- You may combine Ranged Attacks from cards in different units.
Before you target an uncombined Ranged Attack from a card in your current attacking army, once per battle, you may target the current battlefield's Province with it instead of an enemy card. If you did, give the Province a strength penalty equal to the Ranged Attack's strength.
Before one of your cards bows for the cost of a Ranged Attack action, once per battle, you may ignore the cost; if you did, its Ranged Attacks may only target an enemy card. - Legality

- Erratum: Reads, "Castle of the Wasp 7PS 4GP 3FH You may combine Ranged Attacks from different units. Once per battle, you may target the current Province with an uncombined Ranged Attack from an attacking card you control at that battlefield. The attack reduces the Province’s strength by its strength. Once per battle, a card you control needs not bow to produce a Ranged Attack targeting cards opposing it." [MRP, Lotus Edition, 31 October 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 145
- Cannot prevent bowing when a card produces consecutive Ranged Attacks, because those are not a "single or combined Ranged Attack." [Stronghold text, ZF, 17 August 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 145
- The cost of bowing a Shungenja to cast a spell that generates a Ranged Attack cannot be waived using the stronghold trait, because the effects are produced by the spell, not the Shugenja. [JA, 6 February 2004] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 145
- Only cards attacking the current Province may be used to lower its Province strength. [JA, 24 February 2004] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 145
- Only waives bowing when it occurs as a cost, not when it is an effect (e.g., Guerrilla Tactics). [ZF, web, 1 February 2006] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 145
- Q: On Castle of the Wasp, what does the phrase "from exactly one of your attacking cards" mean? A: It means uncombined. It does not preclude a ranged attack made by one card and modified with another. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, April 26, 2004, p. 10
Rules Q&A
- Q: Is there anything that prevents Moshi Kekiesu from shooting at followers (very effective, as they have 0 chi, usually)? Is there any restriction that prevents her from shooting provinces, using Castle of the Wasp?
A: She's very effective at shooting Followers. It is fair game.
She can reduce the Province's Strength with Castle of the Wasp. Castle of the Wasp changes the effect of the ranged attack. It is still a Strength 2 Ranged Attack. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 September 2004", 10 Sep 2004 - Q: This is related to the Castle of the Wasp question, but different enough it is worth asking. If I am playing City of Rememberence, and I use the once per turn, your shugenja does not have to bow to perform an Innate ability with Toshiji. I discard the spell, saying I am using the once per turn on the Stronghold.
A: You can't do it that way. It is out of order. First you announce the Spell. Then you target with it. Then you pay costs, including using effects that waive or modify costs. Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 August 2004", 13 Aug 2004 - Q: I am a Mantis player using the Castle of the Wasp stronghold. I have an overlayed Tsuruchi Nobumoto XP in play and used his action so that he is Cavalry and he has attached a Shinjo Horsebow. The following statements are true and exhaustive to the best of my knowledge.
A: I went through the rather exhaustive list, and everything seemed perfectly reasonable and accurate with only one caveat that I could see. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 July 2004", 15 Jul 2004 - Q: Can *Castle of the Wasp*'s trait allowing a ranged attack to be performed without bowing be used to allow a bowed personality to perform a ranged attack that is printed on that personaliy, despite the rule prohibiting actions printed on bowed cards from being used unless the card says otherwise?
A: No. You can't use the abilities of cards or strongholds that are bowed, even if the ability itself can be used without bowing the card or stronghold. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 54) Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 July 2004", 13 Jul 2004 - Q: Something has been bugging me about this and I've finally been able to pin it down...
If I use the Castle of the Wasp to prevent a personality from bowing, and that ranged attack is cancelled, why is the not considered used?
A: The real question is, "Why can you use it at all, since the Personality isn't making a ranged attack by the time you could use the trait to prevent the bowing?"
Basically, it is a hold-over ruling. It is getting cleaned up with some other cancellation revamping coming out soon. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 June 2004", 2 Jul 2004 - Q: Did the PTB ever get around to saying wether or not the Castle of the Wasp and Shinden Horiuchi are used up if the action gets cancelled? I didn't see it in the rules digests, but I might have missed it.
A: As it stands now, no, they are not "used up" if the Action they were used for is Canceled.
