Rules Q&A
- Q: Can Stone of Remembrance negate the destruction of one of my cards from another player's action if that action targeted more than one card.
For example, if Burn the Village targeted 2 of my personalities, could I use Stone to negate the destruction of one of those personalities?
Would the Stone be able negate the destruction of both of the personalities from Burn the Village?
A: Since it does not say "targets exactly one of your cards", the reaction can be used on the targeting of any one of a group of multiple targets. It would in this case only negate the destruction of the single card to whose targeting you were reacting. Jon Palmer, "Stone of Remembrance", 16 Oct 2011 - Q: Also Offices of the emerald magistrates says paying the gold cost of an action ON a strategy, does that mean it cant actualy pay for the card? like it cannot pay for [Burn the VIllage] but it can pay for [Certain Death]?
A: It can pay for both. The Gold Cost in the coin is also ON the Strategy card. Brook Cunningham, "When Paying", 16 Feb 2011 - Q: Hello,
In relation to this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=83240 ; is it legal to have Chugo Seido redirect the targeting of Samurai Personality A by the player who uses Burn the Village on Samurai Personality B which is also targeted by the same player and Burn the Village? Providing that both Samurai are of course at the same location.
Chugo Seido says: Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your personalities, destroy this card: The action instead targets one of your Samurai of your choice at the same location, if legal.
Burn the Village says: Limited: Each player may target one or two Personalities, each of whose base Gold Cost is equal to or lower than his controller's Stronghold's Gold production plus two. Destroy the targeted personalities. Remove all of them that are Shadowlands from the game.
A: No.
Glossary, Targeting: When multiple targets are chosen simultaneously, the same target cannot be chosen twice. This also means that when one target out of multiple, already-chosen targets is being changed, another one of those already-chosen targets cannot legally become the new target. Alex Jones, "duty vs burn the village", 30 Apr 2010 - Q: Card text from Burn the Village:
"Limited: Each player may target one or two Personalities, each of whose base Gold Cost is equal to or lower than his controller's Stronghold's Gold production plus two. Destroy the targeted personalities. Remove all of them that are Shadowlands from the game."
From the 'In play and out of play' section of the Comprehensive Rules:
"Cards that are not in play or in a resolution, entering-play or focusing area have the following limitations:
* They may not be targeted. * Their continuous traits do not produce effects.
EXCEPTION: Continuous effects on cards out of play affect only the card itself.
* They are not affected by effects. * Abilities on them may not be used, and triggered traits on them are not triggered. * They may not be used or changed to pay costs. "
Emphasis mine. Does this mean the last effect will fail unless something has prevented the destruction of the Shadowlands personalities? Or does the following exemption again from the same section of the Comprehensive Rules apply: "The above limitations are overridden when a reference is made to cards in an out-of-play area, or an effect that would normally put a card in an out-of-play area or that refers to a card in such an area."
Just seeking clarification, please. I think I understand the intent of the card, and that the last part of the above exemption will cover things, but I'd rather not be asking this question in a Kotei
Thanks, Mark
A: Burn the Village expects the Personalities to be in the discard pile, so this is the text that allows Burn the Village to affect them: The above limitations are overridden when a reference is made to cards in an out-of-play area. Alex Jones, "Burn the Village and Shadowlands Personalities", 2 Feb 2010 - Q: [OBH]
I'm using stronghold: Sepulcher of Bone because it has one of the coolest stronghold names. I play Burn The Village on my opponent's two boxable personalities: one of whom has a follower. As a trait of my stronghold do I create one, two, or three 1F Undead Shadowlands Followers?
A: Three. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 2 Aug 2026
