Rules Q&A
- Q: This question is concerning the interaction of the final maximum handsize, because the multiple meanings of "maximum" here are confusing.
My understanding is that If the Brotherhood Sensei player controls 5 (or more) temples, their "maximum hand size" stat is set to 11 (or more), then gets -1 from the Scorpion stronghold, then the final number has a maximum of 10 applied to it. If this is not correct, could you explain the interaction?
Thanks.
A: It's more the other way round, but essentially you're correct: the Brotherhood Sensei player's maximum hand size is 6 (basic) + -1 (Scorpion Stronghold) + 5 = 10, with a maximum of 10 then applied.
See here for a fuller explanation. Alex Jones, "Brotherhood Sensei vs Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion", 30 Jun 2015 - Q: Just looking for a little clarification. In effects that set a force or chi to a specific value, this is considered a bonus or penalty. The new unicorn SH sets its value to a specific number and this is not considered a gold production bonus or penalty. Why are these different?

A: I think you misunderstand me here, in particular the underlined phrase: "... the Stronghold's trait begins to apply, setting the Stronghold's GP to 4, which is done by applying no bonus or penalty."
The "bonus or penalty" required to set a value of 4 to a value of 4 is 0, which is defined by the rules as being neither a bonus nor a penalty.
If you are not using a Sensei with a GP modifier, the trait will create a penalty of -1GP to set the Stronghold's GP to 4; if you had a Sensei with a -2GP modifier (or, say, you're using Brotherhood Sensei and your opponent is using Nio Sensei), the Stronghold's trait would create a bonus of +1GP. due to this:

anything?
Does -1g refers to gold on strongold or trait also?
A: The trait on the Endless Plains of the Unicorn is to be read as setting the Stronghold's GP stat to a value on the first turn.
So, when the Stronghold and Sensei are revealed, the Sensei's GP modifier is applied, so that in the Endless Plains + Brotherhood Sensei scenario, the Strongold's GP is 4. At the start of the Unicorn player's first turn, the Stronghold's trait begins to apply, setting the Stronghold's GP to 4, which is done by applying no bonus or penalty.
For the first turn, then, the Stronghold's GP stat calculation is: 5 (printed) + -1 (Sensei) + 0 (trait) = 4. Alex Jones, "Brotherhood Sensei + Endless Plains of the Unicorn (20F)", 14 Jan 2015
