Rules Q&A
- Q: Ninja Open: Create a battlefield (not at any Province). Assign Kumoru to attack there and another player's target unbowed Personality to defend there. Fight a battle there. Battle resolution there will not destroy Personalities. Lose 2 Honor.
a) Does this prevent the defender from assigning any more Personalities? If so, please explain why.
b) Can both players Cavalry engage?
A: a) No other Personalities may assign. Assignment is done via a card effect, which in this case is just Kumoru and the target, or via the rulebook, which lets you assign Personalities to battles as part of an Attack Phase. Fighting the battle is an effect of Kumoru's action: it's not caused by the rulebook; none of the steps of an Attack Phase occur outside an Attack Phase unless a card effect says they do.
b) Yes. The Cavalry ability is an Engage ability which may be used during the battle's Engage Segment as normal - although if you do, you obviously can't then use it in later battles that turn. Alex Jones, "Goju Kumoru / Ambush", 26 Jul 2015 - Q: Does the use of Goju Kumoru's open ability count to the requirement on Toshigoku's Blade that I declare an attack phase? By my understanding ambush type effects like Kumoru create an attack phase. There are 2 scenarios I'd like clarified:
If Kumoru has the Blade attached, uses his ability and returns home from the battle unbowed does he have to be assigned in the normal attack phase?
If the Blade is on another personality and I use Kumoru's ability do I have to assign the personality with the Blade in the normal attack phase?
Thanks!
A: Goju Kumoru does not create an Attack Phase.
As described under Battles: Most battles will happen as part of an Attack Phase, but some effects create battles separately.
If you look at the various printings of Ambush, you'll note that the last one that created an Attack Phase was that for Lotus Edition; it stopped creating an Attack Phase with Samurai Edition. Alex Jones, "Goju Kumoru & Toshigoku's Blade", 23 Jul 2015 - Q: An opponent I was playing earlier was unsure whether Tairao's penalties would apply if his target is then assigned by Goju Kumoru to a battle generated by Kumoru's ability, citing the ruling from Poison Sake:
I assume that Tairao is different and his penalties will trigger because his ability is only triggered by assignment rather than the controller needing to assign, as is the case with with Poison Sake. Is this correct?
A: That is correct. Tairao doesn't care about who's assigning the Personality. Jon Palmer, "Goju Kumoru and Tairao", 17 Mar 2015 - Q: Goju Kumoru states that for his ability "Battle resolution there will not destroy Personalities". In a Kumoru battle where he wins or is tied at resolution are the enemy attachments destroyed (in the same manner that attachments are destroyed if a losing Personality is Resilient)?
Thanks!
A: Yes, the attachments will still be destroyed. Just not Personalities. Jon Palmer, "Goju Kumoru & his battle resolution", 17 Mar 2015