Folks are discussing how this should be dealt with in the future, though, so it might change for Lotus rules. Martin Lund, "Rules for 26 June 2004", 29 Jun 2004 - Q: Rule Question 2: Cancelling a "once per turn." Using Castle of the Wasp, I perform, once per turn, a ranged attack against an opposing personality without bowing. They use Flee The Darkness to cancel it. Can I use Castle of the Wasp again this turn to perform a ranged attack without bowing?
A: Yes, you can use it later, since you didn't successfuly complete the clause this time. The Action was canceled during the Targeting Step, thus you never produced a Ranged Attack, as required by the ability.
I have an interesting quibble about the way I see this get played at tournaments, however, and I'm going to bring it up to the Rules Team:
If the Action is Canceled during targeting, it is a known part of the game state that it will not produce a Ranged Attack. However, I'm still required to pay the cost of the Action even if it got canceled.
"Although targeting occurs before costs are paid, if an action is canceled at the targeting step (e.g., Balance in Nothingness), all costs must still be paid. Variable costs may be chosen based on the knowledge that the action has been canceled. [JA, 15 May 2003, 18 December 2003]" (Accumulated Rulings, Canceling and Negation)
With that in mind, when you get to paying costs for the Canceled Action, is it even legal to use the trait to waive the bowing cost when you know you aren't going to produce a Ranged Attack? I'm going to run this by the Rules Team to iron out the kinks. Until then, however, play by the standing ruling. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: #2. Say I have Castle of the Wasp, and Hiro Exp. Can i use the castle's ability t o do a range 5 without bowing, and then as my next battle action bow him to do another range 5?
A: Assuming he's still alive for your next battle Action, sure you can. Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 May 2004", 26 May 2004 - Q: Sorry, this was from a few weeks ago, but it took me a while to get around to posting the question. Rokuro might have been in the battle, or I might have bowed someone else, or it might have been pre-errata and I'm just remembering it wrong due to the rules change. That part doesn't really matter.
A: OK, I see where you are going with this:
"If my Ranged Attack with Tsuruchi Nobumoto gets canceled, what happens?"
Well, first of all, Kyuden Ikoma has to cancel the action before it produces any effects, which is well before it send Nobumoto home and triggers Right Hand. Hence, if it is canceled, Nobumoto will still be at the Province AND you won't have had a chance to use the Right Hand.
To the second point, yes, you did use your Stronghold's trait. No, it doesn't matter because the Action was canceled. The next time you try to use it, the Stronghold isn't going to find an instance where you produced a Ranged Attack without bowing (that RA effect was never produced), so its Once Per Turn limit isn't met yet. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 April 2004 (no jokes)", 3 Apr 2004 - Q: I have a couple of questions.
Can the abilites on the Castle of the Wasp be used while it is bowed?
A: They are not abilities because they do not begin with any of the game's four standard action keywords. These effects can be used while the Stronghold is bowed. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: I've got this strange idea forming in my mind :
Agasha Chieh XP is considered in an army when she cast a spell. That's how she works, but what is the status to the cards in her unit?
They're not.
And what is her status (is she an attacking unit?)
If you are the Attacker or an attacking ally.
Practical exemple where this can matters : She is played out of Castle of the Wasp, does the *insert name of a Range Attack Spell here* is considered an attacking card while she cast it.
No.
I'm pretty much confused here. Sometimes I like to play devil's advocate for the rules game, but I'm actually befuddled right now.
Please point out any flaws in the following reasoning: 1)The instant I declare that I'm using Agasha Chieh's trait for cast as if she were in the battle, she then becomes in the battle for all intensive purposes other than moving into the battle.
A: "Intents and purposes". But, yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 2-3 March 2004", 4 Mar 2004 - Q: 4) If she uses a ranged attack spell that my opponent could somehow redirect to a card in my army, then she could be targeted as if she doesn't have followers even if she has them because only she, and not her followers, is she treated as if she is in the battle. 5) If only she is considered in the battle, how does she cast spells that are attached to her if they're not considered in the battle? (After all, doesn't that imply that she is the source of the ranged attack and not the spell?) If she casts a ranged attack spell, why can't she use the Castle of the Wasp trait?
