cavalry Escort and Recruiting", 2 Jul 2014 - Q: If you use Cavalry Escort to recruit Iweko Seiken, can you then also use his ability to recruit a non-unique samurai into the battlefield?
A: That is correct. Jon Palmer, "Cavalry Escort and Iweko Seiken", 23 Jun 2014 - Q: From this previous thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108608&p=1428055&hilit=cavalry+escort#p1428055
Sorry I'm asking again, but the answers to that question were not particuarly clear and I'm playing a kotei next week and this situation is extremely likely to happen.
My question is: If the scorpion player names "Cavalry Escort" with the stronghold, can I play Cavalry Escort, pay 0g so it's negated and then play another copy of Cavalry Escort (paying full price)?
I know I can play the second copy regardless of what I pay the first time. What I need to know if it's possible for me to pay 0g the first time to absorv the negation of TSEotS.
Cavalry Escort: Battle, : If this Follower is in your hand, Recruit your target Personality (paying all costs) for 5 more gold and attach this Follower (ignoring all costs) to him.
The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion: Tireless Open: Name a Fate card, or name a Dynasty card in play. Negate the effects of the next action from a card with that title.
A: Yes. You may pay 0G the first time, which will discard the Cavalry Escort and use up the Scorpion negation. Jon Palmer, "Cavalry Escort + Shadowed State - Cont.", 19 Jun 2014 - Q: Short story : i name Cavalry Escort with the Shadowed Estate open. My opponent declares an attack and in a battle (with presence) tries to use the battle from a cavalry escort in his hand.
Relevant texts : The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion Tireless Open: Name a Fate card, or name a Dynasty card in play. Negate the effects of the next action from a card with that title.
Cavalry Escort Battle, : If this Follower is in your hand, Recruit your target Personality (paying all costs) for 5 more gold and attach this Follower (ignoring all costs) to him.
I have trouble deciding between the two following endings :
- Opponent pays nothing, shows his Cavalry Escort, takes it back in his hand, and can do it again later this turn, successfuly this time. - Opponent pays nothing, shows his Cavalry Escort, then discards it.
The following linked ruling is about the Ring of the Void, and seams to imply there is a clean up phase for cards that have no know destination : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=106047&p=1397302&hilit=shadowed+estate#p1397302
Hence i think the second ending is the right one, but not understanding the quoted ruling i have trouble knowing if it applies. I didn't find relevant "clean up" phase in IvE comprehensive rules (i know it existed somewhat in EE in the old action resolution mode).
Thank you for your time .
A: If an action is taken from a card in hand (eg a Strategy, or an attachment with an ability that begins "If this XXX is in your hand"), it is discarded after the action ends unless it is now in play.
If Cavalry Escort has been named by The Shadowed Estate, the effect that puts it into play will fail, so the Cavalry Escort will be discarded when the action ends. Alex Jones, "Cavalry Escort + Shadowed Estate", 10 Jun 2014 - Q: After reading the ruling in this thread: Cavalry Escort and Ogre Bushi/Hida Zaiberu
Doesn't the above ruling contradict with this thread's ruling: Re: Cavarly Escort?
<Re: Cavarly Escort> thread's ruling was made 5 days after the ruling on the <Cavalry Escort and Ogre Bushi/Hida Zaiberu> thread's ruling. Since it was ruled that "Equiping is not the same as Attaching", would this mean Ogre Bushi and/or Hida Zaiberu get keep the Cavalry Escort follower on either of these two personalities when using this follower's ability?
A: No, Ogre Bushi nor Hida Zaiberu would not be able to keep a Cavalry Escort that brought them into play.
I'm sorry, but I see no contradiction in the two rulings. Brook Cunningham, "Re: Cavalry Escort and Ogre Bushi/Hida Zaiberu", 4 Jun 2014 - Q: I just wanted to check on this. I will just copy what I posted on the preview thread:
Right / Wrong?
Thanks!
A: Cavalry Escort says you attach the card to the Recruited Personality. Attaching is not the same as Equiping, even though attaching is an effect of a Equip action.
When you Equip a Follower/Spell/Item, it's costs must be paid.
When you simply attach a Follower/Spell/Item, costs do not have to be paid.
Hope that helps clear things up! Ben Higgins, "Cavalry Escort", 3 Jun 2014
