Rules Q&A
- Q: Wouldn't the bowing of the Chagatai's Armor happen first? No. The Reaction is "Before the resolution of another player's action", which is before any effects of Only Actions Speak (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... resolution).
(W)ith The Trap is Sprung, wouldn't it check if you have reconned so that it would bow the Chagatai's Armor first. Then check if you are a Crane Clan Player to see if the rest of the unit bows?
A: No, for same reason as above. Zen Faulkes, "Only Actions Speak vs. Chagatai's Armor", 2 May 2011 - Q: Superior Opponent Fear • Iaijutsu Focus Effect: You may destroy an attachment at the current battlefield if your Personality in this duel is there. Battle: Target your unbowed Duelist: Target an enemy unit. Bow each Follower and Personality in it with equal or lower Force than your Duelist's Chi.
Chagatai's Armor Armor • Unique Reaction: Before the resolution of another player's action: Negate either the bowing, destruction, or movement of this Personality from the action's effects. Battle: Bow this card: Straighten this unit or move it to the current battlefield.
Steel on Steel Iaijutsu Battle: Target your unbowed Personality: He challenges a target enemy Personality. Destroy the duel's loser.
If challanged with Steel on Steel, when can chagatai's reaction be taken? Would a focused Superior Oppnenet destroy the armor before it's reaction could be triggered? At what point is resolution of the action? Before or after the process of the duel?
A: Chagatai's Armor can only be played right after costs are paid for the action it is responding to. See the sequence at http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_actions.
You can't wait to see how the duel turns out and then decide to use Chagatai's Armor. Zen Faulkes, "Superior Opponent vs Chagatai's Armor", 23 Mar 2011 - Q: Alright me and a friend were playing a game where a unit with Chagatai's Armor got hit with a unit destruction, the previous way we played this situation was Chagatai's Armor reacts saves the personality however the other cards in the unit, including Chagatai's hits the trash bin. However earlier today my friend referenced these rulings about this situation that seem to be in contradiction about what happens.

Could someone please explain what happens to the unit when a unit with Chagatai's is hit with a unit destruction effect. I am pretty sure we have been playing it right, but these rulings are causing an argument in our playgroup about it.
Thanks in advance
A: Please note than Zen's original recent ruling on The Last One was wrong but has since been corrected.
In brief, Chagatai's Armor negates the Personality's destruction, but is itself destroyed.
In detail:
1,000 Cuts Technique (for example): Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Kensai and bow two of his Weapons: Destroy a target enemy unit.
Chagatai's Armor: Reaction: Before the resolution of another player's action: Negate either the bowing, destruction, or movement of this Personality from the action's effects.
See Abilities and actions, Using abilities.
Player A puts 1,000 Cuts Technique on the table. Step A (Announcement): Player A announces that he will use the Battle ability on 1,000 Cuts Technique. Step B (Performing & targeting): Player A declares which of his Kensai will perform the action and declares Player B's unit containing Matsu Kenji, Chagatai's Armor and an Imperial Elite Guard as the target. Step C (Costs): Player A bows the Kensai's two weapons to pay the cost. Before step D, Player B announces and resolves the Reaction on Chagatai's Armor, creating an ongoing effect that negates Matsu Kenji's destruction from 1,000 Cuts Technique. Step D (Resolution): Player A resolves the effects of 1,000 Cuts Technique: Matsu Kenji's unit is destroyed. Nothing negates or otherwise prevents the destruction of Chagatai's Armor and the Imperial Elite Guard; however Matsu Kenji's destruction is negated. Step E (End): The action ends. Player A puts 1,000 Cuts Technique in the discard pile. Alex Jones, "Chagatai's Armor Vs Unit Destruction", 22 Mar 2011 - Q: I didn't see anything about this on the forums.
Can Rising Sun Blade destroy a Weapon, Armor, or Item provided that the Attachment in question has less than 5 Force? In simple terms, can RSB be used to destroy Chagatai's Armor?
Thank you for your time.
A: That's pretty much what a "card without attachments and with 5 or lower Force" means. Alex Jones, "Rising Sun Blade vs Other Weapons and Attachments", 9 Feb 2011 - Q: For example, would the controller of the person with chagatai's armor on him have to react before he gets to see whether I win the duel or not?
A: The timing of the Reaction is before the action's resolution; that is, before any of its effects resolve, which include even issuing the challenge and starting the duel. So, yes, he would have to react before knowing if he'd won or lost, but if he does, it would negate the bowing. Brook Cunningham, "Chagatai's Armor/Muscle & Steel vs Overwhelming/Rout/etc", 6 Feb 2011 - Q: Similar scenario but involving overwhelming pressure. Let's say I target Chagatai's Armor with Overwhelming Pressure and then target the person that has the armor attached to him with the other part of overwhelming effect. Since the armor would be destroyed before the bowing of the person it is attached to, could the armor's reaction still be taken to prevent the person's bowing?
A: Yes, as above, the armor's reaction could be taken before any of the effects of the action resolve; that is, before it is destroyed. Brook Cunningham, "Chagatai's Armor/Muscle & Steel vs Overwhelming/Rout/etc", 6 Feb 2011 - Q: Consumed by five fires kills a unit with Chag's armor follower and Personality. Does the Personality survive or the attachments are being consumed before they react?
A: The Reaction occurs, "Before the resolution of another player's action," which means it always comes before any effects happen (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... resolution). Zen Faulkes, "Chagatai's Armor Vs Consumed by five fires", 8 Dec 2010