A: Hmm. Good point. I guess her whole unit would have to be there then. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 2-3 March 2004", 4 Mar 2004 - Q: Castle of the Wasp: Once per battle, you may target the current Province with a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards to lower its Strength by the Attack\222s
If I have an attacking army at Province A and an attacking army at Province B and I am resolving Province A. Can I have an attacking card, like Moshi Amika at Province B, Province a Ranged Attack and target the Province A to lower its Strength by the Attack\222s?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: This was answared before but some advervasaries made me think otherwise. Can Castle of the Wasp and No hidding place use Tsuruchi technique???
To do the ranged not to just raise?
A: "Once per battle, you may target the current Province with a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards to lower its Strength by the Attack¹s strength."
To use this effect, you have to be the Attacker or an attacking ally, and the ranged attack must be an uncombined ranged attack coming from one of your cards in the attacking army. Tsuruchi Technique is not in your attacking army -- it is a card played from your hand. It doesn't combo with the City. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 20 Feb. 2004", 21 Feb 2004 - Q: Flee the Darkness Kiho Reaction: When another player targets one of your Personalities with a Battle action or with an Open action during a battle, bow one of your Shugenja or Monks to cancel that action.
Castle of the Wasp Once per battle, you may target the current Province with a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards to lower its Strength by the Attack 's strength. Once per turn, one of your Mantis Clan Personalities need not bow to produce a single or combined Ranged Attack that targets opposing cards.
Canceling question also. If someone uses the not to bow trait from CotW, and the ranged attack gets cancelled (ie, flee) can they later use that trait again?
A: Yes. They haven't made a ranged attack without bowing yet. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 16 Feb. 204", 18 Feb 2004 - Q: The Castle of the Wasp player naval invades and shoots a ranged attack at an opposing personality with Yoritomo Rui, and elects to use the Castle of the Wasp ability[...]
A: Trait. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 December 2003, Part 3", 9 Dec 2003 - Q: to not bow her. The Kyuden Ikoma player then cancels the action with the stronghold. Can the Castle of the Wasp player choose to do a ranged attack with Yoritomo Rui again and choose not to bow her, or must she now bow?
A: Canceled means "never attempted" (Diamond rules, pg 72). Treat it as if Rui was taking the action for the first time. No bowing necessary. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 December 2003, Part 3", 9 Dec 2003 - Q: So if I use Castle of the Wasp with Nobomoto's Ranged Attack, it doesn't happen?
A: Sure it does; it's specifically written to waive costs. Also, remember that "sent home bowed" is normally *one* effect (Rules Archive, General Rules, Battle), so House of the First Stone keys to that joint effect only, not to any action where both bowing and going home occur in some way. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 4 October 2003", 4 Oct 2003 - Q: How does the new Mukami interact with the Castle of the Wasp? If you choose not to bow him, does he still go home?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30 September 2003, Part 2", 1 Oct 2003 - Q: The abilities on the Castle of the Wasp are not reactions, correct?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30 September 2003, Part 2", 1 Oct 2003 - Q: Since you can make a ranged attack without bowing with the Castle of the Wasp, does that mean that like Satsu doing Kihos while bowed, any of the archers that require bowing for their ranged attacks can do so while bowed if they use the Castle's ability to make a ranged attack without bowing?
A: Oh, that's a Diamond thing. Left for Jeff Alexander. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30 September 2003, Part 2", 1 Oct 2003 - Q: I was then assuming Castle of the Wasp lets me target a province with a range attack, combined or not, from my attacking unit, then I got to the words "exactly ONE of your attacking cards" which made me think I was wrong. Then, after reading one of the posts at the Kobune Port where they discussed that the Tsuruchi followers are a threat to provinces, it made me think that perhaps I was initially correct. So what really does Castle of the Wasp do?
A: Just what it says, of course! ;)
Copying Jeff's answer for the record: "Once per battle, when you make an uncombined ranged attack from one card in your attacking army, you may target it at the defending Province to reduce its strength by the ranged attack's strength. (You MAY modify the strength of this attack with Reactions -- this does not cause the attack to come from more than one card.)
