Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi all,
Can't find a relevant thread so here is my question scenario:
I have a single Crab Personality defending and opposed. I have Cavalry Officer in discard and Barracks in play. So I play the Battle action from Barracks to attach the Officer, triggering the reaction. Now, can I attach the created 1F follower to one of my Personalities without follower at another location?
Thanks in advance.
A: Yes, you can.
Reactions are not subject to the rules of Presence or Location. Brook Cunningham, "Cavalry Officer + Castle Barracks", 12 May 2009 - Q: Concerning the ruling here
Castle Barracks specifies Defender. The question requesting a ruling asked about a defending ally. In view of other cards that specifically refer to allying as opposed to primary combatants such as Essence of Water, wouldn't the specific term 'Defender' in the Castle Barracks' text imply that the player cannot use it's ability as a defending ally?
A: The original question was about a Crab defending ally. A Crab ally may use the Ability when defending or attacking, and may waive the cost of the Follower if the target Personality is defending and opposed. A non-Crab ally may not use the Ability. Alex Jones, "Castle Barracks in Group", 2 Dec 2008 - Q: Castle Barracks: Can a crab player who allied with the defender pull followers from his discard pile waiving costs? (assuming he is opposed at the time)
A: Yes. If "he is defending and opposed" refers to the Personality, not the player. Zen Faulkes, "Castle Barracks in Group", 1 Dec 2008 - Q: I'm sure this question has been answered many times.... But if I use an ability on a follower, then it gets destroyed, but I bring it back into play right afterwards. Can I use its ability again? for example I use daidoji Gunso to lower the force of card A. Opponent destroys Daidoji Gunso I bring Daidoji Gunso back via Castle Barracks (can I now use Daidoji Gunso to lower the force of a card again?)
A: No, you cannot use the Follower's ability again that same turn. The card has not "forgotten" that its ability was used; in order for that to happen, it must be both out of play AND face-down (emphases mine):
http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule: "“Memory” of the status of individual cards ends when the card enters a deck or a hand, or otherwise becomes both face-down and out of play (such as after a card in the deck or hand is shown). This includes dishonorable status, ongoing effects, and whether or not an ability has been used."
(Side note, about your topic title:
Only Personalities in discard piles are ever referred to as "Dead".
http://rules.l5r.com/Physically_marked_card_states#In_play_and_out_of_play: "No distinction between destroyed and discarded non-Personality cards is made while they are in the discard pile; all such cards have the state "discarded."") Brook Cunningham, "Dead followers and such", 22 Mar 2008 - Q: Following situation:
I have a personality in play with the followers Brothers in Arms and Brothers in Arms Exp. I use the Battle ability, granted by the Brothers in Arms Exp., on the normal Brothers in Arms. Later that turn the Brothers in Arms Exp. get destroyed and go to the discard pile. Now the normal Brothers in Arms has lost its Battle ability. Now I use Castle Barracks to attach the Brothers in Arms Exp. to a personality, giving the Battle ability to all Brothers in Arms. Can the normal Brothers in Arms use his ability now? The main question is if a card gains an ability, loses it, and regains it later in the turn, is it restricted by the once per turn rule of abilities? The rulebook says each seperate ability can only be used once per turn. Are the gained and regained abilities the same or seperate? Thank you for your time.
A: It is considered to be a new effect on the card - and thus a new ability on the card distinct from any other the card might have or have had in the past. Martin Lund, "Gained Abilities and Once Per Turn", 17 Jan 2008 - Q: Can the gold producing traits on Fortified Camp and Castle Barracks pay for Hida Dayu's ability? Will the Reaction on Fortified Camp 'save' a Follower created by Hida Dayu's ability?
Hida Dayu Limited: Pay 3 Gold: Create a 2F Follower card and attach it to one of your target Crab Clan Hero Personalities.
Fortified Camp Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or produce 3 Gold if paying for an attachment. Reaction: After another player’s action destroys one of your attachment cards or it’s Personality: Attach the card to one of your target Personalities (paying all costs).
Castle Barracks Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or 3 Gold when paying for a Follower.
Thanks for your continued help and patience!
A: No and no. Paying for an action that creates a follower is not the same as paying for an attachment.
Created cards only exist in play, and are removed from the game if they ever leave play. ( http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Created_cards ) Chris Fuchs, "Hida Dayu and Fortied Camp/Castle Barracks", 25 Aug 2007
