Rules Q&A
- Q: This question came up tonight, and whilst we ruled it version A earlier the more I consider the less sure I am.
I announce Relocating The Court when defending. In the pay costs can I
A - pay 2 gold so when I have bowed my courtier that my opponent has to choose the Abbot when he targets his personality? Or
B - I have no opportunity to ever pay 2 gold so my opponent could not target The Abbotveven if he wanted? Or
C - something else?
Thanks Az
A: If you pay the 2G, the Targeting Paradoxes section makes it so the Abbot must be targeted. Jon Palmer, "The Abbot - Relocating the Court", 27 Mar 2015 - Q: Hi,
I was reading rulings today and was confused by how this ruling

Interacts with this ruling

If targeting now happens when costs are paid, which is before any interrupt is played where can the 2 gold additional cost be paid to target The Abbot as the pay costs step has already happened. Likewise if 2 Gold is paid in the initial costs step of the action in order to target The Abbot can it be redirected to another personality given the addiotional gold cost.
Thank you for clarifying this
Az
A: That's on me, I messed up interpreting the paradoxes section. I've updated my incorrect ruling regarding the Abbot, the Favor, and Traditionalist. Jon Palmer, "The Abbot and targeting and redirects", 23 Mar 2015 - Q: Hi, I have a question: I am attacking with unit A and the Abbot, my opponent has no unbowed gold. I have Traditionalist in play. My opponent trying to use Imperial Favor on unit A, which I am interrupting with the Traditionalist. What happened next, the Abbot could not be targeted with Imperial Favour due the lack of gold. The question is: what happens with Imp Favor?
A: In order for the Abbot to be a legal target, you must have paid 2G during the Pay Cost steps. If you didn't, you're constrained not to choose him as a target, so you can't retarget to the Abbot.
So since the Abbot isn't a legal target there is no legal target, Traditionalist's interrupt won't have any effect. Jon Palmer, "Traditionalist Vs Imperial Fav Vs The Abbot", 17 Mar 2015 - Q: Hi all,
So to ask for clarification regarding the new "Targeting Paradoxes" section of Comprehensive Rules as it is not very clear to me when some things should happen from this thread

If i have The Abbot and a Yojimbo at the Battlefield and a copy of Final Sacrifice in hand. My opponent declares an action (say Block Supply Lines) when does he pay the extra 2g to allow him to target the Abbot? Does he hay to pay it in initial costs step (i.e. before interrupts or targeting in effects block) or when he targets (after interrupts. If he does Pay before can I then final sacrifice to redirect or is it no longer a legal target?
thanks
Az
A: If your opponent wishes to target The Abbot with his Block Supply Lines, he must pay 2g during the Pay Costs step of the action.
As per the Targeting Paradoxes section, this ties the action to targeting The Abbot: no other card is a legal target (unless that card also has a similar effect that makes the action targeting it cost 2g extra). Alex Jones, "Re: The Abbot", 19 Feb 2015 - Q: Did the rules team ever come to a concensus on how The Abbots trait works with the fact that the window for paying (and thus, increasing) costs comes before any targeting from the action?
Thank you
A: Yes, the Abbot is now a specific example in the Comprehensive Rules under the recently added section, "targeting paradoxes" and he works as you might think he does from a non-technical reading. Roger Giner-Sorolla, "Re: The Abbot", 15 Feb 2015