"Once per turn, when one of your Mantis Clan Personalities in your army makes an uncombined ranged attack or adds to a combined ranged attack, and that attack targets a card in the opposing army, your Personality doesn't need to bow. (This may not combine with the first benefit because Provinces are not in the opposing army.)" Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 September 2003, Part 2", 23 Sep 2003 - Q: Assuming I'm attacking, can I use "No Hiding Place" with a Ranged Attack from one of my attacking personalities, and keep him/her from bowing using the stronghold's trait?
A: No. A card at home is not opposing (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 74). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 September 2003, Part 2", 23 Sep 2003 - Q: If I use a Shugenja to cast a spell that creates a ranged attack, can I use the ability of the stronghold?
A: Yes, if it doesn't create consecutive ranged attacks. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 September 2003, Part 2", 23 Sep 2003 - Q: If I am using Castle of the Wasp or a personality who does not have to bow to use ranged attacks (Tsuruchi Sho), do I have to bow the personality to use The Arrow Knows the Way?
A: The Arrow Knows the Way can't be used at all, because the appropriate trigger (bowing) doesn't occur, and you can't bow a card for no reason. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 September 2003, Part 2", 19 Sep 2003 - Q: I'm sure that this has already been addressed so I appologize if this question is redundant.
A: All questions answered, no questions asked! Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 September 2003, Part 2", 17 Sep 2003 - Q: Can I use Tsuruchi tech with Castle of the Wasp on a province as a battle action of range 3 and not as a reaction to a range from any card of my unit?
A: No (stronghold text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 August 2003", 22 Aug 2003 - Q: If I use cascading fire on a shugenja for 2 range 3 attacks, am I able to use the [Castle] of the Wasp [trait] on the first of the consecutive attacks to prevent her bowing.
A: See previous question. No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 17 August 2003", 17 Aug 2003 - Q: For the purposes of Castle of the Wasp, what constitutes "exactly one" card?
A: Not combined. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 15 August 2003", 16 Aug 2003 - Q: Basically question is this. If I have a personality, say Tsuruchi Hiro who is bowed, and I have not used the second trait on Castle of the Wasp, can I unbow him with Inner Fire and have him shoot using that trait?
A: Sure. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 8th, 2003", 8 Aug 2003 - Q: Then the real meat of the question is, since he cannot be targeted by actions, is use of this trait from Castle of the Wasp considered to be an action and therefore cannot target him?
A: No. His own action is not considered to be targeting him (it's self-referential), and the trait of Castle of the Wasp is not an action. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 8th, 2003", 8 Aug 2003 - Q: viewtopic.php?t=57964
Attempting to be more clear and specific.
Can a player using Castle of the Wasp combine a ranged attack from I Know That Trick with a ranged attack printed on another personality? With another I Know That Trick performed by another personality? Does the fact that the personalities are producing the ranged attack rather than the player (such as with Tsuruchi Techniqu) matter here?
A player using Castle of the Wasp has three copies of Moshi Amika out; A, B and C (A has some force boosting item, rendering her at 3 force). A performs the first battle action on I Know That Trick. May one of the resulting ranged attacks be combined with B, and one with C? (For an end result of simultaneous Ranged 5, Ranged 5, Ranged 1)
Same situation as abover, but with Moshi Amika and Moshi Amika xp. May one of the IKTT ranged attacks be combined with Moshi Amika xp's first battle action, and one with Moshi Amika xp's second battle action? (For an end result of simultaneous Ranged 7, Ranged 7, Ranged 1)
Thanks!
A: It's basically word for word the same question as previously posted (and answered!) in http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48829&highlight=trick+combine.
(Search terms "trick combine", all terms, L5R CCG Rules board only, post titled "I Know That Trick + Moshi AMika xp pt. II") Chris Fuchs, "Combining Ranged Attacks (3)", 8 Jun 2007 - Q: If Guerilla Tactics is used on the defence can the personallity not bow?
A: No, the Personality must bow. The bowing is an effect, and the stronghold waives costs. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Castle of the Wasp + Bowing", 1 Feb 2006 - Q: Question was :
Some time ago there I was asking whether I can use Rain of Death ability (two ranged attacks) with tactician from outside a battle. Answer was "yes".
There are following questions :
I played Rain of Death in battlefield A. Can I use tacticians in battlefield A ro 'rain a death' on units in battle B ? If no - why 'other-battle' tatician is allowed to RoD unit in current battle ?
