Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello,
I play an unstoppable death, for example Serenity, and kill my opponent's personality. Can he interrupt with A Good Death?
I'm not really sure aout when the unstoppable trigger ends, and if a Good Death is on the action timing, or the death timing. My guess is you can't.
A Good Death Interrupt: If the action is another player's, after it destroys your defending Follower or Personality, give your target Personality +2F and Resilient, and gain 2 Honor. (Once per game per card, a Resilient card does not die in battle resolution.)
Serenity Unstoppable Battle, : Target your unbowed Samurai. Ranged Attack equal to his Personal Honor. (Other players cannot Interrupt Unstoppable actions.)
Thank you!
A: Other players cannot Interrupt your Unstoppable actions.
To answer your question about timing... Unlike Reactions, Interrupts are only played in the Interrupt step of the action they're interrupting. If A Good Death were a Reaction, you would play it during the action's Resolution, (immediately) after the Personality is destroyed.
However, with Interrupts, the trigger isn't a statement of when the action is played: instead, it's a statement of when to apply the delayed effect created by the Interrupt.
Note that not all Interrupts have an explicit trigger like this, nor do they all create delayed effects. For example, Absolution, as well as having no explicit trigger, negates all the effects of the action, which technically is a type of ongoing effect. Similarly, Devastating Betrayal may create an instantaneous effect, immediately changing the target of the action. Alex Jones, "A Good Death interrupting Unstoppable Death", 23 Feb 2015 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=111091 Relentless was ruled like this, which is ok I can follow this: You must be able to show that you will be able to target your opposed card (at the current battlefield) when you announce Relentless; if you cannot, you may not announce the action.
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=111044 However when I have a lone defender without follower at a battlefield, I should not be able to announce A Good Death, since I am not able to show that I will be able to target a personality to give it +2F and Resilient. Because the target is choosen AFTER my lone defender died, I will never be able to target anyone with this action since nobody it there after my defender died. So according to the Relentless ruling I should not be allowed to announce this action at all, if I only have a lone defender.
A: The rules don't support a level of inference of "I know my Personality will be dead", which is why A Good Death may be played in this case, and Relentless may not. Jon Palmer, "Relentless and A Good Death - Rulings", 5 Jan 2015 - Q: A Good Death
Have one Personality at home and during battle my another alone defender is going to be destroyed. I interrupt killing action with A Good Death.
1) Could i target Personality at home to give him Resilient this turn? 2) Will i gain 2 honor?
A: Because of the Rule of Location, the Personality you target with A Good Death must be at the current battlefield.
However, since the targeting is done when A Good Death is played, that Personality may be your lone defender. The Force bonus and Resiliant keyword will be somewhat wasted, but you will gain 2 honour. Alex Jones, "A Good Death", 3 Dec 2014
