Rules Q&A
- Q: RE: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=114671&p=1483124&hilit=ring+of+earth#p1483124
It's been almost a full month since it was "under discussion". We're now in Kotei season and this has a massive impact on a bunch of regularly played cards, not an obscure combo or interaction. Can we get an update on this?
A: Brazen Disregard has been errata'd, so that it only negates movement from the action it Interrupts, not any other movement from the same Strategy, whether from a trait, an action using another ability, or an action using the same ability as the original action. If you use Brazen Disregard to Interrupt an action taken using the ability granted by Accessible Terrain, the action is from a Strategy, so the movement will be negated, but only for that one action: further actions from the same Accessible Terrain are not affected.
Similarly, Ring of Earth only negates movement from the action it Interrupts. It has no effect on any other actions from the same ability. Alex Jones, "Accessible Terrain + Brazen Disregard/Ring of Earth", 31 Aug 2015 - Q: Fall Back!: Move home your target Personality. As he moves, straighten his unit and you may straighten one of your other units (at any location).
Brazen Disregard: Absent Interrupt: If the action is from a Strategy, negate any movement from its effects.
Since i am not a native Speaker this could be a stupid question:
If Brazen Disregard is used on Fall Back the straighening part does not happen for the first target. What happens to the second one?
A: It does not straighten the second target either. "As he moves" is the trigger for both straightening effects, so if he does not move, they do not straighten. By my reading of Accesible Terrain, it grants each player a Player Abilty, why is it considered a Card Effect?
A: Because it still comes FROM Accessible Terrain, and therefore is a card effect. Again, note that the exception under "From" in the CR does NOT apply to abilities granted to players, only to abilities granted to other cards. Jon Palmer, "Accesible Terrain vs. Brazen Disregard or Iron Armor", 27 Mar 2015 - Q: Under 20F rules, can Brazen Disregard stop the movement from an Accessible Terrain?
The 20F rules state "The source is the card that the effect, action or targeting is printed on, or the rulebook if it is printed there" and "Effects of traits and abilities given to other cards, copied from other cards, or on created cards, come from the card they are on.", making no mention of players being a possible source.
A: In this case, Accessible Terrain is still the source of the effect, as it does not fit either of the exceptions listed under "From". Brazen Disregard will stop it.
For clarification, note that you must use Brazen Disregard to Interrupt the Absent Repeatable Battle; playing it to Interrupt the Absent Battle that puts Accessible Terrain into play will NOT prevent all movement from Accessible Terrain. Jon Palmer, "Accessible Terrain and Brazen Disregard", 27 Mar 2015 - Q: If I use Brazen Disregard to prevent my unit from being moved home with Block Supply Lines, does this also prevent my unit from being bowed? Block Supply Lines specifically says "Bow his unit as he moves" ... and he no longer moves.
Thank you!
A: Yes, that is correct, and it's the reason Block Supply Lines is worded the way it is. His bowing is contingent upon his moving. So if you prevent the move, he does not bow. Jon Palmer, "Brazen Disregard + Block Supply Lines", 17 Feb 2015 - Q: Hi Rules Team,
My opponent plays an Encircles Terrain. Can I play a Brazen Disregard to counter it's effects?
I understand it can, since the movement comes from a Strategy, but I'd like to be sure.
Thanks!
Code: Select all Brazen Disregard: Absent Interrupt: If the action is from a Strategy, negate any movement from its effects.
Encircled Terrain: Before this battle resolves, the Attacker and Defender, in the order of your choice, each choose one of their own Personalities at its battlefield. Move all other Personalities there home. Battle: Destroy a Terrain (if able). Put this Terrain into play.
A: Pronouns: "Pronouns and pronoun-like terms, like “him or her,” “it,” “them,” or “that Personality,” refer to the last possible thing mentioned in the text that the term would logically refer to."
Because Interrupts modify the action they're interrupting unless it explicitly states otherwise, in this case "its effects" refers to the action. In order to have "its effects" logically refer to "the Strategy", Brazen Disregard would need a wording such as "from the Strategy's effects". Instead, it falls on the default, which is to only modify the action itself, and therefore it will not stop Encircled Terrain's trait.
We do try to line up the pronouns in addition to this, and we missed on this card. Jon Palmer, "Brazen Disregard vs Encircled Terrain", 5 Jan 2015