As above, but i try to RoD units in battlefield B with tacticians in home / battlefield B / other. subquestion - as above.
Note that RoD says nothing about opposing or 'this battle', and as a formation it cannot oppose anything neither... Thus it's RA are rather strange.
Rain of Death
Tactical Battle: Produce two consecutive Ranged 3 Attacks.

Yes.

You can perform the Tactical Action with a Tactician at any location.
You must, however, still target the Ranged Attack from the Formation against cards in the Current Battle, opposing cards you control.
Oh, and Tsuruchi Technique fails the Rule of Relevance if it targets anything outside of the Current Battle.

Which answer is cosidered final ? Marty was last.
Additionaly, Marty said :
Quote:
You must, however, still target the Ranged Attack from the Formation against cards in the Current Battle, opposing cards you control.
WHY my ranged attack should be targeting a card opposing to a card I control but different that source of attack at battle ? Here are some rules :
Making Ranged Attacks (DE Rulebook, p. 90, no erratas on Rulesheets, no rulings relevant in Archieve)
Some cards have ability to make range attacks. A ranged attack must target a single card opposing the card or cards making the ranged attack: either a Follower or a Personality with no Followers.
Glossary : opposing (DE Rulebook, p. 102, no erratas on Rulesheets, no rulings relevant in Archieve)
For a card or unit: In the opposite army from the card or unit.
There are no sentence 'when you are making ranged attack, it should be tageted at a card opposing your cards". the only thing that should be opposed to a target is the card that MAKE a ranged attack.
"Hey, but your Tactician is performing this action" - yes, he is performing action. But from th beginning of Diamond edition Jeff said one, two, LOTS of times that performing and making an action is not the same. Check for Castle of the Wasp rulings, for example.
Then we are back at beginning - card that MAKES this attack is a formation. Only card that has be opposed by targets is card that MAKES attack. Then formation HAS to target opposing card(s). Then :
- this formation is a dude and cannot shoot at all - because formation cannot be opposed and as such cannot find any opposing cards;
- or this formation IS opposed, and this means that all actions targeting opposing cards can target a formation;
- or there is third way, which allows formation to shoot while unable to target opposed cards.
In second case Marty is right, but provides wrong backup for his words. Not to mean how nice the setting will be when formations (and battle terrains, why not) should be considered to be opposable.
In third case there is no force than a separate ruling 'out of air' that can explain why RoD can not shoot to different battles.
Please let me know where I am wrong. Thank you in advance for answer.
A: You know, I just discovered that my Web-based email account actually has search functionality? Booyah.
Anyway, here is what Jeff (the Lead Designer) said about the card and how to play it back in November. Some of that may need to go in the Accumulated Rulings. Martin Lund, "Rain(s) of Death - after riposte", 12 Mar 2005 - Q: heya all,
I've had some confusion in my deluted little brain about how Purge the Weak works.
"Maho reaction: Once per turn, after one of your Limited, Open, or Battle actions resolves, reduce this shugenja's Chi by 1 to take another action of the same type."
First, is the 1 chi loss permanent?
Second, What does the same Type mean? Does type mean, another battle, limited or open action, or is it more concise than that, and if I were to say, Do a range attack, would it have to be another range attack. Does this care about specialty things, like doing a raid action. If I did a raid battle action, would I be able to do a normal battle action?
quietcorn wrote:
First, is the 1 chi loss permanent?
Diamond rules, pg. 70: No.
quietcorn wrote:
What does the same Type mean?
If you take Battle action, you can only take another Battle action. Limited lets you do another Limited. Open lets you do another Open.

Ummmm... Zen where is this coming from?
Does this mean that anyone producing a range attack can shoot anyone, anywhere, anytime? Cause it has NEVER been that way. You need a specific card effect, No Hiding Place for example, to do crazy things like that. Range Attacks target cards opposing the card producing the range attack. Simple as that.
If your going on the entire idea that, RoD doesn't "oppose" anyone, your being uber liberal with the rules, and creating a bad precedent. Though this would then apply to Tsuruchi Tech, as it does not "oppose" another card and it produces a range attack.
I honestly think your wrong in this.
Though I am sure every person playing Castle of the Wasp just wet their pants...
