Rules Q&A
- Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=112349&p=1454589&hilit=Contemplative+Shrine#p1454589
in reference to the above ruling, when unbowed can i announce Yusuke's action to dishonor and striaghten him, bow him to produce 2 gold for the zero gold cost action, have the action then unbow him and announce attaching a 4 gold cost follower, produce 2 more gold so he pays for it all by himself?
A: This is a change in the new rules. An action needs to have a possible gold cost in order for you to produce gold for it. Jon Palmer, "yoritomo yusuke", 5 Mar 2015 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=112349
Is this ruling correct?
From the CR:
As you mentioned you can't pay a cost for an action without a cost, therefore the trigger of the trait on contemplative shrine, as on any other holding is not fulfilled.
A: I'm discussing the reply with Alex and should have a final answer this week. Roger Giner-Sorolla, "Re: Producing Gold + Contemplative Shrine", 15 Feb 2015 - Q: With the current wording, Step B of the Action Sequence makes no mention of an action requiring gold before one can bow a gold producing holding. This means that no matter the action one could bow a holding and add gold to the pool. Is this intentional?
Under the current wording it appears that you can announce the action on an unbowed Contemplative Shrine, bow it to add 3g to the pool during the Pay Costs step and then discard a card to straighten the holding, keeping the 3g. Is this correct?
A: That is correct. You may bow holdings to produce gold during the Pay Costs step of any action, not just actions with a gold cost.
You may not, however, pay gold - neither from that newly produced gold, nor from your pool - on an action without a gold cost, nor pay more gold than the cost of the action. Alex Jones, "Producing Gold + Contemplative Shrine", 29 Jan 2015 - Q: Going the comments regarding the 0g Equip action in viewtopic.php?f=59&t=111376#p1449740 the following is legal.
Announce Equip action as an Open. Bow Contemplative Shrine to add 3g to the gold pool. Declare that you are paying 0g to the Equip action. Opponent takes action or passes. Use Contemplative Shrine straighten ability. Opponent takes action or passes. Announce Equip action as an Open. Bow Contemplative Shrine to add 3g to the gold pool. Declare that you are paying 6g to the Equip action. Equip a 6g or lower attachment.
Is this correct?
A: Per the update to the CR, "The rulebook Equip and Recruit actions, likewise, require that the player can and does pay the Gold cost that corresponds to a legal card to bring into play." Therefore this will no longer work, as you must pay the gold corresponding to the legal card to bring into play. Jon Palmer, "Adding more gold than needed to the gold pool", 5 Jan 2015 - Q: Can you discard Okui (RtR) to straighten Contemplative Shrine (Onyx)?
A: Yes. The trait is affecting itself, making it a "Spell" in addition to its Follower type, so it is in effect always, even while not in play. Brook Cunningham, "Onyx Lives #rules-questions", 1 Jun 2024
