Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi,
If I play advance warning to move home my attacking Matsu Tayuko, do I lower the province's strength by 3 or by 1?
Advance Warning: Battle: Move your target Personality home. If he is a Scout, straighten his unit. Raise or lower the current province's strength by his Force.
Matsu Tayuko Tayuko has +2F while attacking. 1F/3C
Thanks and regards
A: You lower the province's strength by 1.
Tayuko is only "attacking" while she is in an attacking army, but Advance Warning only checks her force after she's moved home. Alex Jones, "Advance warning and Matsu Tayuko", 27 May 2014 - Q: Ok the first one came up in a game and just want to confirm that it was legit:
I am defending away from an attacking horde that takes my province. 4 on their side 3 on mine. At my battle I play 2x reprisal on my 4 force unit making it 6 force. On my first reprisal attack I play Advance warning and lower the province strength by 6. On my second I assign the same unit to the same province. I take the province.
My opponent really wants to confirm if that was totaly legal. (He really wants it to be)
I guess the real quesiton is what is the duration of the lowered province strenght for advance warning.
A: The default duration for any effect without another one stated is "end of turn". So, enjoy that lowered PS through both Reprisal attacks! Brook Cunningham, "Multiple Reprisal + Advance Warning", 19 May 2014 - Q: The wording on the card is broken down into three sentences and I'd like to know if the, "If he is a Scout" requirement in the second sentence carries on as a requirement for the third sentence (province strength boost/reduction).
In other words, can a non-scout move home, not straighten, and then raise/lower the province strength by his Force?
Relevant text: Advance Warning "Battle: Move your target Personality home. If he is a Scout, straighten his unit. Raise or lower the current province's strength by his Force."
A: Yes. Advance Warning's first and third effects do not require the Personality to be a Scout; the second does. Jon Palmer, "Advance Warning & non-scouts", 5 Mar 2014 - Q: Hi there. Just want to clarify this.
Advance Warning: Battle: Move your target Personality home. If he is a Scout, straighten his unit. Raise or lower the current province's strength by his Force.
The Impregnable Fortress of the Crab: Your Crab Clan Personalities have +1F while opposed.
Question: As a Crab player, when I play Advance Warning to move home my opposed Crab Clan personality with printed 3F, do I raise/lower the current province's strength by his opposed Force (4F) or unopposed Force (3F)?
Many thanks!
A: Because effects resolve in the order written, the Personality would no longer be opposed when the raise/lower effect kicks in, so you'd only get the 3F change. Jon Palmer, "Advance Warning and The Impregnable Fortress of the Crab", 2 Feb 2014 - Q: Does Doji Etsuki's battle ability function the same as the previously questioned Advance Warning, wherein it has two distinct and separate effects for his Battle action? For example, if there are no dishonorable enemies to target with the first statement, would he still be able to raise or lower province strength?
A: Yes and no. The effects are separate, but there's also such a thing as required targeting, which you need to meet to even take the action. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 7 Jun 2024
