Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello,
My opponent executes the Tactical Advantage ability on his personality. As my next action, I play Ruby Ascension to cancel the force bonus from Tactical Advantage. He Interrupts with Courage Beyond Question to counteract Ruby Ascension claiming that because I am cancelling his force bonus, that is in effect a penalty. I say it is not a penalty, rather it is just cancelling a bonus and therefore cannot be stopped by Courage Beyond Question.
Who is correct?
A: Negating a bonus is not a penalty.
See Bonuses and Penalties: When a bonus, penalty, maximum, or minimum ends or is negated, the resulting stat change is not a penalty or bonus. Alex Jones, "Courage Beyond Question vs. Ruby Ascension", 4 Aug 2015 - Q: Wedge: Battle: Target your Personality. You may not use abilities on cards in his unit or target them with actions. Before this battle resolves, double his unit's Force. Destroy him after the battle ends.
Courage Beyond Question: Interrupt: Negate all Force bonuses and penalties from the action.
question 1) will wedge force bonus still be negated, even if wedge bonus is a delayed effect? or will the interrupt do nothing since its a delayed effect?
2) will the wedge target still dies since he didnt double his force?
A: Courage Beyond Question will negate force bonuses from an action even if those bonuses are delayed as in the case of Wedge.
The Wedged Personality's destruction and the force bonus are unrelated, and therefore even if the bonus is negated, the Personality will still be destroyed. Jon Palmer, "wedge + courage beyond question", 17 Apr 2015 - Q: Courage Beyond QUestion
Strength in Subtlety
Does CBQ played as an interupt negate both the +2F and the -2F from SiS?
A: Courage Beyond Question's Interrupt only negates "Force bonuses and penalties from the action": it will not negate a Force penalty from a trait. Alex Jones, "Courage Beyond QUestion and Strength in Subtlety", 30 Mar 2015 - Q: The comprehensive rules state:
" A token conveys its stat modifications to any card or Province it is on, and these modifications are considered bonuses and penalties. A token’s “printed” stat bonus or penalty is the one it was created with. "
So can you negate (for a turn) the force bonuses applied by Force Tokens using Courage Beyond Question as an interrupt to the action that creates the tokens?
Regardless of the above answer, can I just also confirm that Breaking the Rhythm (or similar cards) can be played as an action to negate bonuses that includes those from the tokens, for the turn?
Thanks.
A: The force (or other stat) bonus (or penalty) from a token comes "from the last effect that placed the token on the card or area". If that "last effect" is an action, an effect that negates that action's force bonuses will negate - for the same duraction - any force bonuses from tokens created (or transferred) by that action. Alex Jones, "Courage Beyond Question and +F Tokens", 9 Mar 2015 - Q: Can Courage Beyond Question's interrupt negate force bonuses from a terrain like Contentious Terrain?
If so, then the terrain card would still be in play, correct?
A: It would not. Contentious Terrain's bonuses come from the terrain's trait, not from the action (which puts it in play). Jon Palmer, "Courage Beyond Question", 3 Feb 2015 - Q: If I play contentious terrain can someone use the interrupt on courage beyond question to negate the force bonus, even though the action itself is giving no force?
Courage Beyond Question Interrupt: Negate all force bonuses or penalties from the action.
Contentious Terrain Battle: Destroy a terrain (if able), and put this terrain into play. Trait: Your personalities at the battlefield have +1 force.
A: No. "The Action" is not giving the force bonus here, the terrain's trait is.
Generally, cards that affect "the action" don't affect what terrains are doing, unless they negate the action of putting the terrain in play. It's not always the case, but it's a good rule of thumb. Jon Palmer, "TNO Courage Beyond Question and Contentious Terrain", 14 Jan 2015
