Rules Q&A
- Q: My opponent has 1 more Family Honor than me. He uses the Lobby action with one of his Personalities, and I interrupt to that with A New Factor's Courage, thus gaining 1 honor and tying him in honor. Does his Lobby action fail? If it does, does his personality remain bowed?
"LOBBY # Political Limited: If you have higher Family Honor than each other player, bow your target unbowed Personality with 1 or more Personal Honor to take the Imperial Favor."
Thanks in advance.
A: His lobby action fails, and his Personality does not bow.
Conditions in the effects text of an ability are checked during the resolution segment of the action, so if your opponent's honour is not higher than yours at that point, his lobby action fails.
Note that this is in addition to the check required by item 3 of the Good Faith Rule, for any ability which starts with a condition, which must be made when announcing the action. Alex Jones, "A New Factor and Lobby", 19 Jun 2015 - Q: Cycle ability: Limited: If it is your first turn, choose one or more face-up cards in your Provinces. Put them on the bottom of your deck in any order. Then (after refilling Provinces), turn all cards in your Provinces face-up.
Courage ability: Repeatable Courage Interrupt: Discard a Courage card from your hand to give one of the action’s Fear effects either +2 or-2 strength.
New Factors: Courage After you discard this Strategy from a Courage action, gain 1 Honor. Favor Political Open: If this Strategy is in your discard pile, discard the Imperial Favor and remove this Strategy from the game to draw a card.
Since there are no conditions or targets on the Courage rulebook ability, can I discard New Factors to use the Courage Interrupt on the Cycle Limited (and by extension, any action)?
Should there be such a condition?
A: Yes, you may. Courage's player ability does not begin with "If", so there are no restrictions on when it may be played. And it will always be a Courage action, so New Factors will give you 1 honor from it. Jon Palmer, "Can I gain honour from New Factors by interrupting the Cycle action?", 7 Jun 2015
